Recently put together a Z390 FTW with a 9900k and some gskill 16gig 4133 memory which I found on the QVL, F4-4133C19D-16GTZA.

I've never overclocked before so I tried to find settings that would be safe and stable. I was able to manually set the 9900k to 4.9, and I got it to boot past BIOS with 3900mhz and 1.30v on the memory. I was not able to boot with the XMP profile which attempts to run the advertised speeds of 4133, 19-21-21-41.

*edit* ( I just turned the voltage up to 1.35v on the memory to see if this helps...it's hard for me to tell if it's "more stable" since I've only gotten two BSODs in a month and a half)

Since November I've only had 2 BSOD's both of which were caused by "ntoskrnl.exe" failure according to my minidump files. Did a little reading and found this can be cause by memory issues/overclocking. Being totally new to this I'm not sure what I should look at/focus on to try and get things more stable. I know it's been roughly 2 months and I've only had 2 BSODS but I'd rather have zero BSODs lol.

Please let me know what information you guys need to give you a better picture of my configuration. I have hwmonitor, cpuid, and evgaeleet tuning installed so just let me know what to screenshot.

XMP can be unstable - I always set the RAM to Mfg specs Manually

Does XMP "Work" when you remove the OC on the CPU ?

I think I tried the XMP first without the CPU overclock and it didn't work, I could try it again though.

Setting it manually is a thought too, I haven't tried that yet.

Since my original post I had a crash today with the 3900mhz and the 1.35v. I turned it down to 3800mhz and left it at 1.35v. No BSOD or minidump just hard crash and then booted back up no problem.

Setting your vccio & vsa voltages to 1.35v should help.

I've never had a mobo that supported evga e-leet before, can I just set those voltage through there? Or should I go into BIOS and set it there?

You're not the only one to have a problem with this kit, it's on the EVGA QVL but not on the G.Skill QVL.

Yeah that's what I was wondering if anyone else had the same setup and had luck running at either the advertised speeds of 4133mhz or if they found a nice stable speed that worked for them with the same specs.

Ok I've got the CPU still at 4.9, I changed vcio and vsa to 1.35v and I have the memory at 3800mhz with 1.35v as well. Going to run this for a while see how things go.

Prior to making these change I was experiencing random crashes in Tarkov and those BSODs I mentioned. If those go away then I would assume these new settings are better. If things stay quiet I might bump it back up to 3900mhz and see how that performs.

Until then if anyone else has the same hardware specs as me I'm curious to hear what you are running your CPU/memory at.

This was the thread:

https://forums.evga.com/Trouble-with-Memory-Configuration-m3019415.aspx

The G.Skill QVL goes up to 3600CL16 so I'd say to try that with their timings with your voltages of choice.  Run some benches, it may be faster in apps than the 3800CL19.

3466CL14 or 3600CL14 can be really quick, they might possibly be able to be tuned to be stable, faster in many cases than 4000CL19.

I'm sure 4000CL19 can be made stable with the right tuning but have no idea how to do it, LOL.

I'll read through the post you mentioned, thank you.

Also played Tarkov all evening had no crashes, no BSOD since setting things to 3800mhz, with 1.35v on memory, vccio, and vsa. I didn't tweak the timings at all on the memory just left it on whatever the mobo defaulted it too.

stable at 3800 is good

Tech support at G.Skill is also good - send them an email, ask if they have any recommendations

It's a shame to buy something which doesn't work at what it is meant to be... Do you eventually know what are the chips used on your memory kit ? Hynix, Samsung, Micron ?
Otherwise the better thing to do is to send back this kit to buy another one from another vendor if your time limit isn't out...

Wrong. A cpu imc can vary from chip to chip. Not all imc's will be able to push 4133MHz+ without adjusting vsa & vccio voltages, and some won't even be able to get there with adding additional voltage as they are rated at 2666MHz from Intel. Anything past 2666MHz is overclocking and isn't guaranteed.

Still on 3800mhz and no crashes since my last post.

The timings are still on default. Would you guys recommend I try to set them to 19-21-21-41 which is what the 4133 xmp profile uses? Is it possible to do that when running at a lower mhz?

What were the timings that the MB selected that you've been running on?

3800Mhz is quite good... owning the same mobo as you, i've overclocked my Ballistix from 3200 CL16-18-18-36 to 3733 CL17-20-20-40 1.35v, i've used Taiphoon burner software which indicated me that my four sticks are running Samsung SEC K4 E-die chips which support quite well overclocking so i wanted to try... you could eventually check your Gskill ram with this software to know what chips are on your memory but in any case memory controllers of 9900k are well known to support high ram frequencies so it might be yours the limiting factor
