My Z20 started randomly disconnecting a few days ago and I have to unplug and plug it back in to get it to work again. It was working fine and then this just started happening. I’m not having any problems with any other usb device.

If you're on an AMD x570 mb try plugging the kb into USB 3.0 ports. There are known issues with their USB 2.0 ports. Also avoid any external USB hubs. You can also try a factory reset by clicking on the gear icon in Unleash RGB.

I am using an X570 board, so I’ll make sure it’s plugged into a usb 3.0 port. I’m not using the RGB software.

Can confirm that this happened to me when I accidentally plugged my Z20 into a USB 2.0 port a while back. I have an MSI X570 Unify motherboard...

Make sure to download the most up to date bios for your board.  Agesa 1.2.0.3b should fix all USB woes...

Have had this keyboard for 3 days plugged into an Asus TUF X570 with a 3800x.  All of my back panel USB slots are rated as 3.2 gen USB.

I'm getting disconnects after about an hour of use and only a reboot will bring it back.  If keyboard is allowed to go to sleep, it then requires a hard reboot.  When I first plugged it in, it did a firmware update (2 days ago).

EVGA software has been Updated though it seems incapable of holding my Panel color settings under Custom setup, as it appears to be resetting to default.  I'm wondering if the TOF sensor has something to do with this.

I've am now plugging into my Gen 3.2 ports rated at 10 gbs (the others are Gen 3.1 rated 5 gbs) and am going to see if that has any effect.

Unleash needs to be running in the background for any custom lighting to stay on. If you close Unleash then it will go to the default lighting preset.
I would strongly recommend testing the keyboard on a non-AMD system since there are well documented USB issues.

I'm aware of that, but the issue is the preset that I set my colors to is erased and needs to be completely input into Unleash again when the software comes back up.
The disconnect issue is more concerning since I'm totally invested in AMD product.  I can borrow an intel laptop and use it to see if the issue persists.

FWIW, I have a Z20 Linear on an MSI X570 Unify board, and a Z20 Clicky on an MSI B450M Mortar Max. The X570 board is the only one I've run into issues with, and that was only when I either 1) plugged it into a USB 2.0 port  and 2) when I plugged it into a USB 3.0 port other than the original port the keyboard was plugged into when I first programmed the custom lighting.

I know a sample size of one isn't much to go on, but it almost sounds like you have a USB problem on the motherboard. Possibly with the Agesa version, as Bobmitch said, above.

Maybe update the BIOS? Or experiment with plugging the keyboard into different ports, unplug other USB devices from the others if possible, etc? And if you can, see if there are parameters in the BIOS that can affect specific USB ports? Apologies for my dart-throwing at the problem...

This morning I figured out a way to somewhat easily back up and even transfer the stored custom color profiles, so I'll try to post that in this forum in the next day or two.

I didn’t change anything and the behavior seems to have corrected itself.

Well to follow up, after switching ports yesterday to the higher speed 3.2 ports, the disconnects and weird actions associated to it have stopped.  It is quite possible that my mobo manual has been replaced online with the new ASUS TUF mobo manual and that the ports I was originally plugged into were actually 2.0.

After some further tweaking in the software I've also eliminated the disappearing profile problem and finally figured out how to get the keyboard to go black when the computer sleeps.

So the only minor gripe I have left is the 2 second delay on the E keys even with simple combined keystrokes assigned.  That I can live with since I can use my old commands quickly with one hand, will probably just assign Web link command to them instead.

With everything ironed out I am quite happy with this keyboard now, but I liked the general feel of it from the get go.

Further Questions - what exactly does the Game mode "E" switch do?  Currently running with it off, and what is 6 / N function in relations to gaming use?

Game mode allows you to disable the Win key or other combinations when gaming. 6/N function is 6 or N key rollover. That should for the most part always set to N key rollover.

Having the same issues except I'm using an asus z490g intel board.
When it shuts down, I replug the USB and it works for some time and then completely turns itself off again.
This issue is new after about 9 months of having this keyboard.

Same issue with a 12th generation i9 Intel.  Seems to happen more when I type fast -- although maybe it's unrelated.  I've RMA'd this keyboard 2 or 3 times now...

Every other keyboard I have works on this computer with no issues.  This Z20 series seems to have something wrong with it.  Help?

Has anyone verified their power plan settings regarding their USB ports?

I've got my USB Settings/USB Selective suspend setting set to Disabled.

You can find the setting under Power Options / Advanced Settings after selecting to change the plan settings.

Mine does the same thing and here is a USB log of it from today. This is my second keyboard and it has been crickets from EVGA on this massive issue with their product. If you google this issue you find it is entirely too common.  At this point they should issue a recall and full refunds to cut their losses. I also have selective suspend disabled in advances power setting and have turned off all power saving features in the mobo bios.

Here is a follow up observation. My keyboard to date has never turned itself off while gaming. It seems rock solid while gaming. My issue with the disconnects and random turning off has always been while typing. Also the issue seems to occur more frequently the faster I type. Seems like a very odd issue considering I play a lot of shooter twitch reflex games with WASD and skills on the keyboard keys and use the mouse primarily to aim and shoot. So hopefully someone at EVGA is monitoring the their forums and will report this to the QA, dev team or whoever is in charge of rolling out fixes at EVGA.

    Hello all,

I find it quite concerning and really not ''Customer-Friendly'' to ask your consumer to pay for shipping and replace a Z20 keyboard with another Z20 keyboard that will simply bring the same issue with time... I mean it already cost me more than $100 bucks in the first place for this keyboard, now I have to pay $25 shipping fees to replace it with the same broken keyboard ? So when this one fails, again pay $25 shipping to get it replaced and... the circle of life goes on and on... in the end I should have bought another brand and pay a little bit more to have peace of mind ?

I asked customer support about this situation and that it was a known fact for this particular keyboard (lots of it here and reddit...) and did not want to pay to send it back and on and on like this and they simply replied : We opened the RMA option for you.... ain't that a bit non-professionnal ?

Your KB failed?  Now your asking what if the replacement (RMA) KB fails ?

    Thanks for the reply,

I'm not actually asking ''What if'' but more ''When'' cause we all know it will happen.

I already had to RMA a 3080TI the past month and it cost me $50 shipping because of a faulty fan header... already this is kind off stupid since the prices of those products are out of this world and you would think that customer paying this price deserve a non-faulty product... Company should be responsible for those fees IMO.

So it brings back to my KB (Funny but not so funny that I had to unplug and plug in again my KB as I'm typing this) where I'll have to pay again fees to send it back... then in one year when it fails again, other fees... and so on...

If the issues described in a support ticket warrants a RMA process then we would issue the RMA and not make our customers go through hoops of unnecessary trouble shooting. Those that have issues that have either posted here on the forums or other online platforms are generally not indicitive of a fault with out many units that have that are out in the wild. If you've had the keyboard for almost a year or more and disconnect issue just started presenting itself then it is more likely a sign of a failure on the USB controller.

Since my board is newer than my keyboard and nothing else connected to the usb ports is disconnecting I would say the issue points the keyboard not the controller. The keyboard is over 12 months old btw but ill be throwing it in the bin and buying a keyboard from a company that knows how to build them rather than blame someone the users other hardware. Sure there are plenty out there in the wild there are also plenty of users that will simply move on without complaining assuming their keyboard is broken.
Mine btw also has a issue with the tof sensor so much so I had to turn it off because it simply doesnt work I guess thats the usb controller issue too.
I find it frustrating that a company like EVGA would rather blame everyone else rather than accept that maybe their product is messed up. Oh it could be Asus motherboards so try and use something else..... I mean come on it could also be your keyboards so maybe we should all buy something else since your company refuses to admit it.

There is a USB controller on the the keyboard which can fail. Like we've said if you have an issue with the keyboard contact our support team so we can assist with a warranty replacement.

I've been having this issue with my board for a couple months now. Sometimes it will work fine for hours with no problems while gaming, other times it takes 20 minutes of unplugging and plugging back in to get it to actually connect, and yes like as mentioned above, it just disconnected in this sentence. also like mentioned above it will be fine for hours while gaming but as soon as I try to type something out it will disconnect. I'm actively looking for a replacement board that has the macro keys on the left side, since it doesn't seem that doing an RMA will actually fix anything.
I've also tried literally every USB port on my pc, I've now been reduced to having it plugged into the front IO because it happens so frequently and that's more convenient to unplug than the back. -.-

I have the same disconnecting problem, have to cold boot the PC to get it work, as I am afraid frequent plugging and unplugging the motherboard USB interface will be worn out. A few days back the keyboard "wants" to disconnect while typing, it suddenlty inserts some newlines, and just RGB light almost off, I strike hard on the keyboard with my hand, the RGB light flash and come back. Since than no disconnecting for a week.

Is known issue from EVGA Z20 keyboard I RMA one already and this one I have now is disconnecting too. I am not looking to RMA it since I giving up on having spend another 30 bucks for shipping get one eventually after 4 months start too. I have EVGA Z10 works fine but wanted the Z20 and mouse Z15 to match but guess I just settle Z10 for now eventually going try Razer keyboards and see how it goes. Bad thing about EVGA Z10 led is only red kills my color scheme I have going.

    Re: Z20 keeps disconnecting. 2023/04/30 16:11:25 (permalink)
    So fun story:

I've been dealing with this for way too long, nothing on reddit or the EVGA forums helped. Until one day, when it disconnected back to back about 5 times in a matter of 30 seconds after reconnecting, I decided to drop my keyboard about 2-3 inches out of frustration....and it turned on. This was a game changer, that means it HAS to be hardware related.

So I tore the whole keyboard apart, as far as I could, and then I had a thought. "That TOF sensor thingy, what does that even do?" I remember reading on one of these posts that someone fixed their KB by blowing all the dust out of the sensor, seemed like a longshot. I took it to the next level. I decided "I don't use this sensor for anything that I am aware of, it serves me no purpose....DISCONNECT". I pulled the ribbon cable out of the sensor, left it attached to the keyboard but disconnected and that's when the magic happened.

30+ days, not a single disconnect or hiccup since then. Have also perform multiple more light drops, SOLID, never disconnected.

I think the sensor is just fubar. Might not work for everyone but it saved me from buying a new keyboard.

hopefully this helps someone out. I can provide screenshots if necessary

Why not just disable the TOF sensor in the Unleash software?  Much easier solution.  That's what i did to resolve the same issue.

That does sound a lot more simple. Had anyone anywhere on any forum/thread mentioned that out loud, I would have done so.
