Greets

I am having considerable trouble getting thunderbolt AICs to work on this board. I have been in contact with evga support but they seem to know even less than I do which is not too helpful.

According to them the thunderbolt implementation on this board is Generation 2. I started off with a Gigabyte Gen 3 card which caused long beep errors upon POST and system hangs.....so I found a Gigabyte Gen 2 card and now it's simply not recognized no matter what I do.

If anyone can post their success stories with TB AICs and this board I'd be much appreciative. What brand card and what are your settings? Are there UEFI settings that appear for you or is it configured primarily in the OS? Is there a particular slot you use, and what do you do with CSM settinsg?

evga recommends the MSI brand card but they are completely off the market and I can't find one anywhere (can't really find any other brand Gen 2 cards any more).

Thank you

I have that MB, but have not used Thunderbolt

Other Forums members may have some advice to share - but they will all want to know details of your PC

WE know the MB, what BIOS are you on ?

    CPU ?

    OS ?

    PSU ?

Other devices that occupy other slots ?

    Hiya,

    I'm using bios v2.06. Here's my system:

    -Intel Xeon 1650 v3 @ 3.5Ghz
    -16GB Corsair DDR4-2666 (2x8GB)
    -eVGA 1060 SC 3GB
    -Samsung 970 EVO 250GB
    -LSI 9207 SaS 4i4e w/ 2x 2TB Hitachi SaS drives
-Gigabyte Falcon Ridge Dual Thunderbolt 2 AIC (Dual 20Gb/s Mini DP)
    -Corsair RM850x PSU

I have a QNAP Thunderbolt 2 NAS on its way to me - I currently do not have any thunderbolt devices here. This raises a question - do I need to have a thunderbolt device plugged for the card to become active and visible? I previously was using a Gigabyte x99 Gaming G1 WiFi and I could see the Gen3 Gigabyte card in the BIOS and in Windows no problem. On that build I ran my video as passthrough with no issue and was able to run a firmware update. It certainly seemed like it was primed and ready. Here it's not visible anywhere, even poring over Aida64. So I'm a bit iffy on whether any devices are going to suddenly spring it to life.

I went back and forth with evga support and they said that the only card they tested to work with this board was the MSI Gen2 card. I got a few different reps replying to my mails and one rep said a Gen3 card should work but they were unable to qualify that statement. They weren't able to provide any bios settings (or tell me if there is a UEFi implementation for thunderbolt settings) or anything else really. I think while they put a header on the board and did some minimal testing it is far from comprehensive and a bit experimental maybe?

    Thanks much!

I have Not tested this ---> sounds like you Need a driver

You can See the device Recognized in BIOS ?

    What about Device Manager ?

What about Windows Administrative Tools - Computer Management or Component Services ?

Absolutely nothing in device manager and I've pored over Aid64 Extreme and SiV and can't find a single mention of it anywhere. It's ghost.

I do have the Thunderbolt software that came with the card running - it's application v. 3.0.19.150. That's all Gigabyte provided. It's a tray app that I believe doesn't invoke until a device is plugged. The Thunderbolt service is running.

I'll take a look at the link and see if it changes anything...

Thanks, those links don't tell me a whole lot though because they're for Thunderbolt 3 and NUC products, not really what I'm using.

    Re: X99 FTW K and Thunderbolt 2019/03/10 15:03:35 (permalink)
While I'll wait until I have the Tbolt storage device to really see what happens, I am not used to putting peripheral cards in and not having them recognized or configurable whatsoever until a device is ready. I have firewire and USB cards and I certainly don't need to have something attached to have them appear in my device list, have drivers loaded and addressing reserved etc.

I really don't know how Intel or anyone else can expect any kind of widespread adoption when this is so poorly documented. It seems like generally getting it to work is a crapshoot and there are no well defined paths to getting it working. It seems that people are taking software and firmware from other products and stringing things together for updates, but it needs to be better than this. I mean we're on Gen3 already and supposedly the interface is supposed to max out at 100GB/s, so there is more in the pipeline. I think Gigabyte has the right idea, I've  had several boards in the 170 and x99 series that have pretty much just worked out of the box.

I suppose it doesn't much help either that eVGA put it on their boards but at least for the FTW K can't really even guide anyone on how to use it. Understandably the AIC card manufacturers should be responsible for the bulk of this but it doesn't work without an AIC header, so the board makers have some involvement in facilitating it's use. It'd be nice if someone there who is more in touch with how it was implemented could speak up and help.

It almost seems that MAC has the Handle on Thunderbolt ATM.
Most of what I have found for at lest the Desktop is support for Graphics.
Is your Device just not working?

Agree. Crap, I remember having thunderbolt docks and displays working just fine several years ago with MacBook Pros that I used for work.

We will need the Port to support this.

Looking now for a Motherboard Header connector for the back of the computer.

    https://thunderbolttechnology.net/consumer/ Some Good Info
    Look under CABLES & ADAPTERS
It looks like for TB3 we need a USB-C Port but not finding any the support the Motherboard Header.
The X99 FTW K MB has one on the back I/O Plate.

I wonder if the Thunderbolt Add-in Cards comes with this Cable>?

    Good to Know:
An easy thing to remember is that Thunderbolt 3 ports are technically backward-compatible with USB-C devices.
Thunderbolt 3, however, is not (necessarily) USB-C compatible.
While it's true that you can physically plug a Thunderbolt 3 device into a USB-C port, it isn't guaranteed to work

This Kit comes with the Cable. https://www.amazon.com/Asus-Expansion-Card-Motherboards-ThunderboltEX/dp/B01HDUVJ54

Yeah, my card came with the 5-pin header cable which I have plugged in, and the display port cables.

Also, Gen2 thunderbolt didn't use USB-C, it used mini display port. I have mini display port cables to get the job done.
