Intel is well on its way to making the innovation delivered with Thunderbolt 3 available to everyone. Today, Intel announced that it contributed the Intel Thunderbolt protocol specification to the USB Promoter Group, enabling other chip makers to build Thunderbolt compatible silicon, royalty-free. In addition, the USB Promoter Group announced the pending release of the USB4 specification, based on the Thunderbolt protocol.

Intel’s upcoming 10nm processor code-named “Ice Lake” will be the first to integrate Thunderbolt 3. Processor integration, combined with today’s announcement, is expected to drive large-scale, mainstream adoption of Thunderbolt. I think every company that has wanted Thunderbolt 3 but waited will now have incentives to incorporate it.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

And just in time to undercut the kickass that will be zen 2, how convenient eh?
Looks like Intel is feeliong the pressure but no doubt AMD will support this too soon

That's damn fine news. Not 24 hours ago I was ranting on this very forum about the seeming roadblocks to widespread TB adoption...

That's a bit alarmist. It would require physical access to a system, a special cable or peripheral, and fairly sophisticated knowledge to execute. I doubt most of use are in a position where a malicious person capable of this has physical access to our system or we are duped somehow into using a compromised cable or peripheral (and then following that someone would need remote access to our machine).

Thunderbolt certainly has its flaws (and security flaws) but I think it's very cool and promising and a step forward.

It won't really catch on though since the USB 4.0 standard will be here in the next year and a half. It should allow backwards support for Thunderbolt if they decide to use a chip that supports it but that is not required for the 4.0 standard which will probably quickly become the normal connection we use. The only thing that will be different is USB 4.0 will use the Type-C small connector and a lot of people still have devices that use the standard USB full sized connector and don't what to have to by a converter for all the devices they have.
