FYI

Not too many details , but some are reporting problems....

https://www.tomsguide.com/news/windows-10-update-causing-serious-problems-what-to-do-now

A recent Windows 10 update is breaking some PCs with installation failures, display problems and even unwanted system crashes on some machines.

Both the KB4579311 and KB4577671 updates are encountering error messages during installation for many users, with installation stalling out at 80 or 90 percent, or even at 100%, or getting stuck on the final restart to complete the update.

According to WindowsLatest, these installation hangups are often reported with one of the following error codes: 0x8007000d, ox800f0988, 0x800f0831, 0x80073701, 0x80070002, 0x800f081f.

Other problems being reported by users in Microsoft's support forums and Reddit include display monitor problems, blue or black screens, and even unwanted system crashes.

Users have reported unusually long download and install times, and failure to install the update. Even when the update installs properly, other reported issues include system crashes, and problems using File Explorer, printing and driver issues that impact speakers and Bluetooth audio
.

You need to do more research before doing Windows updates.
Different people have different experiences in doing computer upgrades, only by summarizing what others have experienced will they be closer to success.
https://www.winpwd.com/windows-10-update-problems.html
This tutorial is a very comprehensive summary of Windows Update.

Re: Windows Updates successes and/or problems thread 2020/11/05 09:35:46 (permalink)
I’ve had a few crashes that Have increased in frequency. It is either the W10, nvidia, driver, or PX1.

Today the crash was bad enough to have W10 go into its “Scanning and repairing drive (C)...” mode.

I’ve read where this can take several hours or more to complete yet I do not see the Drive access light flashing at all. Even then a repair is nothing more than isolating the bad sectors. This is a brand new 2TB Samsung SSD so I don’t want to cause any more problems if I can avoid doing so.

so my question is this. Should I let it continue to Scann/repair for however long it might be, or is a shut down and restart ok?

thanks

The only problem I had was with Apple iTunes.

iTunes would not load properly and I could only close iTunes using “end ask.” After about five of those, iTunes started working correctly.

Can't install 20H2. Fails with BSOD everytime. Stop Code: PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA

I've searched and there are a lot of reports of failures to install, but none of them for this reason. That stop code is too generic, and I have no idea what the problem could be. Any help would be appreciated.

Backup your data & do a clean install ... because once you can't load Windows .. there is no way to recover your files ... unless you made recovery disk ... or some sort of backup or image

My last Update in Win 10 broke the OS ... trying to load from 20H1 to 20H2 ..... had to do a clean install ... lucky for me it was a Folding Rig & no important information was lost

That PC had several Versions of Win 10 updates loaded on top of each other ... decided to do a Clean install of 20H2 ... Loaded with No issues

Not Sure if it was my --> third part security software or what .... It was Time for a clean install anyways

^ Speaking of, I've had no problems with the 20H2 update everything is meshing together quite well and so well so it was time to do a new Windows Backup and System Image but holy moly it took just over 39 hours to complete using a 4 TB Seagate Expansion STEB4000100. It makes me nervous when I have the system running that long without a shutdown I think next time I'm just going to do a System Image but then again I have uninstalled a lot of things to fit new stuff and moved a bit over to the 2nd drive so maybe that's why it took so long? Ye old spinners still going strong!

Edit: Changed the x to a t for fit. 😃

The color blue is thought to have a calming effect on people and it is widely reported that Microsoft purposely chose it for that reason, for BSOD in Windows.

Wonder what would happen if they changed it to whatever color is known to trigger people with poor impulse control. Probably generate a decent sideline in replacing smashed peripherals, lmao.

The only minor problem with 20H2, which was fixed, is that it switched my sound source from Creative to the Monitor. Had to switch it back. Funny how the Monitor doesn't even have speakers though.    :/

Those with issues it appears you need to do a reinstall.
As per the W10 choosing the monitor when speakers are not ON, that is done automatically. I thought i was going crazy but W10 choose my Samsung TV speakers as another source to hear last week. Interesting i might have to disable that feature.

  • Addresses an issue that prevents you from signing in on certain servers. This occurs when you enable a Group Policy that forces the start of a computer session to be interactive.
  • Addresses an issue that fails to set the desktop wallpaper as configured by a GPO when you specify the local background as a solid color.
  • Addresses an issue with the Microsoft Pinyin IME that unexpectedly dismisses the candidate pane when you type certain phrases.
  • Addresses an issue that fails to send the Shift keyup event to an application when you use the Japanese IME.
  • Addresses an issue that renders Kaomoji incorrectly on the emoji panel.
  • Addresses an issue that makes the touch keyboard unstable in the Mail app.

  • Addresses an issue that generates a 0x57 error when the wecutil ss /c: command is used to update an Event Forwarding subscription.
  • Addresses an issue that causes applications to fail when they call the LookupAccountSid() API. This occurs after migrating accounts to a new domain whose name is shorter than the name of the previous domain.
  • Addresses an issue in which loading a Code Integrity Policy causes PowerShell to leak a large amount of memory.
  • Addresses an issue that causes a system to stop working during startup. This occurs when the CrashOnAuditFail policy is set to 1 and command-line argument auditing is turned on.
  • Addresses an issue that causes the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Group Policy application to stop working when you are editing the Group Policy Security settings. The error message is, “MMC cannot initialize the snap-in.”

  • Improves the visual quality of Windows Mixed Reality headsets that run in lower resolution mode.
  • Extends Microsoft Defender for Endpoint support to new regions.
  • Enables a new Hardware-enforced Stack Protection feature called shadow stacks on supported hardware. This update allows applications to opt in to user-mode shadow stack protection, which helps harden backward-edge control-flow integrity and prevents return-oriented programming-based attacks.

This issue generates log events for DFS Replication (5014), RPC (1726), and no reconnection (5004) for a default timeout of 24 hours with no replication.

Just upgraded one of my last Win 7 Pro PCs ... X58 one of the best chipsets ever

So, Win10 Pro 20H2 installed .... can't add another user account where the option Should appear, I get a "grey box" with no inputs before the grey box closes

Have not found a solution in my web searches .... sigh

Just installed W10E LTSC 1809 32-bit on a HP DV9000 with a Core 2 Duo T5500, Geforce 7600 Go and 2.5GB ram.....updated it from Windows XP.  Needed to configure the USB stick iso and "new" 128GB Samsung 830 ssd to MBR, vs. the GPT a modern machine uses.  Still tweaking a few things, but seems to run fine and boot up with about 1GB or so memory used.  The machine is ancient and a bit bulky, but has a pretty nice screen and built in speakers, plus a DVD player, good as a media player.
