I saw AVATAR this weekend and this is now by far my favorite movie of all time. Did anyone else here like it? I really didnt think it was going to blow my mind like it did. When i was asked to go, I was like ..ehhhh. So, I did. I hope that everyone gets a chance to go watch it. In my eyes, no movies has been this big since star wars.

Saw it Friday in 3D.  I was stunned by the movie.  While the plot was not amazing (its an action movie, shouldn't expect it to be) it was more then good enough to support the world the visuals created and I thought it was highly engaging.  My whole theater was cheering and clapping at the end of the movie.

Planning on seeing it in IMAX 3D sometime this week if possible.

yeah, I'm plan on going a second time, taking my wife as an excuse to watch it again lol. What i liked was that you could not tell what was going to happen and it wasn't all fast action it was also slow action. Sometimes fast action has me up against my seat all stressed but this movie was kinda laid back action at times.

From having seen trailers only it reminds me a lot of The last Samurai, District 9 and maybe Lost Planet, lol.

It looks like the kind of movie that takes a bit from many movies and puts them together.

Avatar was easily the most visually stunning thing I've ever seen in a film, good acting, good storyline, it was just awesome. And Camel, I agree, Clash of the Titans looks awesome, my little sister wants me to take her to it when it comes out.

The story was pretty standard fair, most certainly. But... it was delivered pretty well, and I got the distinct feeling that the movie was more about the setting than the plot, which was more used as a vehicle to show off the setting.

And the setting was frickin' win. So, I was more than happy with it.

    I agree.

Mediocre story, but awesome direction of photography and music, and CGI.  The plot is the same old 'new guy who starts from a zero, and becomes a hero'.

I have to echo the sentiments here. Anyone who is familiar with american history with the western expansion era can basically take a test on what the story is going to be about and how it will end (with a certain assumed bias) and score nearly 100% easily enough. The elements that wouldn't be included are the science fiction aspects and overal spiritual outlook assumed from the indigenous population, which was interesting on its own. The CGI was done well, although i think they over did it on the making the natives look "human". Granted the overal structure and character design wasn't bad, but well, instead of "redskins" we have "blueskins" (please forgive the derogatory analogy).

How the movie was portrayed and the elements it captured was done well though. I was interested in the political whys of where they were more than the overarching backstory introducing the main character though. The 3 line explanation of "we want to make money from x resource" was a little overly brief in my opinion, but it does convey the point well enough.

My girlfriend geeked out over it though. She didn't want to see it at first, since it was sci-fi and she loves fantasy settings, but she really got into it. She went on and on about WoW afterwards and made several paritys in both visual effects and overal settings with character designs. I saw it in 3d as well. The actual 3d elements were rather minimal and somewhat underwhelming. What was done well with them, were the moving through crowd sequences, the holographic projections for computer screens and the floating fauna/seed sequences.

Overal it is worth watching and it doesn't get bogged down with too much plot to get those with shorter attention spans bored with the movie.

I actually appreciated that the 3D was subtle. It was every present, and it helped enhance things a bit, but without 'popping' into my face constantly. The 3D trailers I got were making me very unsure whether or not watching Avatar in 3D was a good plan (I hadn't watched a 3D movie before). Then the actual use of 3D in Avatar was pretty different, and I was happy for it.

Basically, I saw it more just enhancing visuals a bit, rather than being gimmicky.

Yes. I saw it in regular.. But after seeing how stunning it looked in just the regular.. Then remembering Transformers in IMAX compared to regular.. It should be absolutely amazing.
