Make sure you go early and get good seats for IMAX 3D.  It is a thrill ride the whole way and visually unlike any other movie.  The world looks so real and the cgi tech took hundreds of hours for just a few seconds of film.  Who cares about story and characters.  The movie is good, but the work they did on cgi is worth the money alone to watch in 3D.  GO SEE IT NOW!

Avatar has made $615,168,000 in 9 days. That is INSANE AMOUNT OF MONEY in such a small amount of time! Saw it in 3D, it makes you feel like your right there, very realistic. awesome movie, by far the best one I've seen in awhile.

If you say 'pls' or 'plz', because its shorter than 'please', I'll so 'No' because it's shorter than 'Yes'.

I saw it last night in IMAX 3D, visuals = 10+, sound = 10, story 7, It lacked suspense. Actually the story was good, but some of the overtones were to much IMO. The mining company and kooked out colonel that took orders from them left elements of disbelief and lacked depth to the story. I like action movies and could have tolerated the love story element, but the all knowing planet that saves them in the end part left this movie lacking what I would call great. The paraplegic marine and the dream like state of the avatar giving him a new body in an awesome world was a super cool.

Haven't seen it probably won't until its out on Bluray or DVD.  Last movie I saw in the theaters was "The Dark Knight"  Don't really go to the movies much.

I'll be waiting too, I use to love movies, but haven't been to a theater in 3 years, ( since my daughter was born ) will start going again, when she is ready to sit through a movie, or when I feel comfortable enough leaving her with a sitter, or once she is in school, perhaps they have early day showings. I enjoy Blue Ray on a 1080i 65 in,  but it's just not the same as the theater.

That's truly a shame. There are some movies you just have to watch in the cinemas. It's just not the same. One personal example for me was Cloverfield. I loved it on cinema, but on TV it blows.

Well at least he's being a responsible parent.  I agree though, you can't match the movie viewing experience of a nice theatre.  I remember seeing the Helms Deep assualt in LOTR: Two Towers for the first time at the theatre.  I was blown away.  I have a pretty nice home theatre setup at home but I can't recreate that same atmosphere.  I don't know, it's hard to explain.

Anyone that hasn't seen a 3D, or better yet IMAX 3D, movie recently  must spend the extra doe at least once... I dragged my cheap ass friend friend out to see Avatar. He usually watches $1 dvd's on his lil TV. It was great.... Like I said, the visuals are outstanding!

What I liked was that the 3d was very subtle, not in your face like many of these 3d movies.  It was there to help the environment, which was the real star of the movie, feel more real.

Yeah, i didn't even like the movie, but i'm still of the opinion that anyone who claims to enjoy science fiction even just a little bit, has no choice but to see this in a 3D cinema. Home cinema won't come even remotely close to the experience.

I won't be buying this on BD or DVD, but i would have gladly payed $50 for the cinema ticket. Majestic experience. Watch it at home and it'll be reduced to a mediocre sci-fi flick with a lacking script. It'll still be better than Waterworld, but what does that even say?

Agreed, I wasn't sure if if IMAX and regular 3D were any different, but I thought I might go to see it in regular 3D to compare. I think this new 3D format has finally arrived and will be the standard in the Theaters. I watch mostly everything on a 50" Pioneer plasma in Blu-ray which is pretty good, but I say that to emphasise how good the new 3D is. Even if you have a high end home theater it's worth checking out. I think it's a look into the near future of movie standards.

I saw it yesturday.

Honestly, I have no clue what all the hype is about.  It was your standard action movie with a love theme.  Nothing special.  The graphics were nice, but that is it.

When it comes to CGI movies with goofy hippy themes, I thought Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was much better.

I'm seriously starting to question your movie taste.  There are much better movies out there.  Movies with a gripping story line and have characters with such depth that the movie leaves you wanting to watch it again.

AVATAR?  I can't see myself watching it again.

Out of curiosity, how many who have posted before me are teenagers?

I mean, there is nothing WRONG with AVATAR, but it isn't the masterpiece I expected.  I only went because of this and similar threads on the subject.  If it had a better story line and better developed characters, I wouldn't be saying all of this.  But as it is, the only great thing about the movie was the special effects; everything else was just average or below average.  I could predict the outcome after only seeing 1/3 of the movie.  Standard, generic, however you want to describe it; that is what AVATAR is.

I agree completely although i think it was at least better than Spirits Within on several levels. However - we're in a clear minority on the internet, just check out IMDB. Yeah. I couldn't believe it either.

It's awesome because it was in 3d. Non 3d it's not really that big of a deal if you ask me. It's like a more adult version of Fern Gully lol, except that there's no Tim Curry. I was more interested in the technical aspects of the way the movie was made than the movie itself, but it's definitely a stunning sight to see with those 3d glasses on!

I agree the story was average or at least it could have been done better, but if you didn't see it in 3D you missed the best part. 3D or wait for DVD IMO

One of the WORST movies I have ever seen.  Horrible script, I mean horrible.   I only went for the special effects, but the dialog was so nauseating I could not enjoy the special effects.

LOL
There is always one.
Even with over 9000 reviews on netflix this move has 4.4 stars. Haters and wanna be critics love to spam crappy ratings over there so with a  4.4 star netflix rating it must be epic.

It's called having a different opinion. It's not about hating or wannabe critics. Not everyone likes the same thing. There are people who won't like it, and they are entitled to voice out their opinion just as you are.

It seems interesting that there is always someone who has to bash a movie/game/gpu etc. just because everyone else likes it, regardless of the fact that it may be very good/entertaining.  That has nothing to do with having an opinon, but everything to do with being a jerk.  Based on the way he phrased his dissent of the movie, the later would be more likely.  By the way, have you seen the movie?  If not, I fail to see what your multiple posts to this thread are meant to accomplish.

Indeed.

Oh, well please allow me to retort.

The basic story line of the movies goes like this.  An evil corporation abuses and manipulates scientist for its own gain.  Then destroys nature and a cultural icon for profit.  This becomes very clear in the first 10 mins. of the movie.  The rest of the script is just a plea to how awful and horrible free enterprise is, and how compassionate and loving the forest people and scientist are.  The whole concept was naive and insulting to the thinking person.

I felt like I was being programmed, like at one of the approved governmental programming facility's I attended as a child and young man.

That's why I could not enjoy the special effects.

You are over analyzing the enviromental aspect of the movie. The actual premis is derived more from a historical perspective. Look at the western expansion era of the US and compare it to the movie. Instead of native americans, you have the na 'vi. There are almost direct historical quotes used within the movie when the primary character is trying to tell the na 'vi of the impending threat to their people. The only real element missing from it would be the spread of disease and trading of alcohol. The enviromental "agenda" that you are alluding towards would take more of a side seat to this.

I think you are over reacting in general to only one aspect of the movie and losing focus of it as a whole. It is fine to be objective, as long as you aren't allowing your perception to be clouded preventing an objective outlook.

Actually, the movie might have been better if the story was closer to that premiss. OK, so lets go with it and say we did destroy our planet, left home, and got to this other planet with the natives in hope of a new found freedom. We have to pull over at that planet cuz our space ship runs out of gas. We try to make piece, but the natives have nothing to do with it, or some of them don't..whatever. We ask them if we can drill for oil to make gas and leave, but nothing doing. So, there is a big war and in the mean time one of our solders falls in love with a native (they could still do the whole avatar thing), but in the end we win. After all the old native leaders die off the young ones really like our technology, so we give them land and pay for their school and it's happy ever after cuz the natives teach us stuff like not destroying the planet or something like that. Yah, the ending is kinda sucky but we have to try and please everybody, but at least its happy.

I see, so the issue was more of who won for you then. Avatar attempted to blend a lot of different cultural based issues that are both historical and current. I don't think it suceeded in actually telling a full story about those aspects, while keeping the actual movie moving forward at a resonable pace.

Nothing is perfect, but this movie did a better job than a lot of the other movies that have come out recently. I would say it holds a similar parity to district 9. Although this won't be one of the best movies of all time regardless.

Nah, it wasn't about that to me. It just would have been closer to the historical premiss you referred to. The movie just lacked the gripping suspence of a great action/thriller flik to me... as far as the story goes, but I guess it wasn't supposed to be a action/thriller or something

I enjoyed it. Like everyone says the plot was predictable, but it was a fun movie to watch.

I can see an Avatar 2 coming out with the plot as follows.
Earthlings return en masse to Pandora to continue mining the unobtainium. This time they have learned from their previous mistakes and begin with extermination efforts to get rid of the pesky Na'vi. Once the natives are either eradicated or confined to reservations on the desert sections of the planet, we are able to strip mine the minerals we want to send back to earth. We then realize we can use this planet to manufacture on and pollute Pandora in order to save the polluted Earth. The Na'vi are then put into slavery to help mine the ores, and work the factories we have built.  End of story. I am looking forward to that sequel. SHould be good or a laugh or two and a big bag of popcorn.

Yah I was thinking something along those lines of a lot of pissed off War monger generals, and industrialized capitalist in free enterprise of the republican persuasion earthlings returning with big guns, but I'm not sure were on earth they would come from cuz Obama is changing that in the US.

I don't change my avatar. I got one avatar for when I'm online, one for offline.

I could see that, but i would have a hard time buying into it given the tech base available by humans and displayed advancements. I would just as equally expect to see some kind of low orbit or high altitude carpet style bombing or nuclear deployment and just wipe out everything that breathes, swims, or flies. I mean hell, the humans have to wear protective suits just to wander around outside anyhow, rad suits wouldn't be much different. It wouldn't be much of a movie in general though.

Saw it here in XD aka 3D w/ leather seats here.  Great movie.  Wasnt expecting much since movie's nowadays are either sequals or remakes.  Granted this is nothing original but none the less it was a great movie.

OK now I have seen it too! The Dialog could've been better indeed. The characters needed more depth as well. Other then that PURE epic and one of the greatest movies of our time.
