Re: We need to have a thread of what PSU people have and RTX 3080 or 3090 and is WORKING. 2020/11/21 11:32:53 (permalink)
I have AX1600i, z390 dark, 9900ks and 3090 strix (lm shunt modded and underwater with active backplate cooling with 2 ram blocks). I made a clean windows install just before I put in the new card. So only used pr for overclocking the 3090 without any gaming. My port royal scores are around 15500 with ambient cooling. +235 core or smilar curve around this pass pr benchmark. But anything over +900 mem crashes, display goes black and pc reboots (I thought normal this time). Then I said ok for the limits of my card and tried gaming. Detroit become human directly reboots pc in 5 secs to 1 minute, sometimes in menu reboots without any real gpu load. Witcher 3 also crashes but never reboots. Just crashes to desktop. So today I updated my mobo bios to 1.08, ddu and load latest drivers. And put cpu and memory to default. Gpu mem at 0, clocks at +200 looked stable in Witcher 3, but not DBH. DBH this time no reboots pc but crashes to desktop. +180 detroit become human looks not crashing. Without gpu overclock (less than +180 core) games looks full stable. Furmark, time spy extreme, pr all stable at +200 to +230, but games not very. So you people think my ax1600i (single/multi rail nothing changes) is not enough for the spikes at this much of a gpu overclock? and what psu I need to buy for a heavily overclocked 3090? Or maybe it' s the game drivers that makes the card pull unstable power and crash no matter how good your psu is. Maybe if your gpu and cooling is good enough and if you overclock the 3090 to the limits the psu will give up before the card everytime?

Hey friend I think the OP of this thread wants to keep it to what -is- working.  Might I suggest posting a new thread in the main 3080 forum? Tonnes of experts here will see it there much better too.

Of course, but I wrote here to show that ax1600i is not working very good under gaming load with overclocked 3090. And also everybody who is having crashes about 3080/3090 for sure is reading here.

I' ve checked all options. Looks like when everything at default (cpu, ram, vram) if you increase the gpu core enough, even ax1600i reboots the pc after a black screen, or crash to the desk top. At +210 my gpu runs 2220 mhz 1.1v, pass all stress tests but reboots in games.

Would a 1000W be enough for a 3090 on the XOC bios, paired with a 10900k?

Yes.

Thanks. Just seeing concerns/posts about shutdowns with 850W due to transient spikes.

That's more to do with the actual model of PSU than the wattage.

It could be a 1200W PSU and still shut down depending.

Look at the 1st post in the thread.

That's more to do with the actual model of PSU than the wattage.

It could be a 1200W PSU and still shut down depending.

Look at the 1st post in the thread.

HX and HXI 850W and Seasonic Prime Ultra Ti 750W.

Ah okay, I thought it was a wattage issue considering people were talking about upgrading their PSUs to a higher value.

There are those of us would have AXI 1600's and they are working fine....

I think your issues are something else.

That's NOT the PSU....

hope you are right, and hope it's not the gpu

You are using 3 separate PCIe cables right?

And either the cables that came with it or Corsair Kit?

Just checking.

Yes, already tried different outlets from the psu. Single/multi rail. Cpu/ram overclocked or not. Vram overclocked or not. nothing changes.

Same behavior (screen goes dark and reboots) happens in PR if memory is more than +950. But core overclocking in PR never gives this result. That just crashes.

In games opposite happens. Everything at stock, if the gpu core is more than +200, Detroit Become Human starting menu is just enough for rebooting pc. While at +200 everything looks stable in gpu tests. Time spy extreme pass with %98.5.

My ax1600i is 2 years old.

This all started after shunt modding and WB. I feel like if the card is pushed enough, even ax1600i becomes sensitive for 3090 power spikes. Maybe the game drivers are not as good optimised as bench marks or stress tests.

Is a software related problem possible to reboot the pc? It’ s like you suddenly press the restart button on the mobo.

Well, it's either that or the hard mods you made on the graphics card, I am thinking that what it really is.

Since the issues really started after you did that from what you said.

The power supply you have can handle anything you can throw at it really and a whole lot more.

You could push enough power through that graphics card to melt the PCB and blow everything on the card through those 3X 8 pin PCIe connections, and that's with Multi-Rail on and the PSU wouldn't even break a sweat.

40A per connection X 3 = 120A or 1440W.

The AXI 1600 will supply 1900W before it will shut down.

NOPE it's not sensitive to power spikes at all.

Your issues are software related.

Yes I was very confident about my psu before these started, but lots of people are reporting problems with 3080/3090 which subsides after swapping a more powerfull psu. This makes me thinking something wrong with my power delivery also. Before shunt and wb of course the power card pulling was limited. And maybe because of this I had no problems with my psu. Now vcore sits at 1.093-1.10 always. And gpuz showing 250-300 watts board power. Shunt mod looks working normal. Idk. Hope software related.

COOLERMASTER V1300W has been working fine for a few days, this thread is dumb and should be locked, just because 1 person can run there GPU on a PSU doesn't mater another can it all depends on there components and also the GPU its self each for there own!

Agreed, this is ridiculous. Its not the psu boys no matter how much you love evga. Im sorry to say but the fault is in the cards...lol

So far I have not found 1 person with the EVGA  Super Nova 850 G5, 80 Plus Gold 850W (Besides myself). I purchased one and ran into issues with my entire PC cutting off even during idle times, I sent in for replacement last week. Will update when I get the new one to see if I still run into issues. If I run into issues after receiving the replacement I will test with a confirmed working PSU to verify.
