It's cheaper to go buy a console now.   After a year, I finally got my email that the 3080 was back in stock.   By the time they added $35 extra for ground shipping (which is pretty lame), it was almost $900.  I am just so tired of this mess.    Please lower your prices.   I know it doesn't cost that much to manufacture these cards.

Ok, just grab a PS5 or XBOX?

You signed up for the card and the prices haven’t changed that much overall. It was ALWAYS cheaper to buy a console.

Why sign up for something that costs more than you are willing to pay? Saving your money is a good thing. You don’t need the video card.

I actually bought a Titan X card from a guy at work about 3 years ago for $450.   It's been holding up just fine.    I don't buy low end cards but I've never had to pay $900 for one either.

I was shocked when I set out to rebuild my PC. The 1080 GTX Strix I had was about $500 when I had bought it 3 or so years ago. And to add insult to injury, I think I had to go participate at the local Microcenter lottery about 15 times before I even got the chance to purchase a 3000 series card… The first time I was able to get in and was offered a 3090 for close to $2,200 after tax I simply walked away…Somehow eventually a $1400 3080Ti began to look like a steal…

Well I haven't used any of the latest consoles, but I'm going to guess they can't touch the performance you get from a PC with a 3080/3090. I love gaming in 4k at 80-120fps with my LG C1. Most games can run in that range with DLSS Quality. (ok not Cyberpunk) But Cyberpunk ran acceptably well on my 3090 when all the console people were crying about it. Some of that is lack of optimization, but the 3090 powered through it anyway.

what is stirring my pot is that the product life cycle cannot be an effective 3-6 months if they want $2k a pop.  for $2k, it needs to be minimum 12-18 months for a flagship card.  like others said, just forget it.

Graphics on the PC are always better with a high end card and my computer can do far more then a console. If I  bought a PS5 or Xbox Series X I would still have to buy a $500-600 computer for productivity so might as well put a 3070 in a PC and kill two birds with one stone. Only reason I justified a console was that I wanted a 4K blu-ray player and some games are exclusive to the console on the Sony side but that seems to be changing.

This is funny. One cannot help but consider a high-end GPU as an alternative asset class in the portfolio… YTD return on the 3090Ti is abysmal as well…

Given the little performance gain you’d get from a 3090 over a 3080 Ti, especially for gaming, you bet the 3080 Ti is a steal. Even though I bought three, I know the 3000 series cards are overpriced. It seems it started with the 2000 series, the major price increases per performance tier. The pandemic and crypto mining only made it worse thanks to scarcity. If prices don’t calm down once things normalize between supply & demand, I just may need to find a new hobby.

I am not sure why folks have shifted from the 3080 that the OP started off referencing, to randomly switching to the 3090 costs. Makes no sense to me.

The 3080 did start with an MSRP for the base line founders & “reference” PCB of $699 back in 2019, and has had a lifecycle of over 18 months, so I am not sure why short lifecycles have started encroaching on the conversation either. I am guessing it is a steering technique versus conversing with the actual topic?

Anyway, the 3080 for the FTW3 Ultra did start off with a lower MSRP, when the OP likely signed up, and then the MSRP went up over a year ago and hasn’t fully come back down. It went from ~$810 to ~$920 and currently has a $50 rebate bringing it back down to $870.

So, $60 difference from launch to now.

OP’s thread is about the cost of the card, which is nearly in line with what the card costed when it launched. After waiting so long, I can understand why someone would be frustrated, but since the price isn’t all that much different from launch, this would have been buyers remorse either way.

I wouldn't play games on a console if you gave me one for free.  These video cards are worth the price to me and I'm on the lower income scale.

I was thinking of one thing that was pointed out about consoles being "cheaper" one thing we saw this generation is console games start to show up at a price of $69.99 for new titles. So far only title to come out at that price on PC was Final Fantasy VII remake on the epic game store with other games being normally $59.99 new on PC. The other great thing about PC is I can go to Steam, Epic games store or a dozen other sources for games but with a console it's Microsoft or Sony or trying to find a physical copy. It's far more limiting to try to find a sale on a console game then it is on PC. One other thing is very few PC games I own have ever became unplayable because of updates. I can load up a 30 year old PC game and play it but with consoles if I wanted to do that they would want me to buy a new copy of the game that works on the current generation consoles.

Re: Video Cards Are So Overpriced... 2022/05/22 04:22:07 (permalink)
My first GPU was a 3dfx voodoo from Creative Labs, and this generation of cards was the first time I ever spent north of $900 at the bottom line for a video card. It was NOT worth it. FOMO is a real thing and I'm resentful that the market somehow made that price seem reasonable.

As far as I'm concerned, the only card that was actually worth the price was the 3060 Ti XC back when it was $410.

I can't disagree with the sentiment in this thread.  I remember buying my Strix 2080S a few years ago.  I looked at the 2080Ti and thought, "I'm never paying that much for a GPU".  So I bought the 2080S.  Fast forward to today, I now have two 30 series cards (3080ti FTW3 and Zotac 3090).  Silly money I spent on those.

The 2nd card purchase was more driven by the shortage than anything.  I had the Zotac 3090 that I snagged in Nov. 2020, but was concerned it would die (or worse yet partially die) and I'd never get Zotac to RMA it.  So when I got a notify for the 3080Ti, I grabbed it.
