Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070 PWM Operating Temperature Update 2016/11/24 01:45:00 (permalink)
Hi.
First off, I'm new to this whole situation, and this is my first post - so be gentle.

I have the 1080 '08G-P4-6284-KR' card with dual Bios. But I can't find out how I 'set the card to correct bios' before applying donloaded bios(es). I don't see any setting for this in the nVidia program, and (I've searched) no clear info on this in this forum either.

Yesterday I downloaded both versions, but when applied in noticed the latter 'speeding' through the process, which made me think it might have applied itself to the first bios also.

Any help is much appreciated.

if you look on the card itself, you'll see a tiny switch by the power connector - this toggles between primary/secondary bios. Flash the bios you currently have it on (left on the primary normally) then power down, flip the switch, reboot and flash the other one

Oh, thanks. But this worries me a bit then. As I've now obviously upgraded my first Bios with the version meant for the second one... Will I be able to patch it back? Won't trying to patch Bios one just throw an error since I'm already on the latest version (albeit for the wrong bios)?

Can we please talk here about this and calm down the situation with the free pads who really is an optional solution !

so hopefully you downloaded:

08G-P4-6284-KR - EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW DT ACX 3.0 - Primary BIOS (86.04.3b.00.74) | Secondary BIOS (86.04.3b.01.84)

use gpu-z - https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

to see what bios you have flashed at the moment, hopefully the 00.74 if you switch is still left in the primary position. I think (haven't done it) that you can reflash if you've put the wrong one on, but you should be ok, unless you flashed the primary, then the secondary without flipping the switch

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070 PWM Operating Temperature Update 2016/11/24 08:12:47 (permalink)
Well, starting to become worried about my situation. I have a GTX 1060 FTW+ (06G-P4-6368-KR) recently bought here in Brazil. in the first alert about the issue on the EVGA's page, this model was listed as affected by it. I've ordered the thermal pads, received a confirmation e-mail in Nov 14, saying that it will be shipped soon, and status in the thermalmod page was "Awaiting shipment".

In the meantime:
- No BIOS update was released for this model, albeit being the top of the line in the EVGA's 1060 lineup;
- The model was unlisted from the affected models, even having an ACX 3.0 cooler (and the informations on the page are VERY inconsistent - there is now a unlisted model (06G-P4-6163-KR) with an available BIOS update;
- The thermalmod page now says that I don't have an eligible model (what happened with my CONFIRMED thermalpad request?)

And my video card, even using stock configuration and with a Cougar 140mm and two 120mm fans at full speed blowing air over it, have a 70-74 degrees celsius when gaming (don't even dare to try to run Fumark). Setting the card's fans to 100% don't help too much, temperatures stays around 70C. And an RMA is the last option, since here in Brazil an RMA means 1-2 months until the new card arrives.

Would like an update about this situation. Each time that I look the thermalmod page, the infos are changed.

It seems that RMA is the only option here ;)

As Sargent Shultz use to day; "Veeeeeeeeeeeery interesting!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Background info:  I have an EVGA GTX 1070 FTW.

Since I have installed this VBIOS, for my particular model, two notes of interest...and all good! :)

First off, I was having issues with the infamous checkerboard full screen artifact, that caused W10P to blue screen, and then reboot your system.  I usually got that about 5-10 minutes into play.  Because I have the Micron memory chips, it was identified by EVGA that the controllers might have been having issues, with either their BIOS control parameters, or perhaps getting close to the upper limits of the parameter heatrange. Who knows...but since having installed this VBIOS update, there have been no more screen artifacts, or W10P lost-connection to the video card, blah, blah.

Secondly...my GPU temps running under the old VBIOS was about 68C to a high of 74C, with Micron Memory Artifacts.  Now, my non-thermal padded (waiting for them...at present) updated VBIOS (this thread downloads) is a very cool 62C to 65C!!!  Again, no more blue screens and artifacts.

Now...here's the sneaky part of this VBIOS....(and most welcome!!!!!)  It seems that they also have tweaked the BOOST freq's.  Under my as-shipped VBIOS, my Boot Clock topped out at just under 1800 MHz.  Running under the new VBIOS .72, I now get with no overclock, 2137 MHz, AND AT 65C!

I have no Pre/OC set in place. This is running only under the booted up VBIOS .72

So, at least in my post VBIOS update experience,  on my EVGA GTX1070 FTW card...cooler running by around 7-14 degrees, no more Micron Memory artifacts, and a stock GPU boost clock from 1800, to over 2100 MHz!

I'll install my thermal pad set when I get it...but quire frankly, as of this point of time...this tweaked fan-speed (and obviously...other tweaks in play from stock VBIOS) VBIOS has been what was needed to give me the performance that I expected from the purchase.  I'd be interested to read if anybody else has had a BOOST CLOCK increase (driven by the VBIOS .72) with no over-clocking in play.  I can't be the only one enjoying this perk....

Post edit:  I am now running 54C at a GPU boost clock of 2137 MHz!   No thermal pad kit in place, yet.  Just the VBIOS .72 update.
Program:  P3D v3.4.14, with all sliders max'ed out.  The sim had everything at max, that can be adjusted.  Most impressed.

Final post edit:  I have been in game play for about 1/2 hour.  Taking all my GPU readings into a mean average over this 1/2 hour, these are my results:

GPU temp mean average as reported OSD via Precision 6.0.9. with DEFAULT settings:
62C

Default GPU Boost Clock:  Mean average: 2000MHz
Default Memory Clock: 4007 MHz (of course running as times 2)

Certainly, they (EVGA) are right,  the Thermal Pad Kit is optional, and is not needed after you installing this VBIOS update, to both your dual-BIOS cards, if you have one.  I will install it, because I ordered it, but it is nice to know that you do NOT need the kit installed to achieve very cool running and clock performances.

Over and out...

The thermal pad mod is not intended to reduce your main chip gpu temperatures. It is meant to reduce the vrm temperatures that cannot be monitored with software like precision x or afterburner. Most likely why the blue screens and artifacts stopped after the vbios update was because the vrm was running too warm on your card and the increased fan speed over the card lowered the vrm temps enough to keep the card stable enough to use. I installed every thermal pad they gave me for my 1070 SC card because of the fact that I cannot monitor my vrm and vram temps with software and i feel better knowing they have proper thermal pads installed now like they should have from the start. Just like every other aftermarket cooling option has on it (msi, asus, gigabyte etc)

I got my pads today took exactly 1 month... installed no problems other than tricky led plug. Thanks EVGA, my first EVGA product and I will not let this deter me from buying from you again in the future, so long as this is the end of the issue.

A pair of tweezers made the plugs a piece of cake to take out and put back in.

Damm, tweezers, so simple, why didn't I think of that!! The pads etc were fairly straight forward, but I spent at least as much time with those darn little plugs then everything else combined.  I was furious with those plugs. Now furious with myself. Tried screwdriver. Tried fingers, took ages. Almost snapped them.  Tweezers, probably a couple of minutes right? Sheesh...

Re: Update 11/9/16 with NEW BIOS - EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070/1060 PWM Temperature Upadate 2016/11/25 05:19:16 (permalink)
Got mine yesterday, installed today. All easy. For SC and standard ACX3.0 users, make sure that the cables of the LED connector do not block the rear fan. Luckily I checked if the fans were turning freely before installing the card and one wire had looped up and was blocking the fan.

There is no tracking for thermal pads shipment.  I received mine through a normal USPS letter envelope.

An EVGA Representative in Brazil that told me about the tracking  number. Don´t have more details about this.

Flavio, I'm From Brazil also (Foz do Iguaçu).

I had to RMA an old GTX 660TI once, to EVGA on USA,
Took around 1 month to get my card back.
They don't send a tracking number on the box until it arrives to their Carrier in Brazil, and then they will deliver to the Correios (now you will get a tracking number).

Probably, with the thermal pads, it will come in an envelope, with no tracking number. Just my guess.

Regards man!

Edit:

Checking my old e-mails of the RMA process, they do send a tracking number, but not the usual of the postal (RS123456789BR), they send a tracking number to be used on their associated carrier.

A friend from Brazil told me that he won't RMA his card because couriers that handle packages are on strike there. Does that include the postal workers? If so, then whining on here is not going to fix the problem is it.

Nobody is whining in here. And your friends information is wrong. There is no current strike of couriers or oficial mail at the moment in Brazil.

I think he probably meant the customs workers and I misunderstood.
That would significantly delay any airfreight into the country being delivered.

I'm still waiting for mine as well. Says that it shipped on Nov 2nd, but still nothing. Not really complaining since it was free, just have been wanting to redo my cabling with the powerlinks but no point doing that if I have to take the cards out again.

Just wish it didn't say 1-2 weeks when it has already been just over 3.

chizowI could have returned my 1070 SC to Best Buy or Advanced RMA'd it for a new unit, but I'll go ahead and do the thermal pad and BIOS mod myself to help them cut their losses.

Lol. First, you buy a product from Best Buy. Why, to make sure one of the worst retailers in terms of pricing doesn't lose business? And now you are willing to fix the mistake of a manufacturer by performing a mod and flashing BIOS yourself so "they can cut their losses"???

Amazing.

No genius, the point was to help EVGA cut their losses by performing the updates myself instead of RMA'ing to them for a new card and having them pay shipping 2 ways and eating a loss on an Open Box/RMA card.  As  for buying from Best Buy, their price was similar, or better than competing retailers at $418 and I get 6% cash back along with 45 days no questions asked return policy and I used $170 worth of rewards to make it a $250 purchase.  Keep paying full price at Amazon and Newegg though and think you're getting a good deal! LOL.
