Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070 PWM Operating Temperature Update 2016/12/02 11:57:51 (permalink)
I just got my RMA'd GTX 1060 SSC. It arrived in a brand new retail package. It has a cold plate installed along with the new thermal pads. There is one problem though. It did not come with the new vbios installed so the fans don't even begin to spin until it's at or above 65*C which I really don't like. I have tried everything I can think of the to flash the new vbios onto this card but it just won't take the flash. I have tried it in safe mode with the executable in admin mode with anti virus turned off and all of that. Still no flash. I have talked to support about it, they sent me an attachment with a bios for the card with detailed instructions on how to flash it in....................it won't take the flash. Nice card but I want a better fan curve in the bios itself. I know, MSI Afterburner or EVGA PrecisionX. I would rather that the bios had a proper fan curve on it just to be safe.

I am on an AMD system with Win10 64Bit. Is there a trick to get this bios to flash or am I in a boat without a paddle here? And why didn't the card come with the new bios pre-installed?

Edit: Oh yeah, in gpu-z the sub vendor is undefined.

i cant get the new update to work for me, it does what some others have reported which is open a cmd window, show text screen, goes blank and when it comes back the cmd windows is missing. Tried hitting "y" without seeing the cmd window and disabled any process or application that i could before starting update.exe but that didn't work and what has worked for others (resetting comp multiple times) didn't work neither. I'm on Intel platform running update.exe as admin as well. Any help is appreciated 1070 SC, i5 6600k

You need to contact EVGA since you have an AMD system, they will supply you with the BIOS you need.

I've already been that route and the bios they sent me didn't work either.

Edit: I love the video card. Other than this small inconvenience the card works flawlessly.

Zero fan mode works just fine, if you load the master bios. If you load the secondary bios to the master switch, you will not.

Can confirm that, although i made a better fan curve for more cooling atm without pads :)

They have advised me that maybe I should try to flash the card on another computer and see if that works. I'm going to try it on an old XP rig and see if this card will take the flash over there. The only thing is that that is also an AMD rig. I don't have any Intel computers to try a flash on.

I received my thermal pads today, about 2 weeks after requesting them.  Some of the pads were sticky, a few were not.  Are the pads that aren't sticky on either side damaged?

Is there any new BIOS for 06G-P4-6161-KR vga cards? In an old forum topic i found some info about it but the links are removed.
Now, i have the 86.06.13.00.60 BIOS version for my registered 06G-P4-6161-KR card. I'm eager to update it for better PWM Fan speed.

Zero fan mode works neither in master bios nor slave ... I can adjust the fan curve manually but I am not able to set the rpm to less than 500 …

Did you load one of the new bios options for your card? If you have, the zero fan mode should work fine. If you somehow loaded the secondary bios, which by looking at your power target and lack of zero fan speed shows that it should be a slave bios loaded on the master switch, then you need to load the correct bios. If they have the wrong bios linked, then i will alert them and they can load the correct one.

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070 PWM Operating Temperature Update 2016/12/05 01:35:47 (permalink)
Hey Scarlet thx for your help.

I finally managed that the zero fan mode is working for my card, by trying the following bios versions:
"https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/?architecture=NVIDIA&manufacturer=EVGA&model=GTX+1070&interface=&memType=&memSize=&did=10de-1b81--&since="
Actually I am running the newest version and everything seems to work.

However, the factory bios and the bios from the first page of the thread didn't result in an active "zero fan mode". I tried to flash the master AND slave eprom but either my rpm was limited at ~1000rpm or ~500rpm ... I also played a game, had a blackscreen and the bios was reseted. My minimum rpm was automatically set back from ~500rpm to ~1000rpm.

It should be ok now and I locked the bios with "nvflash64 --protecton". If I don't recognize a bios fallback again I am super happy with the card. However I don't know why my card doesn't idle the fans by factory default. It was one of the main reasons to buy the EVGA and was also advertised by the manufacturer. The customer should not be forced to repair this issue by himself.

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070 PWM Operating Temperature Update 2016/12/05 08:02:25 (permalink)

Well, starting to become worried about my situation. I have a GTX 1060 FTW+ (06G-P4-6368-KR) recently bought here in Brazil. in the first alert about the issue on the EVGA's page, this model was listed as affected by it. I've ordered the thermal pads, received a confirmation e-mail in Nov 14, saying that it will be shipped soon, and status in the thermalmod page was "Awaiting shipment".

In the meantime:
- No BIOS update was released for this model, albeit being the top of the line in the EVGA's 1060 lineup;
- The model was unlisted from the affected models, even having an ACX 3.0 cooler (and the informations on the page are VERY inconsistent - there is now a unlisted model (06G-P4-6163-KR) with an available BIOS update;
- The thermalmod page now says that I don't have an eligible model (what happened with my CONFIRMED thermalpad request?)

And my video card, even using stock configuration and with a Cougar 140mm and two 120mm fans at full speed blowing air over it, have a 70-74 degrees celsius when gaming (don't even dare to try to run Fumark). Setting the card's fans to 100% don't help too much, temperatures stays around 70C. And an RMA is the last option, since here in Brazil an RMA means 1-2 months until the new card arrives.

Would like an update about this situation. Each time that I look the thermalmod page, the infos are changed.

Well, since no answers were provided here for the post above, I've tried to contact the EVGA's Latin America support (in the e-mail address that said that my thermal pads are waiting shipping). And this was their answer:
=============================================================
hank you for your recent request for an EVGA Thermal Mod kit and for being an EVGA customer. We are sending you this email with good news about your EVGA product with model number: 06G-P4-6368-KR. After further investigation and testing, we can confirm that all components on your product are well-within specification, and the optional Thermal Mod and VBIOS update are not recommended for your product.

GTX 1060's that were reviewed and don't need any updates or thermal pads.

• 06G-P4-6368-KR
• 03G-P4-6367-KR
• 06G-P4-6366-KR

We have cancelled your request for this optional Thermal Mod update and thank you for your patience while this was being further investigated. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact EVGA Customer Support at (888) 881-EVGA(3842), or email us at .
 ===================================================
And, in the next day...my thermal pads arrived at home. Go figure.

Now I'm still thinking about installing the thermal pads, since my video card still runs hotter than usal.

So what would the symptoms of this problem be?

Mine is rebooting my computer when playing some games. Total war rome 2 does it in battles. But games like Battlefield one is totally fine.

I'm going to get the thermal pads on order and update the bios. I'll take it apart when I get the pads and see what it looks like.

Did the bios update, loaded into rome2 and splat a few minutes later (as expected.)

Pulled the card apart and not one of the vram chips was touching the thermal pads and only half of the vrm were. :(

Is there any cause for concern if one of the vram chips (middle of the 3 big ones near the ling line of R22 chips (I think these are VRM)) is discolored and slightly burnt looking. Should I just RMA it or wait?

Does anyone know if the thermal pads are pre installed now on all 10 series cards by default?  About to step up to a 1080 and if so would like to send the currently unopened pads I got for my 1070 back to EVGA so they can send the pads out to someone who needs them.

So I still have to wait and hope the pads for my classified will come soon... Status says: "Pending shipment"

Successfully i got a new BIOS update (86.06.27.01.60) for my 06G-P4-6161-KR card from the EVGA support. Why dont you post its link here or in an other topic? It would be very useful for every 06G-P4-6161-KR owner.
My idle GPU temperature was 43 °C (0 RPM) with the first BIOS release, now with the new one, it is just 32 °C (625 RPM) and It's still very quiet.

Thx EVGA support team!

Requested Thermals at 09/11/2016, and they arrived yesterday (12/07/2016) at my country (Brazil).

Installed then yesterday night btw.
I did run Heaven Bench. to make a comparison from before/after, and did notice a little drop on the temps (65-70ºC before pads, and 60-65ºC after pads), but, I'm not sure if this might be from the Artic Silver TIM I have used also.

Also, LED plug is a P.I.A to take out. Although, pretty simple and easy to install the Pads.

Case: Asus Z370-G Box / MB: Asus Z370-G / CPU: Intel I7 8700K / Mem.: 16GB (2x8) 3000Mhz Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 / GPU: GTX 1080TI FTW3 / A.I.O. W.C: EVGA CLC280 / PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G3 750W

Mine thermal pads finally arrived today. Is this EVGA method of installing the pads any different from those on YouTube? Anyone used Arctic MX-4 thermal paste with this GPU (1080FTW) ? Any benefit over the EVGA one?
