Updated some pics and results with GTX 480 SLI: http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=299921 Arrived about an hour ago, here's a few pics to whet your appetites. Newegg overnight shipping ftw, ordered around 6pm EST and arrived about 1pm EST. Already have everything installed and the newest drivers installed as well, but still need to do some settings/tweaks before I get everything running the way I had it before. First thing first, the fan noise is WAY overstated, its not much different than the GTX 280, although there are some definite differences I'll cover in pics. 100% is loud, no doubt about it, but I don't game at 100% and from what it looks like, I won't have to with the 480 either even at healthy overclocked speeds. Gonna check out some PhysX performance first, as I think some are interested in how much benefit there is with and without a dedicated PhysX card with a GTX 480. I left a GTX 280 installed just for this purpose lol. I may even put the other 280 back in and run SLI with a GTX 480 as the PhysX processor for kicks. For the 3D Vision guys, unfortunately the latest 197.41 WHQL are giving the no stereo controller error msg...so I'll have to tinker with that a bit to get it working. I'll test that out as soon as I run some prelim benches in normal 120Hz mode. Anyways here's some pics, I'll add more as I go. EVGA T-shirt peeking up at me..... 480 box, usual EVGA classy style, no embossed metallic lettering though like previous boxes Card and bundled accessories....the case badge is in one of the compartments with the cables, nice HDMI to mini-HDMI cable in there too, lower gauge but not bad for free Next to a GTX 280, they're roughly the same size, the 280 actually feels heavier though despite the massive radiator on the 480. Also notice the difference in fan size, more on this later. And yes its a BFG, the EVGA is still in my rig now as a glorified PhysX PPU. Installed in case, I may mess with the slot config a bit and also add additional fans (slot blower or spot cool) to focus on that radiator. Configuring this way gives the 480 an x16 lane and the 280 x8 lane. I was a bit worried about my X-Fi sitting in front of the 480, don't want it burning up a $200 sound card lol. Will see how temps are after loading a bit to see if its safe to put a card in front.

Ok so with the fan speed.... a lot has been made of this and there's basically nothing to be concerned about. The GTX 480 fan is infact smaller than the one used for the GTX 280. This is disappointing for sure, as a smaller fan will inevitably need more RPM to push the same amount of air, resulting in more noise and a generally higher pitch under high RPM. Here's some pics to illustrate this clearly: So you can see, the 480 fan is about 1/2" smaller than the GTX 480 fan, some sites have stated 65mm vs. 80mm, which sounds about right. How this translates into real world differences, again, you'll end up seeing the GTX 480 fan spins at a higher RPM at a similar % fan duty cycle compared to the 280. Up to ~80% there is very little difference in fan noise, but compared at 100%, the 480 is without a doubt louder with a higher pitch than the 280 fan. You can see the difference in RPM clearly set at the same fan duty cycle % both set at 70% 280 = 2266RPM 480 = 3003RPM And both set at 100% 280 = 3029RPM 480 = 4700RPM Again, with both set up to 80% there is very little difference and both are bearable in terms of noise, at 100% the 480 fan makes the 280 fan seem rather quiet however.....both are too loud for my tastes at 100%. Now let's see how this translates into some games, first up Batman AA, wanted to see how it performed with and without PhysX: GTX 480 + 280 PhysX @ 1920x1080 4xMSAA PhysX High MIN/MAX/AVG: 41/152/92 GTX 480 + PhysX @ 1920x1080 4xMSAA PhysX High MIN/MAX/AVG: 35/116/76 Now compare this to some previous results in Batman AA thread, including my own with GTX 280 in SLI (1920x1200 to be fair): http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=216711&mpage=1#216711 GTX 280 + 280 PhysX @ 1920x1200 4xMSAA PhysX High MIN/MAX/AVG: 37/98/69 So a single GTX 480 is about the same as a GTX 280 in SLI when it comes to Batman AA, and much faster when you use a fast dedicated PPU. Keep in mind, my old rig was 1920x1200 but limited to 1920x1080 because I changed my panel to a 120Hz Alienware. Still, its very clear there are points in Batman AA that the PPU is the bottleneck and will limit your FPS, so if you're looking at a fast GPU solution like a 470/480 or 470/480 in SLI you'll want a fast PPU to maximize your GPU performance. You can run PhysX on one of those GPUs in SLI but that will cut into your overall SLI scaling performance. I'll revisit this when I get a 2nd 480 in SLI provided I still have my 280. Also notice the GPU temps don't even break 65C with the fan speed set to 70%....this is stock of course but again, I don't see temps being a problem at all under normal gaming scenarios provided you have decent case airflow and you manually set the fan duty cycle to ~70%.

Does anyone else find it odd that BFG is NOWHERE and I mean NOWHERE to be found? Even though they finally put up 2 plain Jane vanilla cards on their website and it took them forever to do that. I think there's things not right at BFG right now between them and Nvidia. I guess we'll see but Newegg not listing any and my reseller vendor search shows nothing. They are a great company too.

OK, so I just added a bunch of fan speed pics and observations in post #2, along with some early Batman AA benchmarks with and without dedicated PhysX PPU: http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=288630 I'll run some benches but I'm going to focus on some things that interested me and weren't covered in any great detail in the benchmark reviews, like PhysX and 3D Vision performance. TBH, things like Crysis and Vantage are pretty generic and easily replicable, so I just don't see too much benefit in running those ad nauseum. Also at some point I'm going to check my max OC threshold and test fan speed/temps at those speeds as well.

Great posts. As you can see, the GTX 480 idles in the lower 40 degrees Celsius range with the fan on 70%. According to Chizow's mods rigs page and signature, he has an Antec 1200. Not much to worry about regarding heat.

Thanks guys, hopefully more come in stock so everyone gets to have some fun. Unfortunately, no metro2033 here, was hoping it was bundled with 400 series launch but unfortunately not, I'll see what Gogamer wants for it and pick it up. Been busy with a few other recent titles so I'll be able to give some feedback on those, like DA: Awakenings and Assassin's Creed 2. I'll run the obligatory Crysis/Unigine/Vantage runs in a bit, gonna see how much this bad oscar OCs first....
