Yeah AB I agree... but... Will I ever at my age be a 32 waist again? Will I wake up one morning and think, dang it.... I need to stop dreaming of calculating WU's in my head. And of course the age old question. What exactly is my name?

I see that brilong from Cisco Systems and recently from [H] has joined overclockers.com today. His 2-3M PPD, multiplied by 2.2 to give 4.4-6.6M PPD, should be enough to end the contest.

Need to make extra money... AB, I'm looking to build a 2P system (or even a 4P if I'm feeling up to it) in the somewhat near future... Have any recommended parts, or helpful info for me? Needs to be useful for folding AND running a super-hyper-threaded Craftbukkit server lol. I have literally massive plans for it... I have an entire (8 person) team dedicated to building up an amazing Minecraft server with me I'm getting a Paypal shop set up for ingame loot, so we'll get money as we go along.

After I posted that and started making supper it occurred to me that's probably what that meant. And that begs another question that a) I could likely find discussed elsewhere here and b) would continue to drag this thread off-topic. But... I'm going to ask anyway. Aren't today's modern GPUs more powerful than today's CPUs? I know it depends on the application and how it's written, but does that apply to folding? I mean, I'm sure my SLI'd 8800GTXs are putting out more than the lightly OC'd e6600 supporting them. And isn't the GTX670 out-folding the i7-920 OC'd at 3.5Ghz supporting it? The net here being that I would think a quad-sli setup should smoke any modern CPU ... right? To drag it back on topic, our internet connection was interrupted overnight for a few hours (I don't know exactly when it resumed as I was alseep) due to the storms around here. But all are cranking full-speed now. Sorry for the interruption. And, seeing recent numbers, I should replace that GTX285 in my content creation box with the GTX480 collecting dust, I'm thinking! Fold on!

Yes the 480 will be a beast by comparision You have a point about the GPU's producing more results/ppd in normal rigs However there is a BigAdv work unit thats only open to CPU's with 16 or more cores running linux (VM ware will work but less ppd) The 4p units run at the smallest 4 CPU X 4 cores and can run beyond 4 CPU X 6,8,12,16 or more cores This is where the points are for a 8104 Work Unit with my 4p 4 CPU X 12 cores I can complete the Wu in just less than 24 hours and hit over 330k points/ppd The fastest can almost reach 1,000,000 ppd in the screen shot: 4p 6168 thats my 4CPU rig (running slow today may need a reboot :() johnerz slot 02 is the CPU for my pc johnerz slot 00 is the 570 for my pc johnerz slot 01 is the 670 for my pc You can see the credit and ppd

The problem is that there arent many if any 4 PCIE dual wide boards in the AMD boards for me to ignore SMP and just go GPU. So if I actually want to go with a 4C system, I would have to go Intel and spend a lot more on the board and CPU. If calculate ("CPU + MB") / "# of GPUs" for an AMD system with 3 GPUs, I might as well go with an Intel system and at least have the potential of some light SMP folding on it. The only thing that is stopping me is that Core 17 WUs suck on NV GPUs and I don't like the idea of investing in AMD GPUs if Pande might do something about using only OpenCL for QRB GPU WUs or NV fixes the OpenCL support.

Yea this would be nice, but $/GPU slot, it would be overkill compared to 2 Z77 boards with 4 slots. FAH does not need 16x on most cards, and if we are taking about QRB and top tier AMD cards, then we would be talking about AMD cards which tend to need less anyway.

QRB extends to both AMD, Nvidia, and Xeon phi Im assuming that once the OpenCL version is running you could run xeon phi's (big bucks for less compute than AMD) Nvidia will eventually get a cuda core and be top dog on compute eventually
