Hi everyone!

I am receiving a new X99 FTW board to go with my 6850k processor later this week. I'll be installing it with 32 gigs of Triton DDR5 and an EVGA 1080! I'm absolutely stoked. The process has been a rollercoaster thus far, with my first attempt to install the board resulting with a blown cap on the board itself--the RMA process has thus been quick and easy, I hope the board didn't hurt my new processor--but funny enough, at the same time this happened, my brand new Corsair NeutronXT 960GB hard disk started suffering some major read/write issues. I'll be returning it for a refund.\

Now that I have an m.2 board on the way, what high end storage solution should I go for that's roughly in the same realm as the NeutronXT, but in the PCI-SSD form factor and feature set? Is Samsung still the gold standard?

Looking forward to joining the EVGA club once more.

For storage you could go for an SSD or choose a mechanical hard drive. It really depends upon how much digital info you want to store.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

Yeah, I have two 1 TB seagate platter drives ready to go, as well as an external 3TB drive. I have tons of storage! I was looking to use this as my C drive for games and whatnot. Ever played Total War: Shogun 2 on a non-ssd? The load times. Oh, the load times...

TomsHardware is recommending these Samsung EVO 950 512GB, but I'm not sure about their reliability, or if there a new, better options out there.

I am using a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 and it is super fast but I cannot say I notice any speed difference between it or my RAID0 SSD set up other than seeing the benchmark numbers. Had I not sold my old computer, I would probably would have just used the SSDs out of it since they were fairly new.

    Samsung still rules the M.2

Retail unit - SSD 950 PRO NVMe

I think my Intel 750 PCIe SSD is great.

Just watch your PCIe lane restrictions when using M.2

I run my "library files" to a mechanical drive

Yeah, unfortunately for end users the NVME m.2 boot times and game load speeds are the exact same as a good quality SATA III SSD.

Benchmarks and file copies (to arrays that can saturate it) are loads better, but that doesn't translate into faster game loading. I've tested Dragon Age Inquisition and there was zero difference between it, my 850 EVO, or a RAM drive running at 3200MHz.

(Based off of my personal use of a 950 Pro 512GB NVME m.2 drive in a PCIE 3.0 to NVME m.2 adapter board and the two reviews that actual test boot and game load times).

Thanks guys, probably will go with the samsung EVO 950. I don't see a time in the future when I'll have more than 2 1080s in this rig, so it's probably okay to go with the m.2.

Doesn't help that I feel a little burned by Corsair at the moment :<

Corsair is much like EVGA when it comes to customer service, they will fix ya up if you are in the warranty period for the drive.

Samsung 950 Pro and the OCZ RD400 are pretty much the only m.2 PCIE SSDs with any retail availability. The 960 Pro is coming soon though, if you have a SATA SSD to use in the meantime might be worth waiting.
