I bought a gtx 970 a couple weeks ago and it was great. It buzzed like crazy, but hit boost clock of 1278. Returned that card and got one that doesn't buzz but only boosts to 1240. Any reason why I've lost 38mhz with this new card? Not a huge deal as I can oc it up to 1278 or beyond, but I'm a PC noob and just wanted an explanation. Thanks.

Yes, the reason is because every core is different. Gpu boost 2.0 is requiring more power or something along that line compared to the old card, so it doesn't boost quite as far. That is all it is. Most people call it the Silicon lottery.

I'll take a slight clock decrease over the buzzer I had that's for sure. That sound made me not wanna play and feel bad about my purchase.

I can understand that. I have never been bothered by coil whine thankfully. I heard it start once, changed my psu, and it was history.

To add to Scarlet-Tech, I remember someone mentioned earlier that your factory boost clock is leveled according to your ASIC %. So this new card probably has a lower ASIC than the last. Check ASIC  in GPU-Z to make sure.

As far as silicone lottery goes, perhaps. Do you recall your ASIC from last card at all?

Actually lower ASIC % = winning silicon lottery when running LN2.
