Thank you:)

I just finished the first two work units on my GPU's, a pair of 8070 whatever that is :)

Apparently my system would be able to tjurn out 59.000 point pr. day, but I doubt it would make it a full day. One of my graphic cards would melt first(Have them in SLI, but with stock aircoolers, the top one get's quite warn during long sessions) I guess this has highlighted a weakness in my current setup. Fixing it could become 'problematic' though interesting :)

Yes, it can get very hot running 2 GPU's if the slots are close. I'm running a 570 in the top slot and a 670 in the second, but they are not currently overclocked so the temps are.......

70c for the top 570

59 for the 670

both on custom fan profiles using Afterburner - Precision X is also good for this

you can also fold on just the 1 GPU if you wished, that would keep the temps down as well

How warm is "quite warm"?  GPUs can run pretty hot without much fear of damage.

Have you changed the fan speeds at all?  You can set that with EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner.  I have my cards running at 70% fan speed constantly, and it keeps the temperatures several degrees C cooler than the default option of "adjust the fan speed up only if it's getting dangerously warm."  It is somewhat loud, though.

Also make sure you remove the dust from all your components on a somewhat regular basis.  I've seen notable temperature drops after a good cleaning coming after a few months of buildup.

Welcome Nephross. One thing not mentioned. take your cards out of SLI mode for folding/ sli does not help and can actually hinder folding.

When I say "quite warm" I actaully mean scorching hot :S The top card was running at around 90degress celcius with fans hitting the rev limiter off 100% at times.. (using precision to keep track of temps and fan speed ect. :) )

I might have to take it apart and see if the cooler isn't seated properly or something.

(What I really need to do, is gather up some money and do that watercooling loop I have been planning for the better part of a year )

@jinihammerer - I'll try that when I put them back to work tonight.

Re:New EVGA Folder Check-IN 2013/05/03 11:47:18 (permalink)
if it's just the top card  just try blowing it out first
second add some additional Airflow to the case
looking at your rig... only two visible fans... Im guessing it could be an issue too

the top card gets hotter because airflow is restricted by the other card

secondly if the air in the case is hot/warm - low flow - the air that it does get will be too hot to keep the card adequately cool

my 570 is two years old going on 3 and sits ant 60c when folding

my tri SLI 670 rig the GPUs also stays below 60c (even the top card) Love seeing them a 50c

as for the WC loop ..I here ya..
Im doing one myself this month replacing the h70 with a Koolance system

however Im not doing the GPU's in that rig yet
Im just putting in the rads(for a complete GPU and CPU cooling system) and heatsink for the CPU
Im going to swap out the three 670's to the second rig later and put two or three 780's or Titans Hydrocoppers in

then my 570 will go to my bro for his rig

Hmm.. I'll pull it out tomorrow and see if I can't clean it up a bit.
Regarding the airflow of the case. I have 2 140mm and 1 120mm fan in the front of the case blowing in fresh air, so overall the flow should be pretty decent.
The lower card is doing just fine in temps, so it's just the restricted flow for the top card that is a problem :)

I'm just gonna say thanks for all your input and kind helpfullness- It's a rare thing these day :)

This may be a stupidly obvious question, but is it possible to move your second card to the third PCIe slot?

Zagen... yes.  Depending on the motherboard design... Some are possibly different but on my machine both the upper and lower slots run at 16X.  No problem.  I also like the separation of cards for cooling.

Unfortunately this is not one of those boards :( The lower slot, the black one, is only a 4x slot- so I wouldn't be able to utilize SLI and since this is my only PC, that's not really an option

Hi, just started folding a bit since I built my new/used rig (Been on a P4 for almost 10 years). Kind of just doing CPU stress testing with it at this point. Might as well put the electricity for it to good use... Having some stability issues but I think it's voltage related, as the motherboard defaulted to some low voltages for the cpu and ram. Will be tearing down a GTX 480 that I just picked up cheap, remove any dust under the shroud, sand the heatsink and apply some high-end thermal paste. Then I'll be seeing how much I can undervolt the 480 to try and tame the heat and power usage.

It's getting warm so I can't be heating the room too much but when winter comes, I will be setting it up in lieu of a space heater. I may go ahead and try to fold for the EVGA bucks anyways, since I am super conservative on utilities but one of my roommates is grossly wasteful. I might as well get my money's worth!

Welcome!
You'll be fine for the bucks if you only fold the 460@stock 24/7 + CPU when you sleep.
You've just joined the greatest team going!

Hey all - I figured it was polite to drop in and say hello, seeing as I'm new and all! I'll be folding part time until I can afford to get a  dedicated folding rig set up but I do run Boinc 24/7. I have two systems: Main rig is 3770K @ 4.5Ghz + 7950 + 7850. Dedicated Boinc Rig is: 3570K @ 4.3Ghz + 2 x 7950's. Incomplete rig is a Pentium G860 with no GPU as yet.
I should point out that I'm with team OCN for Boinc (ducks and hides!). . . . . but for folding, I'll be doing a bit here and a bit there

Main: 3770k @ 4.5Ghz, 7950 @ 1100, 7850 @ 1050.
Boinc Box: 3570K @ 4.3Ghz, 2 x 7950's.
Spare part Build. Pentium G860 + GPU coming soon!!

Hi Guys, pretty new to this as well but will be joining for some part time folding using my main rig. Then eventually look at full time folding on my media server in the next couple weeks.

I assume you've downloaded the client from folding.stanford.edu?  If so (or if you didn't, do so, then) put in whatever username you want (though I'd recommend folding as your EVGA name for ease of obtaining your EVGA Bucks down the line) and team number 111065 (that's EVGA's number).  I'd also strongly recommend getting a passkey here and copying it over to the appropriate field so you don't make any typos.  Without a passkey you won't get bonus points, and they make up the large majority of points earned on pretty much any semi-recent hardware.  The point levels required to get Bucks basically require you to be getting bonuses.

Note that you won't see any bonus points until after you've turned in 10 WUs with the passkey.

You don't need to do anything when shutting down your computer.  The client writes checkpoints every so often (default is 15 minutes) so you don't lose too much work, and the current version pretty much never has issues during shutdown/restart.

If your machine is going to be offline for a while it's recommended that you tell the client to not get a new WU before it's shut down.  To do that, you'd open up Advanced Control (click on the F@h icon in the systray), then right-click on the slot(s) in the Folding Slots area and select Finish.  This will tell the client to not get new work once it's finished with its current work, though it will get new work as soon as you boot up the computer again.

Hey everyone, New folder over here :) Currently folding with a HP xw6600, and a gtx 460.

Quick question though, If I have an existing passkey from a different team I don't need to change it to fold for EVGA right? So all I would need to do is change the team number in the client?
