Ok guys, just found the whole idea of folding tonight so I thought I would get in on it. I was looking around at other posts and it seems that you guys maybe able to help me maximize my folding. My rig info is in my sig and any info you guys could give me on how to make the folding performance better than just having the GPU and CPU clients running in my system tray. Thanks, R3V

Are you looking to OC that i7-920 any more? That would make a big difference in what to recommend.

Yes as soon as my megashadow comes in I will push it further. I am running that horrible stock cooler at the moment. Right now I am running the GPU sytray client. Is that as good as I can do atm?

You can also run the SMP2 client on the i7. Download it from Stanford. There are some good threads around here that will give all the details on installing it, making sure it's set up correctly, and good monitoring tools. (HFM.net) Remember DO NOT open the viewer, this really slows the client down and some are reporting crashing from it.

Once you do OC the i7, if you are ok with linux\VMWare, you can look at possibly moving to those setups. There are Stickies here that go through those setups in detail.

Good luck. Ask questions when you need help, there are plenty of people here willing to help.

Thanks rj for the info. I will set up the CPU client as soon as i get my cooler. Is it possible to run the same clients at the same time from different pc's while logged into the same username?

You're welcome. If you want to start with the SMP, you do not have to wait for the cooler, unless you are already seeing high temps without maxing out CPU usage.

    Yes. (^^What he said^^)

The large output folders, those that make more PPD than me, are all running multiple computers with their username on them. I am running 3 computers at the moment (no linux\VMWare) with 2 classic uniprocessor clients, 2 SMP2 clients, and 7 GPU clients all having the same username.

Just remember to read through the guides once before starting the install, you can find all the little tips and use them during the setup rather than trying to go back and make changes. This is one process where it pays to be patient first and get things rolling along before trying to get every last PPD out of your equipment. You will probably notice that folding is one of the most demanding applications out there, many people have had stable machines by most stress tests and still got BSOD when they tried folding (especially if you get into VMWare -bigadv).

K guys. I now have the SMP beta downloaded and I just set all my options and am running the program. Each time the command prompt says it is trying to unzip the file and it will never open the core. It then retries and the process repeats. Any clues on how to remedy this?

Since you apparently play games according to that pic under your name, I would recommend staying away from -bigadv, go SMP.

Delete the folder where you did the install to if you need to get rid of it. Are you sure you need to redo it? Where did you install it? Most people have a problem with running it from the Program Files directory due to permisions, so we move it to another location (C:\WinSMP\   for me). Did you set a Windows password? You need to have that set on your computer and enter the same password during the setup.

I know some people were having problems with the instructions from Stanford, but those are the ones I used. Some things I supplemented with reading the posts here (which flags to run, which setup works best with which CPU, stuff like that).

If you haven't got one yet, make sure you have a passkey from Stanford before you do the setup. This is different from the password.

The install.bat needs to be run using the command prompt which needs to be run as administrator. Then the client needs to be run with the -configonly -smp flags. If Username, Team, Passkey, etc. need to be changed, you can run the client with these flags again to change them.

Hope I got an answer in there somewhere.

Ok heres the lowdown haha. I had that problem so I went to Stanfords guide and tried to follow it. I installed it in C:\User\R3V\FAH

It says to open the cmd so I do that then it says to type install.bat in and it doesnt work for me. I also open up the install.bat file inside the unzipped folder and its has an error 5 message so it did nothing. Do i have to open the install.bay file before opening the exe?

    Yes.

You go to the Start menu and find Command Prompt and Right Click and Run as Administrator. Once Command Prompt is running, you have to navigate to the folder (cd c:\user\r3v\fah) and enter install.bat. This will ask for domain\user, this is related to your computer not fah, usually what is already there is correct, but just check when it comes up (I use HAF\Owner since I named the computer HAF in windows and I am logged in as Owner). The it will ask for your Windows password. And then you will need to enter it again to confirm. You should then see the double line stating that it ran properly.

Now it ran through and downloaded all the files and decompressed successfully. Now it is stuck at 0 out of 500000 steps. Is this a good sign? lol

Did you run the exe file with the -configonly and -smp flags to get your info in there?

Make sure that the spelling is correct for what the directory structure actually is (is it users not user?). I just copied what you typed earlier.

Did you get that double message to come up saying MPI is working?

When you are entering your settings, it will ask (small/normal/big) you will probably want to set big, gives larger work units that will get more points. The advanced settings do not need to be changed. Once your info is in, you should create a shortcut on the desktop to the client .exe file. In the properties of the shortcut, there are a couple of things to get set up before starting the client. (I will wait for your response to continue)

K got through all of that I am pretty sure and the prompt exited and I fired the exe back up and now it says 600 out of 500000 steps. So it actually moved from 0 so i suppose this is good. It has been stuck at 600 however for around a minute or so.

These thing do take that long per "frame"  TPF can run 5 or 6 minutes with only a mild OC.

When you started the client back up, did you have any flags attached? I recommend -smp -verbosity 9 -advmethods. To get the bonus point work units, you need -smp and -advmethods, -verbosity # tells the client how detailed a log you want to keep (more detail means more info for others to help solve problems).

Are you running HFM.net yet? This will help you track progress, PPD, current wu, past performance, all sorts of goodies to help you maximize your PPD.

Negative on HFM but if it is pretty simple I will try it out. If you might have to walk me through it I would hate to take up more of your time. Do i type those different things in the prompt somewhere to attach the flags. Also does your internet connection have any significance on any of the folding or anything of this nature?

    Welcome to the team!
HFM is pretty easy to set up
    download from here
    set up guide

You usually type these into your shortcut so that it reads
    foldingwhatever.exe -smp -advmethods -verbosity 9
makes it easier to change them

If you have a bad or slow internet connection, it will take longer to download and upload work units (wu).

If you read up a couple of posts I suggested making a desktop shortcut to the client. In the properties of that shortcut there is a Target text box. In that box will be the exe file including the directory structur to get to it. At the end of that line you simply add on (with a space first) "-smp -verbosity 9 -advmethods". Then whenever you start the client, it will have the flags entered. Also, if you haven't been using it so far, use CTRL c to stop the smp client.

It is getting late (2am) so I will be heading to bed. Give HFM a try when you can. Search it a bit here on the forums and you should be able to find any info you need.

Just noticed you don't have any folding showing on the left here. If you have not yet, you need to enter your folding username into your profile for it to show. And hopefully you folding username is the same as your profile username so you can start collecting your EVGA Bucks.

Best of luck and welcome to the team.
