This is well executed. I hope that they succeed. It's a breath of fresh air to see someone other than Clevo (sold as Sager, Exotic PC, Digital Storm, Eurocom, and others) design a laptop which is meant to be upgraded. This laptop is limited in GPU capability, but it is also much thinner than Cleve-based laptops. It's an understandable compromise, and a great launch product! The fact that they are creating a marketplace of upgrade components... and even more, the fact that they are creating a marketplace for buying and selling used components between users, is really nice! Have you ever seen a laptop with a screen which is so easy to replace!?!? The captive screws is a great touch.

Most manufacturers are of the Apple mindset of forced obsolescence. It'll be a hard sell to most manufacturers to adopt a modular parts setup for laptops. They want you to buy a whole new one every 4 years, not piecemeal parts in all the time.

I buy apple machines mostly because they work for years fine
my MacBook has a SSD long before competitors adopted them
  Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow Edition + Corsair AX1600i PSUMy desktop uses the ThinkVision 31.5 inch P32p-20 Monitor.My sound system is the Edifier B1700BT

There is merit in Apple products, but they're not for everyone. I prefer iPads and iPhones because of the software ecosystem. As aircrew, an iPad is almost a necessity with apps like Foreflight. Not a fan of forced obsolesce though.

This looks interesting, but probably will not work out.
The reason why laptop makers disallow as much user-servicability, aside allowing things to be smaller, is that it is less profitable. Changing RAM for example. If I sell you a PC and you upgrade the RAM, I have no profit from it. Same if its a laptop. However, if I disallow you from changing the RAM, then I'll get the profit from the upgrade or sell you a new laptop with a premium.
It's good to hear that there are still people trying. I would consider buying one if I were in the market for one.

I like the idea of being able to upgrade or repair a laptop more easily than current types of laptops. Really hard to even replace a fan in some laptops. All about profit is correct. Everyone wants you to buy a new computer as often as possible.

So I had a look at what configurations you can buy. Currently, they only list Intel CPUs (probably will stick with that as I suspect they may have made a deal). Currently no option for seperate GPU either, stuck with integrated Intel XE. I am not sure, but it also appears that there is only one NVMe slot? Are there SSD slots?
Keyboard options are also limited and no EU power adapter yet. I wish for something like the TrackPoint, I am one of those people that love those things and actually brought new nibs for them.
The expansion slots also look like USB-C and the modules seem to be just converters? So the modules are just proprietary USB-C devices, aren't they?

Eh, all laptops should be like this in the first place tbh.
Most laptops you're lucky if you can upgrade the RAM and the storage, the rest? Good luck. Either you buy a new one or you keep your old one.
I could see companies finding a way to make sure only their components fit on their laptops (so you're forced to buy it from them) but it would be an upgrade.

Not proprietary. Framework is publishing the design and schematics for third parties to create whatever module they want. They are encouraging third parties to latch on, make cool things, and offer those cool things to Framework's customers. If you watch the video, you will know this. As they say, it will take time for the ecosystem to exist, and it will take time for third parties to have enough faith that the ecosystem has a sufficient lifetime. Once the ecosystem is established, Framework expects a lot of third party modules to become available; and Framework welcomes that. In the interim -- as he said in the video -- they are providing what is necessary to jump-start the ecosystem, hoping that it will catch on.
