I just got a GTX 1080 SC Gaming, and am having heat issues with the default fan curve. When playing games, the temp immediately jumps to 82-83C, and throttling kicks in. I downloaded EVGA Precision and created a custom fan curve, which runs games around 70C, which is awesome, but I have to have Precision open for it to work.

How do I configure the card with a custom fan curve all the time, so I don't have to run Precision at all? This is my first EVGA card, so assume I have 0 context about what software you're using please.

Short of a custom BIOS, you're going to need to use the software all the time.  Just set it to automatically load.

I would not recommend "Just set it to automatically load."
It is best to use only when needed (Gaming), ATM.
Once you set the Fan Curve you can then Exit from EVGA Precision X OC and you will retain the settings you want until you reboot the Computer.

Is there a guide for setting the fan curve in the BIOS? Having to use Precision at all is a pretty terrible user experience, and the default fan curve is only appropriate when I'm doing nothing, which is pointless.

There is no custom fan curve in the bios. They are referring to a custom bios for the card. You either have to live with the heat with stock setting on the card or use precision or afterburner.

82-83 C is not hot enough for the card to throttle clocks, unless the target temperature is set low. What clocks speeds are you seeing under load? As others have suggested, a more aggressive fan curve will help the situation. You set this curve in the PrecisionX software, no need to mess with the card BIOS

I have use versions of Precision or Afterburner for years and they are always running.  Currently I am using Afterburner since the version of Precision for the 1080 was not working well for me.  I just set it and forget it.  I don't see any issues with the computer by leaving afterburner open and running in the background.

Some users are having MS Office Problems with Precision running in the background and as an active program.
Myself I have seen Quicken Charting issues with Precision running in the background and as an active program.
For users who ONLY Game then it will not be a problem to keep Precision running in the background and as an active program.
Also their is no need to Overclock your GPU while doing email and web browsing on the internet.

Good to know, I guess I have not encountered the issues you mentioned.  I would certainly agree with the OC stuff.  Once I have my fun with the OC and benching I typically dial back my settings to a milder overclock anyway so it is not really stressing things out too much.  For me they down clock anyway when I am at the desktop or doing light duty web browsing so I guess I never really thought of it as an issue.

Although I typically don't like programs running in the background, unless absolutely needed.  I guess I make an exception this this software.

When it comes to EVGA Precision X I have profiles setup and when I overclock my GPUs I select one of the Profiles and then I Exit EVGA Precision X.
My Clock and Fan Settings are retained until I restart my computer.
I really do not have a need to show information on my screen like FPS and Temps so I do not use the OSD or other items that are featured in EVGA Precision X.

Yup, I understand where you are at and it makes complete sense.  Nice system btw.  I just went to your mod rigs.  :)

If your card jumps straight to 83 then you might have issues with the card. I have a FE and was testing temps for another forum and it took me 4 hours playing COD Black Ops 3 at stock GPU with Everything maxed on COD to reach 80 deg. The SC should be cooler with ACX. Another dude had the same issue with his FE card and had it RMA.
