Now I'm so confused. EVGA has said that the thermal pad mod to cool VRMS does not apply to the Hybrid cards since they don't need this mod? Are people combining two separate issues now in this thread (VRM overheating + BS100%)?? Are the two issues even related?? If the mod doesn't apply to the Hybrid cards (because they don't need it), how come my 1st FTW Hybrid had BS100%?

Well personally, I think the black screen issue *IS* caused by inadequate cooling of the VRMs and/or the VRAM but until EVGA confirm otherwise then it will always be something people will debate over. In my case, using a custom fan profile over the default one did seem to help prevent the instance of black screens as detailed in this thread and that would logically seem to be due to the constantly spinning fans cooling the PCB components. I've also never been able to overclock by more than +250 MHz on the VRAM with my previous card, again something that would almost certainly result in issues if the VRAM is not being cooled properly IMO. I wish I knew if the replacement card I am using has the thermal pads or not. It would seem it does because I have been playing games for hours across the weekend with the VRAM clocked at +400 MHz and I've not noticed any issues or instability (well, Battlefield 1 seems to be a bit crash-prone in DX12 mode but I believe that is a software/driver issue as it does not lead to a black screen or a display driver crash for that matter).

Xap1Han Having exactly the same issues. Can play bf1 multiplayer for few hours, but then i decided to play some single player - the flying mission - and after first few 5 to 10 mins bamm my second (few days old second card in sli, first is almost 3 months old) card just goes to blackscreen with 100% fans and i need to powercycle. Kinda funny. So looks like it might not be a hw issue with bf1 rather then some software/driver crap. So i guess no SP only hours of MP since this issue has happened only in bf1 SP for me. Played like 2 hours of gta V with both gpus at 98-99% ussage, tried hour of haven 4.0 and even 1-2 hours of Rocket league and so far bf1 SP is the only trouble maker so will just hang back and see how it goes before doing some crazy RMA stuff etc. since the warranty is for 3 years. :)
I have the exact same error on exactly the same mssion in Battlefield 1. Its the plane mission when ur shooting down planes above London. I have not recived the error anywhere else. I ordered my card the 05/09/2016 (d-m-Y) Is this a software issue?
Well my guess would be it might be the BS + 100% fans, but honestly its rly weird. I mean my plane mission crashes around when you do the training flight and have to shot down those small zeppelins. Even tried with custom fan profile and made no difference expect that my gpus were around 50-60 degress and gpu loads on both werent even around 60%. I mean is there any way to do some tests that can prove that my second gpu in my sli is plagued by the issue? I tried so far: 1+ hour of witcher 3 - run fine expect the game doesnt like the combination of sli + surround but gpu usages where in 80-90% 1+ hour of haven 4.0 - run fine 2+ hours of gta 5 - both gpu maxed out no issues whats so ever 1-2 hours of bf4 - both gpu maxed out with surround 150% ress + 4xAA on Ultra - run supper smoth without issues. So far i didnt had the issues outside of bf1 so its getting rly weird. Since i have few days left where i could return to gpu for refund and wait few monts and then get another one or wait it out and keep trying where i would have to go and do the RMA thing in worst case scenario.

I got this issue since i have start playing BF1 MP, was playing BF4 everynight with friends with my 1080 since august but since BF1 i got 2 black screen with fans at 100% :/ Think im gonna try the debug mode (im using a custom fan profile so the gpu is always below 60 C)

I can confirm this issue on my GTX 1080 classified. Sometimes the screen turns black and the fans spin up to 100%. Only reboot helps. In games like Bioshock 2 remastered and Fifa 17 the issue arrives after some minutes. in other games like natural selction 2 or cities skylines the issue never appears. downclocking seems to help, but it only delays the time before the next error. pretty annoying.

At least you are lucky enough that your card still works. After my first black screen the card won't even recognize in the computer. :( As I sit here patiently waiting for my replacement card.

I think the confusion is between the 2 different units. The EVGA Hybrid uses an FTW PCB and a different cooler than the DIY Hybrid kit which is based upon the FE.

when I RMA'ed my card, defect wasn't V-sync enabled. I enabled v-sync after the replacement, and no problem. you think v-sync off pushing more FPS is killing the card?

I have V-Sync on and I still get black screens. The only thing that seemed to stop the black screens was to severely underclock the card.

V-sync caps your frames to 60 or 30 fps. in order with that in some games the card downclockes itself when it can easily reach the target 60 fps. for example bioshock 2: my card only clocks there about 1390 mhz because it is enough to get the 60 fps. so there is no black screen because the card is heavily downclocked. the amount of black screens has a lot to do with the clocks i think. but a overclock-failure would not result in black screens. it should show graphic errors or driver crashes and not black screens with 100% fanspeed.

I've had my card since 14th of July and never got this problem, but then I usually run my games with V-Sync on, have a custom fan curve set (70% speed at 65C+) and the only really demanding titles I have played since purchasing it were Fallout 4 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. So a dumb question for the people experiencing this - were you running with unlocked framerate? Default or custom fan curve? I've lodged a support ticket asking about the thermal pads situation, kinda worried now.

am i the only one with the classified who got this issue? the weird thing is that the chip itself is only getting 60 Degrees hot (shown in afterburner). so i am not sure if the vram is getting too hot. but what else would force a 100% fan-curve? this sounds like a emergency-system that bumps up the fans when a part of the card is getting too hot

you can try Battlefield 1 if you have it. recently they had issues with single player BS'ing after about 1:30 hours of playing. luckily, I'm okay playing longer than 2 hours on BF1 SP. but to most of people with Black screen, this seems like a threshold.

Afraid not. I'll try looping Firestrike, alternatively I can try either Doom or wait a bit and try my luck with Dishonored 2 since I'm buying it anyway. But because I'm the odd man out for whom the issue hasn't manifested I can probably just get away with applying for the thermal pads (or buying them myself) and installing them, at least for some peace of mind. Funny how my last three cards all had some issues - my EVGA 760 SC didn't OC at all, Gigabyte 970 G1 had god-awful coil whine and now this.

Monitoring software such as MSI Afterburner and EVGA PrecisionX OC only show the temperatures of the GPU core and not that of the VRAM or VRMs. In my opinion and based on my own experiences, the black screen issue does seem to be a result of VRMs and/or VRAM getting too hot causing the card to shutdown and ramp the fans to 100% to protect itself. I never saw the GPU go above 82 C in summer (when it was ironically stable and black screen-free) but they would happen when the core was between 30 and 75 C. In fact, in a few games the issue happened during pre-rendered cutscenes when the GPU was running at low-power 2D clock speeds (in Mafia 3 and Gears of War 4). If the core wasn't overheating when the black screen issues happened then it stands to reason that it much be something else such as the VRAM or VRMs, especially as I was running with a +250 MHz offset on the memory.

I still maintain my position that the BS100% issue is not caused (solely) by hot temps because I experienced the issue on my 1st FTW Hybrid card, which also cools the VRM. I suggest you all just email EVGA tech support. So much FUD here. VRM is not the same as VRAM...

Recently, there are many customers wanting to know more details about the EVGA GeForce 1080 FTW “Black Screen” issue and we believe we need to make a clear statement to clear all kinds of speculation. The EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW “Black Screen” issue was fixed as of the first week of September and this has been confirmed by all users who have received the replacement units with the issue resolved. Also, all new production has been confirmed to not have this issue after the first week of September. This previous black screen issue was caused by On Semiconductor (VRM IC Manufacturer) VRM IC’s being out of spec, triggering the OCP (Over Current Protection) and will not cause any damage to your system. The percentage of the IC’s that were out of spec has been confirmed by On Semiconductor and is approximately 3% to 4%. Since then, EVGA and On Semiconductor have worked out the solution and RMA replacement action a couple months ago as we stated above. At this moment, all of the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW’s have been corrected and all products in the field are working properly. If you have any questions, please contact our support directly at: support@evga.com. Thanks, EVGA

How does this explain some people that received RMAs as recent as two weeks ago and still experience the issue? Not to be tough on you at all, but there are several long time loyal EVGA customers that are now facing frustrating situations.

Dear ElBartoME, I can confirm that all cards shipping today are 100% updated. I am very sorry for any inconvenience that this did cause and thank you for allowing us to work with you to have your product exchanges once more. ElBartoME
