I'm still waiting on my RMA for a Hybrid card, 2 weeks now "preparing to ship". I'm debating calling quits and just returning it, especially now with these refurb'd reports. I was half way through my 30 days when the RMA was approved, and now that's past, and I'm sure it'll be another week before I actually receive a possibly "new" card. The new Gigabyte looks interesting.

Ksmillie Well I got a raised RMA request from ebuyer when reporting the issue to them ( Still within my returns policy ) I was wondering should I just a direct replacement hoping to not get the same results or just get my money back. Perhaps maybe just RMA it with EVGA directly and get a new card from them with a higher chance of being fixed. But reading this forum post and some others seems like a lot are on there 2nd to 3rd RMA, although mentioned above the RMA issue has been fixed but I am a bit worried now. Thinking if I do just get a refund from ebuyer i'd buy a different card from MSI maybe.
I decided to send my 3rd RMA back to Amazon for a full refund since Evga thinks its ok for customers to pay full price for a card to be given a used card. Not like its our fault that they messed up their hardware, forcing us to send the card back and forth to them, which in turn is a lengthy process and ofc is going to go over the Evga 30 day return term to be eligible for a brand new RMA card (EU only?). Best part was when I received my 2nd RMA card it was brand new and after the "fix" date and it still had the 100%+BS issue. They told me to send it back because they 'let one slip through' (again, they messed up), so I assumed I was getting a band new card..ended up with a used card that ran slower, hotter, didn't overclock as well, and had louder coil whine. I ordered the MSI 1080 gaming X, if your worried/not confident about the whole RMA process then I suggest you do the same to avoid any hassle (wish I did sooner).
Thanks, I guess i'd prob just go ahead and just send it back to Ebuyer for a refund and do the same. Buying the MSi 1080 gaming x, I hope when you get this card that it doesn't have the same issues as this card did. Good luck!

So just got out of the phone with the advanced tech rep, and they said there was a mistake with my first shipment of my first RMA, so they are going to be sending out a Brand NEW one with fix from Factory. Luckily I live close by their main Office in Brea, CA. That's all i wanted going through all this. Is Brand New replacement not a refurb for a Hardware problem that was not my fault or others except the manufacture. Gheeez.. I didn't really care if i got the Gears of War 4 promo either. well it would be nice though . But again, customer service is still great in my opinion. Even though i have been Frustrated with this all week. But i hope who ever has this problem, finds there solution. whether able to stay or to go to another brand. hope all goes well. I hope the new card will work and perform well and no more high temps of 80c +.

Just a little update: I received my new card a little over a week ago and haven't had any problems yet. Brand new card in new packaging and all, manufactured much later on in the process than my old one according to the serial number.

I did return both my original to Amazon and the RMA back to EVGA. I happened to be browsing nowinstock and noticed that Amazon had the GB GTX 1080 Extreme Premium Pack in stock so I added one to my cart and was actually able to checkout before they went out of stock (right after I finished the purchase they went to zero stock). I received the card today and it is currently undergoing burn-in and testing, but I would like to post some information purely for others that might be interested. * The card is massive. And I mean HUGE. I didn't measure it before installing but it takes up 3 full slots and seems to be quite a bit longer than the FTW. * The build quality is far inferior to the EVGA - the card feels flimsy and cheap, and the rear fins were bent just like others had complained. The breakout box is flimsy and cheap, feels like a $5 item from the grab bin at MicroCenter. However the the front panel is very convenient to have for my VIVE and the extra USB 3.0 ports are a nice bonus. * I noticed the actual retail box was NOT sealed, but everything inside was and the card itself was in a sealed package. The box is huge compared to the FTW. * The back-plate is a nice feature but no where near as good as the EVGA - about half the thickness from just eyeballing it. * The card runs hot - approx. 10c more than my FTW even with cooler room temperatures - however I do need to improve the cooling in my case and that should help quite a bit. With the FTW you won't need to worry about that. * I won the silicon lottery this time - my card is able to boost to 2100Mhz *easily* and the RAM is at 10,206Mhz. I have not even messed with the voltages yet, and probably won't at this point. * No coil whine. Yet. EDIT: Yes there is, noticeably louder than the FTW. Does not bother me because I use headphones, but others should be aware. * SLI Bridge is nice considering the price they are going for. So this card doesn't come close to the build quality of the FTW - if you are able to secure a NEW working FTW I would stick with it. I am very pleased with my purchase though *so far*, but only time will tell I know from previous experience that GB quality can be questionable.

Considering getting a Titan XP instead - it's a huge amount of money for a graphics card, but I haven't heard of any issues except that they run pretty hot... and I don't plan on running a custom loop, it would stay on air cooling. Hmmm... I'd like to stay with the 1080 Hybrid but I'm already about to do a 2nd RMA.. tough decision. Take a chance on a 3rd Hybrid, or spend another $400+ for a beast of a card?

Neither. Try a Classified. I said to heck with it, packed up my RMA Hybrid to send back to EVGA tomorrow. Done with the BS 100% issue and the great unknown whether I have a ticking time bomb in my case, and/or a refurb card, that runs slower and hotter than the original card I got. Not going to hijack this thread with my initial impressions of the Classified that I just got. It's a beast. I almost bought the MSI Seahawk or Gaming X due to this shady situation, but I couldn't do it.

i definitely agree with you, i would've been happy with my first card if this hadn't had a hardware problem with the select few (many so far). Good luck to you! happy gaming!

I would have gone with the Classified, but I don't feel confident ordering any of Evga 1080 series given the FTW problems could have spread (Evga silence doesn't help) ..How has your experience been with the Classified? ..I guess there's no need to feel like your hijacking because most people like myself are, at this point, looking for alternatives.

So far my experience is all positive. I posted my initial OC and temps impressions in the Classified thread. It exceeds my Hybrid in performance and temps are only 10-15 degrees warmer in games. No odd stuttering and severe downclocking while gaming like Hybrid. Max while gaming with Hybrid was 58C. Max with Classified while gaming is 69C so far. The Classified is just a massive card but not length wise. It's got girth, haha. The fans are huge and build quality is top notch. I really think there was something still wrong with my RMA Hybrid despite being "fixed" but I'll never know. I was nowhere near temp and power limit but always ran hotter and got voltage throttled down to 2012mhz. I accept getting hit with re-stocking fee if EVGA sees fit. Worth it to be done with this. Regardless, GPU Boost 3.0 is the worst thing to happen to GPU's ever. I hate, hate, HATE it, and can't wait for someone to finally crack the bios to eliminate it. You will always get voltage or power throttled, even if your temps are nowhere near max. In my case, right now (stock bios), the Hybrid makes no sense to me since it suffers the same fate as air cooled cards re: voltage and power throttling. Save the money and buy a regular FTW or another brand of custom cooled card. The closest alternative to the Hybrid would be Seahawk X. But you'll have to connect the fan to your motherboard in which case it'll run at 100%, or get a fan controller. Gigabyte support sucks and their cards have issues too like loud pumps or faulty LEDs and fans, per reviews on NewEgg. Asus, decent, but the triple fan cards are just insane and ridiculous looking, to me. Ditto re: Zotac, that thing is just unnecessary. MSI Gaming X is a solid alternative to FTW I think and what I would've gotten had I not done an audible when I got to the store. In the end I still have some faith in EVGA and will give them a pass on this, right or wrong. I'm sure this is a bad problem that they never expected and are trying to solve it. Just not being open about it. That said, if BS100% happens with this Classified, that will be the last straw.

Overclocks and downclocking with voltage/power/heat seem to just be related to hitting a chips max potential it can run at a certain mhz. I've gone threw 4 classifieds and 2 out of 4 would always downclock cause of voltage no matter what settings I used or even -200mhz underclocked! The only way I can get the 2 good cards to not throw up a limit 1 on any of the 3 is to lower the fan profile to where it will basic lyrics run at 20% and let it get hot in the upper 60s and then it will toss up solid 1s for ea limit regardless if I'm hitting the power/voltage limit. So to me they must build a custom profile for ea chip and if you run it higher then it's profile and something is out of wacky it will toss up a limit and start downclocking. So on the 2 good ones It never down clocks from max 2164mhz runing the cards 1 at a time durring testing for benches or gaming for an hour or more. Tempts max would be 59c max fans. Runing the 2 together is another issue. Max in sli stable seems to only be around 2114mhz. That's why I'm going to be putting water blocks on them (would be today but the post office decided not to put my package on a truck even though it's been there since 8am! :/ ). Also one card will run 2200+ for 2-3 mins in firestrike and the other can complete a firestrike bench at 2190.. numbers off rhe top of my head as I'm not sitting in front of the pc with my notes. MEmory too high will limit your core clock. One card will run problem free with 12k mem and the other don't seem to like 5500mhz "11k". So it's all a crap shoot what you get in the end. It don't look like evga is binning any cards over the stated clocks.

EVGA claims this is a small issue, but 33 pages and near silence from EVGA says something very different. I suspect this issue is much larger and EVGA wants to avoid costs. That's fair as it may only occur on some set-ups, but numerous defective RMA cards is entirely unacceptable. I called and was offered an RMA (although no issue with my card - yet - I feel it's a time bomb in my PC case). I can't return the card as it's too late, so what do members do? EVGA: Why, given the very mediocre way you've handled this so far, have you not offered to use the step-up for a Classified card? I'd happily pay the difference just to have a card that should work and doesn't feel like I'm waiting for it to fail.

Avisari From what I've read the customer support has been very good in this issue. It's the lack of information that people have been complaining about, and generally speaking well of the support.
Oh, absolutely. We deserve to know more than just "it's a hardware problem," but I won't hold my breath. The lack of transparency doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

another one bites the dust... first time the BS + 100% fans happened to me was last Friday (ordered from amazon on 30 august) after 15 min of SWBF. opened the support ticket the same day and got this reply from EVGA EU: "We apologize for the problem you are experiencing with the card and we would of course like to offer you a RMA as well as a Pick-Up for the card. Please let us know when you would like us to create the Pick-Up after you have created the RMA request. The Pick-Up is usually carried out on the next business day after it has been created. (...) Important: Please note that you have to send your item without accessories and in factory condition. Also, please do not use the original Box for shipping if you would like to keep it." This is a pain in the neck but if everything goes as planned and mentioned above, i can only praise EVGA for their excellent costumer service. Now waiting for the RMA to be approved. I just hope they do not send a refurbish / re-certified card, but a NEW card and that the issue is fixed.

Another quick update that might help others in this thread. I have been running with my new GB 1080 xtreme over the weekend and have yet to reproduce the problem - I have played 8+ hours of Elite Dangerous, 20+ hours of benchmarks/stress tests, and various other games mostly in VR w/VIVE. So if you have the black screen/fans issue with your FTW I suggest not waiting on the fences for some magic 'driver update' - it's likely not coming, *DEMAND* a replacement card immediately. It does not matter how long you have had the card at this point - EVGA are aware of the problem and admit it is hardware related, therefore you have the right to demand a brand new card (not re-certified) because you were *knowingly* sold a defective product.

It's settled, gonna take the leap and get the Classified I'm done waiting. I was gonna go with the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X, but I really want to extend my warranty seeing as it is a very expensive card. So I'm still sticking with EVGA. Gonna look good in my Be Quiet Dark Base Pro 900 black case

I am quite sure it is confined to a relatively small number of cards, but we don't know how many that actually is or how many 'batches' the problem is known to occur on. Make sure to test the software that is known to cause the problem - I was able to run most benchmarks and games for hours without a problem, but Elite Dangerous would crash within 20 minutes of normal play and within 5 minutes if I 'tried' to make it crash. I have not checked WOW myself but I understand that is another trigger, and also the Witcher 3 which I also did not try.

Ugh I'm happy and sad to find this thread. My 1080 FTW has been doing the exact same thing and I'm glad its not just me. I'm in Canada so I can only imagine what fun I'm going to have RMA'ing this damn card. Oh well email sent to support. Or is it better to just create an RMA? I would think you would want them to be aware so they just don't send you the same faulty crap.

They are aware. That's why people are speaking well of their support (specially in this issue).

Yeah they already replied which was good and I'm making sure they send a new one or at least one that has been tested for that screen/fan issue. Fingers crossed!

Last friday I picked up a MSI gtx 1080 gaming X. I have been testing the entire weekend, including playing The Witcher 3, Rainbow 6: Siege and lots of Battlefield 4 - not a single problem. Unfortunately it 'only' overclocks to about 2000mhz steady ingame, but when I first start the game when the card is 'cold' I see boost frequencies of 2084mhz. I think I will buy an EK block for it and watercool the card to maintain high clocks. It just feels so much better to enjoy my new card, then to nerviously wait for it to crash. No regrets.

i've had my card for about a month now. suddenly i'm getting the no monitor signal after game-crash, and fan speed ramping to 100+% requiring a power recycle. confirmed it was my gtx 1080 ftw edition card by installing a backup gpu. could there be a link with enabling dsr factor via nvidia drivers? how many people experiencing this have enabled dsr factor? anywho, armed with this thread and the response from evga directly, i'm returning my card to microcenter for a replacement. once i do this, i'll post back with my results.

Any idea how long does it take from the time they receive the card until they send out the new card? They received mine last Friday base on the courier tracking but the RMA status only got updated today.
