Re: G-Sync active on desktop workaround. 2018/02/06 01:28:57 (permalink)
Found another workaround.

Here is what you have to do to get it to work...

Tools needed: http://www.mediafire.com/file/1j4ay19bu256x7r/G-Sync.rar (Place the nvidia inspector folder into your c:\program files (x86) folder, and place the rdd folder onto your desktop.)

Now...

#1 Open the nvidia control panel, go to the set up g-sync menu, and make sure g-sync is enabled for full screen mode.
#2 Restart your pc.
#3 Open the nvidia control panel, go to the set up g-sync menu, and uncheck "enable g-sync" to disable g-sync. Leave the nvidia control panel open.
#4 Restart the nvidia display driver by using the rdd.exe inside the rdd folder on your desktop. Simply double click the .exe to reset the display driver.
#5 Re-enable g-sync by check marking "enable g-sync" inside the set up g-sync menu. Now start moving your mouse around all over the screen. If your monitor has a g-sync led indicator like mine (pg278q) you'll see that g-sync enables for a split second (led indicator turns red) then it turns off (led indicators turns white).
#6 You're all set. Opening applications that use g-sync will work as normal with g-sync enabling like it should and disabling like it should (sorta see note below) when going back to the desktop when closing applications that use g-sync. No more enabling and disabling it inside the nvcp.

Note: When exiting applications that were running g-sync simply click on the start menu, start another application that doesn't use g-sync (like your web browser), or simply refresh the desktop by right clicking on the desktop and selecting refresh to speed up the g-sync disabling process as sometimes it doesn't want to automatically disable itself. If you restart your computer you'll need to redo the above steps to get it working properly again.

Thanks Sajin.

Where did you find or figure this out? Is it a more recent known fix?

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up again in such a long time. It wasn't until I disabled G-Sync recently that I realised that I hadn't seen the white led on my monitor for so long. That made me decide to find out what was going on. Is there any official word from Nvidia on this?

Will try it out when I am back at the PC.

@bcavnaugh

The thing you were doing with the 3d driver and G-Sync, running that command etc, what were you trying to accomplish with that?

I take it that we're all on the same page now in that we want G-Sync to turn off on the desktop where as it would "normally" (Nvidia) stay on... :)

EVGA has issues with Images so I had to remove it and add it back.

No problem. I just figured it out last night. I went investigating last night.

Hmmmm.
I have an Acer XB270HU monitor.
I can either set it to Gsync mode, or ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur = its how monitors were done before gsync came out) via the monitors buttons (OSD?).
I set the monitor via monitor controls to ULMB.
I STILL have to disable Gsync every time I install a driver.
Is there any way to see if this is what has been plaguing my desktop and gameplay since the 1000 series drivers came out?
I shouldnt even have the option for gsync since its Off via the monitor itself.
Thanks.

Edit:
I still have older drivers, that has the Gsync option, but I am wondering if this has been an issue for longer than what people have seen with the latest drivers.

The option will still show up even if you have it disabled via osd.

bcavnaugh
It would be so simple if this was still in the NVIDIA Control Panel

The setup g-sync menu is still there for me on driver 390.77.

Yes, this is really weird to have the drivers see that gsync is there at all, AND it sets gsync to ON!, since the monitor should disable it when the osd setting is set to ULMB (I would think, anyway. maybe they are using some sort of hybrid gsync for ulmb mode).
I was just wondering how I can be sure that gsync really is off during gaming and/or on the desktop? Just because the driver shows it as off doesnt mean it really is (hence, OP), heh.

If you turn if off in both places I'm sure it's off. Don't think it's possible to check and see if it's disabled in game unless your monitor has a led status indicator that changes color depending on if g-sync is off or on.

Enable the G-Sync indicator in NV control, it will pop up on screen in game saying G-Sync is on... go to set up gsync page then the display drop down menu in menu bar.

Re: G-Sync active on desktop workaround. 2018/02/06 21:18:39 (permalink)
It is grayed out when you have Gsync 'Off'.
Even when you turn it on, then check it, then turn off gsync, it unchecks itself.
I was thinking there might be an app or something else that might check, but I guess not, as thats probably a registry item, and anything would just check that reg item and return its value, so not worth it.

I do know that even though I have the monitor set to ULMB and trftresh rate 120hz CAPPED (the highest ULMB will go), some games seem to ignore that and go 144 fps CAPPED anyway (its a 144hz monitor, but again with ulmb its capped at 120hz).

I wonder if there is a firmware update for this monitor.
The GTX780 didnt do that, but the Titan X  does. Its like it ignores the monitor settings, and sets its internal something to see and display a 144hz monitor, totally ignoring nvidia driver and monitor. Or maybe the games detect somehow the 144hz monitor? Weird either way though...

Edit:
Nope.
No firmware for at home users.
There is one, but even the service centers wont install it. What you get is what you get.

I wish the indicator had a timeout. I'd like to know when gsync turns on, but the indicator could go away after 5-10 seconds after opening a game.

I was thinking, even if G-Sync is enabled on the desktop is it really going to be doing anything on a static desktop? Maybe it just sits there doing nothing.. What makes you think it being active on the desktop will shorten it's lifespan?

Having gsync enabled isn't going to break the hardware. Having gsync enabled on the desktop is immensely helpful because you can easily see tearing without it due to being able to render windows at a very high framerate. Just scrolling in a web browser can produce severe screen tearing for example. Been using gsync on the desktop since I got a display with the feature. No issues.

Don't know if it will or not, but it use to be off on the desktop all the time before nvidia changed things. Will it actually decrease the lifespan maybe, but then again maybe not.

Most G-Sync monitors are high refresh rate. I was of the understanding that the high refresh rate provided the desktop fluidity and smoothness. I did not think that something like the browser could cause frame fluctuations on the desktop.

As long as you turn off browser hardware acceleration (in ALL browsers), and desktop acceleration/apps/windows component, you should not see any tearing. Its windows that started this with web desktop integration and windows aero >

Hahaha
I 'think' it is enabled, even though I turned off Gsync, and it unchecked the gsync indicator.
When I launch a game in full screen now,  it JUST started today (only some games do it, I dont know why others dont do it), it displays 'NORMAL' in the upper rightish corner.
I never had that happen before.
It HAS to be that gsync indicator.
So, 'some' part of it is still working, even though its turned off in both the monitor and the setting.
LOL
Nvidia just is starting to get lazy lazy lazy.
No competition = who cares what happens? Who are you going to use instead of nvidia?

According to nvidia 390.77 doesn't cause g-sync to be active on the desktop. Can you confirm that? I'm not using driver 390.77 atm.

I installed 390.77 last week and I still have a red power led on the desktop. I wonder if the Nvidia control panel needs to be configured in a particular way? Did they have anything else to add?

Hopefully someone else with 390.77 can confirm?

No change for me that I can tell. If I disable G-Sync my led goes white but as soon as I re-enable my power led goes red.

Have you tried setting the indicator in the osd to off, the starting the computer, turn off gsync indicator, shut down comp + monitor, enable the indicator in osd, then turn comp on?
Like I said, it took my computer like 4-5 times turn9ing it on and off before I even got the indicator.
Even when I disabled gsync, the 'Normal' was showing up in games, even though gsunc was turned off. BUT, that didnt start until maybe the 5th time I used my computer, so it seems to get stuck, or not tuen on, or not turn off, and then all of a sudden starts working fine.
Its weird.
