Hey you guys EVGA out there

Could you make another Bios for silent freaks?
The free OC Update is great, but now, with the fan running always at 40% in idle sucks a bit.
Ok, it's still not loud, but it could also run easily at 30% in idle!
The temperatures shouldn't be the problem at all.
Before the update my temps were about 33°C, now 30°C.

So, i beg you to do another bios, because it shouldnt take you so long

+999999999999999...

I started a thread several days ago asking about this. The fan on my GTX 460 (the lowliest model) has an intolerable whine at 40%, and I have to use Precision to bump it up to 41-42% to eliminate it. Decreasing it to 38% would probably work, too, and I expect I could safely go a lot lower for 95% of the time I use my PC, which is for business and HTPC purposes. For the 5% gaming purposes, manually controlling the fan speed in Precision is not adequate, because it kills the fan's ability to increase speed as the card works harder. So for my gamer installation of Windows, I have to leave it on Auto and endure the fan whining at 40% when not actually gaming. Maybe I just need to return to fanless cards for a few more years and forget about the PC for gaming. Again. :(

Applied the update to my GTX 460 1GB EE SC.  Very nice temp drop at load with the higher allowable fanspeed:

Original Auto

Original Max - 80%

FPB Max - 100%

Sounds like you need to use MSI Afterburner and not EVGA Precision, you can set your custom fan speeds based on what temp it reaches on an adjustable graph, even setting 42% works to remove the whine you hear, and it will speed up as it gets hotter.

No faffing about with unreliable 2d/3d profiles or profile keyboard shortcuts is needed. Besides, the average human never remembers to activate them anyway ;)

Thanks for the tip. I just tried the MSI software, and it indeed works with the EVGA card and has the custom fan curve the EVGA software lacks. This is a really good feature because so many variable-speed fans have ranges where they sound like crap.

Unfortunately, while Afterburner lets me set the speed lower than 40%, the card doesn't honor it. I guess a BIOS update would be necessary for this?

Is it OK to perform this update with SLI'd cards, or do I need to do it to one card at a time?

The fan is quite loud at 100%!  I can see why they didnt have it turned on from the factory..prolly didnt want to scare people or something.

I've been really, really, happy with my 460 so far...as soon as I buy a new motherboard and cpu..I think I'm going to get a 2nd one. :)

Hilbert's jab shot at Guru kinda miffed me

Didnt Expect this kind of garbage commentary from him

Greetings, Same exact thing happened to me. I restarted the computer and Windows 7 installed the drivers and they were the most up to date and now all is well. I did not see any higher clocks though in MSI afterburner.

Does this update allow for lower than 40% at the low end?  Quite frankly on the Vanilla 1 gig model it is WAY WAY louder than the 5770 it replaced and the temps are good so not sure why EVGA would care if I want the fan to be at 25% to make it silent at idle.  Stupid on the vanilla with no overclock, just saying way to aggressive for the 2D fan speed.

Nevermind answered my own question.  It DOES NOT WORK at lower than 40%.  Absolute crap!  This thing is really loud to me.  Do I have a dud or something?  I mean it is easily the loudest part in my entire system.  Is this because of the turbine?  Newegg may be getting this back really soon.  The thing is not breaking 35C at idle and it is overclocked to SC specks.  I can't believe I got hosed by EVGA's rush job on this particular model.  I know should have been wiser cause reviews complained it was kinda loud, but I thought "no way" EVGA always makes things better than that!

Hey uhh, will this benefit someone who has already overclocked their 460 higher than 720, and who keeps their fan speed below 55%, at all whatsoever? Like in terms of speed and performance (temps and noise)

Here it is, the EVGA 460 FPB Update, changelist as follows:
  • Core/Processor clock increased to 720/1440 (Part numbers 768-P3-1360-XX and 01G-P3-1371-XX Only)
  • Fanspeed unlocked to allow up to 100%

Installation
  • Download the correct .zip file below for your graphics card:
768-P3-1360-XX - EVGA GeForce GTX 460
768-P3-1362-XX - EVGA GeForce GTX 460 SuperClocked
01G-P3-1371-XX - EVGA GeForce GTX 460 1024MB EE (External Exhaust)
01G-P3-1373-XX - EVGA GeForce GTX 460 SuperClocked 1024MB EE (External Exhaust)

  • Extract the files to a location on disk.
  • Make sure no programs are running in the background, and double click update.exe.
  • Press "Y" to begin the update.
  • DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR RESET DURING THE FLASH PROCESS!
  • After update, restart PC.
  • Reinstall the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers after bootup.

I want to know if the warranty will be valid if something go wrong with the bios flash of the video card ?

Actually, I had an MSI 460 which i flashed a custom bios to unlock the voltage, and I only got ~20mhz increase going from 1.087v to 1.2v(910>930). All it did was make it run hotter.
So because of that I am just leaving my evga one at stock voltage cap of 1.087, I am stable at 890mhz, but it is hot and loud..
I am in the Final Fantasy XIV beta, and with auto-fan I get ~95c temps on my 460 1b SC EE. I'll be using their step-up program as soon as I can for a 475. Even if the 475s don't come out, I'll either step-up to a 470 or sell it at end of 90day period.
Evga really could have done better on the design of the cooler. These cards don't run hot in the first place, no need to blow air out of the case. My MSI would hit 64c and be barely audible where the evga one hits 90c on the same test and sounds like a 747 taking off.

why can't you go to guru3d and get NiBiTor and nvflash and then just make your own edits to the bin file and flash it???

Why so serious?
