The hassle factor is high. Why? Because...

EVGA would have to moderate that forum similar to the Marketplace. Some people already complain about sensitivity issues. Although since rj posts the majority of the posts there, it might not be too bad. Members would always have to read a sticky on how to properly post in that area though.

Most of the news stories (articles) are posted in Computer Industry News and  Gaming & Gaming News section. Once in awhile members will post a news story in General discussion section. We don't have that many members that posts News stories (articles).

I don't think it would be a burden on members. It doesn't stop anyone from posting a news stories.

You open a news article posted in the Computer Industry News section, all you see is a URL, does that make you want to take part in the discussion. You see 5-6 articles posted like that daily, it makes members give up on that section.

I watch that section more than I used to now lol, I guess each to their own.

Let's say evga agreed and added the following requirement (quote the essential paragraph of the story) when making a News topic in Computer Industry News or Gaming and Gaming News sections only. Do you think that would make members post less news stories. It sure hasn't kept OCN members from posting, every news story posted on it's forums, you see 5+ page of replies from members.

What could it hurt to try something like that to see if it improves member activity or not. As it is now, we only have a few members that bother to post news stories. Some already quote part of the story.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but wasn't this exact question discussed only a couple of months ago, and it was decided by the powers that be to let it continue as is?

It will take others wanting this to happen before evga will bother to listen.  Last time they used the excuse "were afraid members might not post if we add guideline like that".

IF anyone thinks this is a good idea, send email to webmaster@evga.com  maybe they will act.

Not that my opinion matters, but i feel the ads actually lure people away (you all know what i speak of, I shouldn't have to point it out), we get enough of it on a daily lives. There is a huge difference between a "buy me now" thread and a "news" thread. I sure would like to hear people's arguments on this one. I understand we're talking about 2 different things, but the ads section tends to get overwhelming. Just wanting to point out I did call it an "ad section" when i was refering to Computer Industry News, but that is what it's starting to be, "The EVGA ad's magazine"; they should start charging companies for displaying such ads on the computer industry news.

News and Ads, not the same thing.

Tech power should pay EVGA money for traffic because thats what all the links are in the computer industry section.

I only go to the industry news section about once a week now - where it used to be daily.  As others have said it's just a link to a TPU page... and even the TPU pages are crap half the time and I have to go and Google more information on my own if I'm interested.  I've also noticed a forum decline in general as well.  I only tend to visit forums to kill time at work - and there's just not much going on here especially compared to [H], OCN, and Anand forums.  I'm not sure exactly WHY but I do notice that here sometimes I think I'm in elementary school whereas other places I feel like I'm at the bar after work.  I'm sure that feeling isn't unique to me.

Awesome. I just got a formal warning and threat of a ban for linking to a page that contained sexually explicit content - except it didn't. What it did contain was some ads (which my adblocker blocked so I didn't even know they were there) which themselves weren't against ToS, but the sites they linked to probably were.. apparently. I didn't look any further because I thought that was just stupid, but there ya go. The post itself was deleted about 1 minute after it was made (seriously), yet I didn't get the warning until about 24 hours later.. that's weird. Sorry but it's getting too much like walking on eggshells around here, this particular 'infringement' was not intentional, but my apologies fell on deaf ears, so screw it, it's got me considering ASUS for the Z270 platform instead of EVGA since we seem to be losing so many valuable contributors on these forums, and that kind of peer support is very important.. something EVGA seems to be losing sight of unfortunately.

Sometimes the Ads shown on websites are based off a person search history (when you don't delete cache or cookies). Ads seen by each person can be different (depends on the website).  I always have my Adblock (UBlock origin) enabled too. I have Disconnect addon enabled on evga site to prevent them selling out my privacy to facebook. Allowing Facebook to track each webpage or forums topic you open is an invasion of privacy.

+1 and very true. Just because it shows "certain ads" for one person (in this case adultery) doesn't mean that it will be the same for the other person. Sounds like this Moderator has been watching too much porn, naughty - naughty - naughty... Who was the one that sent you the warning? Lolololol.

Forums in general seem to be declining.
Even the egg seems to have all but died.
Like others have said too many bad apples.  :(

I see overclock.net forums is still active. Maybe that's due to people in charge of it putting effort into it, they also have better guidelines to help spark discussion on news articles posted. That is something evga refuses to do here.

You open a news article posted in the Computer Industry News section, all you see is a URL, does that make you want to take part in the discussion. You see 5-6 articles posted like that daily, it makes members give up on that section.

i used to lurk that forum but I do not believe I had an account there.
I was on Bjorn3d, elitebastards, tech something, Toms, rage3d and the nvidia counterpart.  I enjoyed seeing my online friends at different locations.  Then I joined eggexpert when it first started and became a mod and was very active on animeamaze forums
The egg pulled a lot of my time and I slowly tapered off the other forums and now days I am mostly a lurker haunting forums for info rather than interaction.

Back then I would have 2 or 3 PC projects running  same time and was buying multiple video cards a year for reviews and testing.  Was fun but not good on the bank account and over the years I started having more fun playing games and messing with my rig.  I still mess around, careful there, but as long as my games play at max I do not upgrade.  ^_^

draconoth, at the search bar at the top, you can type: virtual reality

And results will pop up. I've read through about 10 pages - some include driver thread features though some include compatibility issues with Asmedia USB ports with latency with the X79 Dark.

You may also want to be more specific with your search terms but not too specific but not too general either.

Personally? I don't really feel that comfortable posting anymore. Mods have gotten very strict and it feels more like a daycare for sensitive adults than a place I can have an honest interaction with another person.

If EVGA wants a club penguin, that's their prerogative I guess, but that's why I've gone elsewhere. All the love to RJ and others though. Just doing their jobs.

+1
Plus wrinvert passed away, so this place reminds me of him way too much to be posting without him here.

I tend to come and go from the forums, be real active for a bit, then lurk a bit, then come to the forums only every once in awhile.
The thing about posting a link to a site that can have ads you never saw that could be inappropriate for this forum does make me a bit paranoid though, have to double check now anything I want to link too to see if an ad generator is able to spit out inappropriate ads. (makes me wonder if something like google ads that is used everywhere and has ads for everything could be handled.)

I have not posted in 4 months, and probably won't post after this... But...

I left this forum (have browsed a couple times since I left, but not much) because I'm sick of the mods. They are all power hungry little children who flex their E-Muscles way, way to much. I'm not the only one who noticed. The MODS killed this forum, not people leaving because of 'boredom' or 'lack of interest'. They let some people get away with everything, but pick on others for the smallest crap. I got tired of it, so I left. It's quite sad really, but it is what it is, I guess.

-16GB RAM.
-GTX 1070.

-1X 1TB 7200 spinny drive.

Re: Forum activity dropping? 2017/01/22 07:27:55 (permalink)
I just wanted to personally say thank you for all the feedback I have been reading in this thread. Some food for thought that is 100% my own and is not reflective of any other member/moderator/EVGA staff member...

  • EVGA created the TOS. We all agreed to follow it in order to post here. It is kind of like getting a license and getting away with speeding for a few years. Then one day you get pulled over and you now hate cops because you got caught. Or have a list of excuses on why "That time" they should not have ticketed you. Completely ignoring the many other times you deserved a ticket.
  • Bundling Mods into one clump as a bad group is not totally accurate.
    • Mods are people too. They struggle at times with what is the best approach just like anyone does.
    • Not every Mod agrees with another Mods opinion. I can tell you that I am in the minority often enough that I have learned a lot on other individuals views. If anything, I am forever grateful for the opportunity I have had all these years to moderate. I have learned a lot about how people "Really" think vs. how people "Act" on the forums. You would be SHOCKED on how different members act behind the scenes when working with a moderator or EVGA vs. what they say on the forum.
    • Every moderator has room for improvement. Any moderator that does not feel they do, in my personal opinion, will find they do sooner rather than later.
    • Moderators have a huge responsibility with helping folks follow the TOS. They will forever be enemies of those that want to not follow the TOS as they agreed to when signing up. Making noise about how bad the entire group is, is just noise. If there is truly an issue with any "Individual" that is also a Moderator, tell EVGA about it. This kind of falls back to the "Everyone has room for improvement".  If EVGA feels the Moderator was accurate, then the member might want to reconsider the issue at hand.
      • I think the majority of the members have great intentions and from time to time have little blips.
      • Same goes for the Mods.
    • Many of us as "People" are helping others with Folding and Crunching. It does not matter what the title under our forum name says about us. To me, helping others is what says volumes about who we truly are in real life.
    • If anyone thinks for a minute, that many moderators here do not send PM's/emails or speak to folks on the phone to help them/show ways to better understand the TOS and or get feedback about the TOS before taking any serious action, you are mistaken. Many of us spend a significant amount of time trying to help. We DO NOT want to police. We want to guide/assist/help. The problem can be from time to time that...
      • To much energy has been spent to try and help, now we have to act.
      • A Mod reacts to fast.
      • The member is truly not willing to do as they agreed to.
  • For me the reduction in activity on our forums is more about how technology has continued to evolve than anything.
    • Computers are much cheaper to buy now than to build on our own compared to five or even ten yeas ago. Less and less folks are building than there used to be. Heck, I have built over 20 machines, and in the last two years... Not one! It is to cheap to order a decent laptop and snap it into a docking station  or buy a desktop to power three monitors in the workplace. Vs. building a machine to do the same end result function.
    • Software has made a lot of the challenges we once had a thing of the past.
    • Companies evolve. EVGA is no different.
    • The "Cloud" has truly changed the workplace environment.
      • With my company, not one HDD is storing anything more than the software to run the computer. We all have multiple level encryption/log ins and when we are outside any of our primary business locations, we all VPN to our cloud. Heck, we can log in on smart phones, tablets, you name it and get anything we need in real time.
      • We no longer need an entire floor dedicated to servers and 25 IT folks. We are down to a "Room" with every transaction in it, with multiple fail-safes and six IT professionals.
      • "Many" computers are just slave units to do the activity. They no longer need to be "Machines" they once did.

My point to all of this. I think we are just all along for the ride called "Evolution". I for one have nothing but good intentions for all of you, myself and EVGA. If I have offended anyone, my apologies that is not my intention. I am just offering a different view and in no way challenging anyone else's view.

i personally take breaks from forums due to life things and work, but it would be nice to see the market place liven up some.

This place could be much better if those in charge of it would put more effort into it. All we can do as normal members is give our suggestions, the rest is up to evga.

What use to make this place fun and entertaining for a lot of us, has been taken out back and shot. We try to kid around with each other, only to have select moderators overact at times. We make a comment a moderator doesn't like, we have a good chance of being singled out or followed around in hopes they find something we did wrong so they can yell/threaten us with.

I will admit that i'm not perfect by any means. I sometimes let things get to me that i shouldn't and overreact sometimes. I usually speak my mind about things as you guys on here probably already know.

you aint kidding, in the few weeks ive been back on here its just not the same, people are quick to get snippy or give wacked opinion instead of helping. used to be the techs would chime in more and try to help (which some do still do) but not like before. oh well, every king shall fall i guess.
