seedless strawberry The reason these cards are going to be limited release is probably because they can throw the gk110 chips in a tesla card and sell it for $3000+ or it could be thy know only a hand few would buy it so why make a while bunch of them

More exact details are popping out: http://wccftech.com/nvidi...a-lifts-18th-february/ Core Clock of 837MHz. Boost Clock of 875MHz. SP FLOPS = 4.5TFLOPS. DP FLOPS = 1.3TFLOPS. If that double precision performance really isn't limited, then nVidia is basically handing out overclocked Tesla K20X cards.

And do you really think Nvidia would be dumb enough to do that when they can charge $3,000+ for a Tesla They would have to sell at at least 3 to make up for the lose of one Tesla

Not surprisingly, most enthusiasts avoid business perspective, they can't imagine what could be beneficial to nVidia even at our expense. If GK110 yields got better, it would make sense they continue to sell them as Teslas since AMD isn't really threatening their GTX600's on the consumer graphics front. Their earnings report pretty much proves that. Furthermore, for me it makes more sense to think that Titan's GK110's didn't meet nVidia's quality mark for Tesla K20X and have been collecting since last year when Tesla K20/K20X debuted-- up until nVidia decided to feed them to us now. But if there were leakage or voltage issues, I do wonder if these have much overclocking headroom or even last anywhere near as long as Tesla K20X's warranty would honor-- which could be the biggest "gotcha" in all this.

why should we assume its at a loss for nvidia? As far as Tesla, do we even know how many k20x cards have been sold since its arrival? My point is maybe they arent selling as much. I would imagine the market for a Tesla card is no ways near the volume a geforce card would demand. Maybe the sales are slow and they have enough GPU's sitting around to warrant throwing them into a niche Geforce card. So selling these chips that would have never sold as a Tesla instead as a high end GeForce card even for $1000 could bea smart business move. If you get a lemon, make lemonade.

Maybe the sales are slow and they have enough GPU's sitting around to warrant throwing them into a niche Geforce card. nVidia didn't create GK110 for us, they did for super-computing. We know of the namesake customer of the Titan supercomputer which has 18,688 K20X's, valued at $65 million. One must look up all nVidia supercomputing clients to get an idea of how many has been sold, but short of purchasing annual reports from independent market research firms, that data is hard to find especially since enthusiast sites won't report that. But I found one, this article by seekingalpha examines nVidia's portfolio and how much each segment is represented; you're right Tesla is smaller than GeForce, but the money is in professional, not consumer.

Price is not made just from costs, also from how much customers can be asked to pay, demand and price levels in specific niche. Nvidia charges for professional cards much much more then they actually cost to make (for how much generations there have been quadro cards almost same as gaming counterparts with main differences being - driver optimisation, sometimes slight declock and different cooling and biggest difference: price? IIRC there have been even driver soft-quadro hacks with very slight differences in performance). Thus imho it's not as if Titan will be sold at loss. It will be sold with less profit margin then Tesla :)

Awesome find Lephron. I know its a business, but alot of people jump to conclusions when in fact none of us really know. They have their reasons and thats that lol Come Monday we will find out. However, like you said, is it worth it? Can it be OC? If so is a waterbock worth it? Lots of questions. I am actually surprised this card appears to be real...

Of course they had to milk that 680 imposter as long as possible. When amd has no competitive cpus, intel slows down advancement. Same for ati's gpu-s and nvidia. Where is need to release something more expensive, if cheaper one still outperforms competitor? Even though i buy mostly intel & nvidia, i hope amd/ati will stay afloat forever. We, as customers, will win from that. Any advancement will crawl as snail and prices will skyrocket with one king left on top of hill.
