https://www.techpowerup.com/262881/microsofts-windows-7-reaches-end-of-life Today, on January the 14th, Microsoft is officially ending support for Windows 7 operating system. After more than 10 years since its launch, Windows 7 has remained a primary operating system on many PCs, especially OEM PCs manufactured before 2015, when Windows 10 came out. The user transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10 has not been an easy task for Microsoft, however, by declaring that the product has reached End-Of-Life, Microsoft is trying to make millions of users pull the trigger and embrace the new operating system. When January 14th arrives, Microsoft will stop giving Windows 7 users technical support, software updates with new features, and most importantly security updates. The official recommendation from Microsoft is to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, meaning Windows 10. As some of the older PCs may have compatibility issues with newer OS, it is also recommended to check your PC specifications. If you are a customer of the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, you will continue to see further support in the future, however, for regular users, the support period is over. Farewell Windows 7 you were a great operating system.

Time to replace for most end users - until then Keep your Security software & applications up to date & behind a firewall - but you should have been doing that anyways

It is a sad day. Windows 7 was as important to Microsoft as DOS was back in the day. Hopefully 10 can have a longer life, than the 10 years of 7, before it becomes obsolete.

Truly one of the best OS's of the last decade. But for me Windows 7 died when the currency exchange gadget stopped updating around 2014 or so, IIRC. I always had it on my desktop, along with the weather gadget, but when the exchange rates stopped updating, there was no point for it to stay on the desktop. Windows 8.1 was mature enough at the moment with proper 3rd party start menu alternatives available, so I upgraded to Windows 8.1. I skipped Windows 8 entirely.

Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 7 are the best OS hands down. I think Win 7 was the best polished one out of those 3.

I have several versions of Windows in virtual machines, this way I can make screenshots etc Having lots of large hard disks is helpful for large numbers of virtual disks which can be large files

I haven't used Windows 7 in any of my PCs since Windows 10 launched. Some of you really need to learn to let go. Yeah Win 7 was great and all but it's dead, time to move on. None of you are major corporations with infrastructure built on Win 7 where deploying a new OS would be a technical headache.

One of the reasons Redmond changed the way windows will be delivered now is so the new embedded systems will remain secure etc. ATM machines have been replaced recently with new ones that do not need envelopes and this was a service improvement in addition to phasing out XP in old machines.
