I just got this in and was testing it. In ECO mode the fan sounds like a hairdryer. To top it off it stays blowing wide-open for 5 minutes plus at a time. If I switch it from ECO to normal it will still do the high RPM fan spinning. But this is off and on depending on what I'm doing. I will give you an example of how loud this "EVGA H1282412HA (12V, 0.35A, 2170 RPM, Hydro Dynamic Bearing" fan is. With my GPU fans at 100%, this PSU fan will drown them out with no problems.

I don't mind a little noise. When it drowns out my whole PC and I can hear it through my sealed headphones while gaming. It is so loud my teammates will ask what is that spinning in the background while we game. We need a fan curve adjustment or so way to tone this fan down. This is unreal how loud this is. Is this normal for this power supply? Do I need to find a replacement that isn't aggressive for a quiet build PC?

Hi KILLER_K and welcome to the EVGA forums!

It sounds like either a defective fan or an issue with the eco mode switch and either issue would warrant a replacement. Be sure to register the unit so we can assist with an RMA.

I was trying to see if any other person had any issues. Was the fan loud to them and or did it max RPM for them at random times. As a 2,170 RPM fan can't be too silent.

From information I gathered earlier, it does seem to be normal for the fan on this unit to be loud as in it can be heard pushing air from a considerable distance.

Are they going to add a way to change the fan curve? I mean, after all, this would solve 99% of the issues with the loud fan spinning at max. Add a potentiometer at the very least.

I will do some more digging on the issue at hand.  I'm certain that I'm not alone this loud issue.

I have the 1000w g3 and it’s the loudest psu I have had in a long time and my first EVGA psu I have brought (which I now regret buying). only month old and now replacing with a different brand, waste of money. Shame I can’t return it. Soon as the fan starts it’s loud, really bad fan curve.

Thank you kiwicanuck for your information on the loud power supply. Mine has been sent back to EVGA. They said they will test it when it arrives to see if it has issues causing the loud fan. From what I have seen it is an oversight on their part on the aggressive fan curve they used. This was my first EVGA power supply as well. Loved the small 5.9-inch length profile it had.

What did you replace yours with? I have to find a replacement now as well. EVGA please fix the aggressive loud fan control you are using on these G3 units.

Going back to Corsair, had the original HX1000 for 8yrs with no issues, so getting HX1000i. Shame the EVGA is so loud. I am only using around 530w of the 1000W so PSU not under much load and its a lot louder than the 35db listed in specs at 100% load. Glad you could return yours , my local store would not return the unit so ended up selling it and taken a $ loss. EVGA should recall these units or put the correct information on box specs for noise and fan speed. Not a happy customer.

All the G3 models have the aggressive fan control. Possible a G2 or G1. I'm not sure about the Titanium and Platinum models.

I have a small form factor build. That may have something to do with it. Perhaps if you have a larger case then it will stay cooler and not allow the fan to spin up crazy on it.

Try it and see if you like it. If not return it and get another model or brand. Good luck.

I have a large case with good air flow and it was still loud, I think its the due to the small foam factor of the PSU, my replacement PSU is super quiet and the fan hasn't even kicked in yet. Don't get a compact PSU if you don't have too, if you can fit a large unit then go for larger one.

Good to hear. Have you put a full load on it and looped a stress test on it? A better question is how many watts are you using loaded?

You have to put a load on it to allow it to get warm for the fan to come on. With the ECO mode on the fan will come on when the PSU reaches a warmer level to cool off or when loaded. Eco mode off the fans runs at a lower speed but when it reaches a certain 20% of loud or heat is produced it will kick the fan on louder.

You are at about 500 watts max with that setup. But as long as you are happy and no loud fans then that is all that matters. I wish mine wasn't loud but it is what it is. I appreciate the feedback on it.

Well EVGA got the power supply back on the 10th and issued me a refund. Then charged me a 15% restocking fee and I was told it would be waved as a one-time exception. I guess the exception didn't work out and I also asked about the notes from the previous person that told me that they would wave the fee. I mean no contact or email about what happened or anything. They could have asked if I wanted to get a partial refund or to try another power supply back.

I guess I just basically donated $15% to EVGA this month. No big deal but it seems too many people are not keeping to the story at EVGA. One person should stick to the RMA until it is finished. Instead of multiple people doing it. I'm highly disappointed in EVGA right now. It is what it is though.

I'd call and speak to a manager about the fee.

I have called numerous time. All I get is the runaround. They have had my PSU since the 12th and still haven't gotten my refund back. This is sad from a well-known business. If you take 15% at least give me back my refund and stop holding it. All I see if good stuff posted all in the forums. Yet I always have issues every single time I call. It is what it is though.
