Hey there,

I have just finished my new machine with an EVGA FTW K board, Core i7 6900K and Titan X pascal. I love the new machine - and all looks good except I can't get the M2 Samsung 950 Pro to work.

Everything is setup correctly in the BIOS (M2 enabled,  UEFI, no CSM... - see screenshots) but the drive is not showing up anywhere. I have now bootet with my old SATA SSD drives and Windows 10 Anniversary. It bootet up without any issues and everything is running super stable - even with a 4.3Ghz overclock - so I am pretty happy. But now I fear that there is something wrong with the M2 slot (hopefully not) or the Samsung 950 Pro SSD ?

I can't see the drive in Windows 10 - it is only showing my SATA SSDs. When using the windows installation media it also doesn't detect the drive - so regardless where I look, the drive is not showing up. I have plugged it in correctly - it is secured and in place with the little screw - BIOS is v2.01 (latest), Tried reset to default, went 1:1 like the manual is telling me on how to set a M2 SSD up etc. I am really out of ideas.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I should proceed from there - did I miss something or is there really something faulty?

Thanks in advance,
Oliver

Post an image of your Bios settings for Boot Devices and CSM, do you see the Drive in the BIOS?
Also remove any Overclocking or better yet reset the Bios back to the Defaults or Optimized Settings then set the Bios for how you want it to boot. Do Not Overclock the CPU or Memory until after you Install the OS.
Disconnect all other SSD and SATA Hard Drives as well.

Thats exactly what I did already - it was complete naked before - without the SATA, all reset to default - I have just put my settings back in now to test out the OC on my old SATA drive.

And no the drive is not visible in BIOS. I can only see SSD SATA drives there. Where should it be listed anyway?

"I can only see SSD SATA drives there" Disconnect them.
Why do you have CSM Disabled?

For Windows 10 you should disable CSM - its also written in the manual. But I tried it either way. And like mentioned before SATA were disconnected.

This is how I have my X99 Windows 10 Bios Set:

But on my X79 Dark with Titans I have to Force "Legacy Mode Only" on the GPU to see all three cards.

You should disable CSM (for Win8/10) that can speed things up, surely Ill try this too but I don't think it changes anything - because I can't even detect the drive in windows with the samsung software :/

"Where should it be listed anyway?" I am now looking on the Forum for an image of this I remember seeing under the MB Section.

Well the OS or any software will not see it if the Bios Cannot See it.

Tried it but didnt work eighter...

and well surely I agree, but I didn't found a place in the bios where the M2 Disk could show up. Lets just hope that nothing is broken... or its just the m2 card so I can replace it...
Tomorrow i will remove the graphics card again and the M2 (its behind the card) and see if that helps...

I also have CSM enabled.  Without it, my drive isn't detected.  I've seen other builds where it is vice versa.  X99 Chipset, UEFI and M.2 can act funky sometimes.  Just got to play with it unfortunately to see what it likes.

On my X99 Classified motherrboard, M.2 and PCIe NVMe drives do not show up in the Bios
(until an operating system has been installed).

This is normal for behavior for these drives.

For Samsung 950 Pro drives, it might be necessary to load a driver first, for Windows to detect it.

If I recall they are not listed under SATA Information in the Bios.
But are listed, still looking for the image that shows them on the X99

Hey there - all solved now! I just removed the M2 from the slot and reinserted it again... this time I pushed it a bit deeper into this tiny slot (I guess I was too cautious the first time) and while BIOS still doesn't show anything, the drive is now showing up in windows setup :). CSM is also disabled as it should be for Win8/10.

Thanks everyone and I am happy that nothing was faulty :) !!

Glad it all got worked out.

Edit: I once again tried disabling CSM on my X99 Classified and all hell broke loose. lol  Kept locking up on the logo screen.  Had to clear CMOS, re-enter all my BIOS settings (thank goodness I had saved images of the BIOS settings on my phone) and back to normal.  Unfortunately, I can't disable CSM and from what I've heard, CSM is the reason or at least one of the major reasons why my boots take so long.

I did but didn't realize it was from a different BIOS version.  Regardless, I saved a new copy again but always have images of it as a backup plan.  Atm, I seem to remember the OC settings by memory, luckily.

Hmm interesting... well not sure, but I have CSM disabled and all is running fine.

But regarding the boot times... I have to say that they are also pretty bad (30 seconds...). The post is already taking pretty long so I think this is a X99 problem. A friend of mine has the Z170 (EVGA board) and the boot times there are almost like 5-10seconds - same as a surface book - so maybe the chipset is to old for this new fast booting...!?
