Hey guys, I was just wondering if I should upgrade my ram. I'm currently using 4x2gb Corsair XMS3 @ 1066 9-9-9-28 but I'm not loving my performance. The FSB is set to 1600, so I'm wondering if it would be worth it to go up to 1600 DDR3 sticks. I was looking at Kingston HyperX. If I had something like that, I could run linked/synched, correct? Would I see a difference in speed and/or stability? I'm a graphic designer and I use programs like Photoshop and Illustrator every day. Thanks

Yes; if your CPU is doing fine running with a FSB of 1600MHz then, you will see a great improvement in overall system performance if you had 1600MHz RAM running Linked & Synced. The trouble you will have today is finding the higher voltage (1.7v -2.0v) modules that the 790i was designed to run on as, they are pretty much all EOL and very difficult to find. Those Kingston's that you linked are 1.65v modules and may or may not function properly for you. I worked with another member who bought a pair of these and they are working well for him at their rated spex...did not try OC'ing them: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220544

If I'm understanding this right, the RAM i posted is only tested up to 1.65v, but the 790i board requires a minimum of 1.7v to the DIMMs? So I would be risking burning out that new RAM, correct? I've been looking at upgrading my MoBo/CPU to a i5 or i7. Would the voltages on a new mobo also give me issues with the RAM? I looked for the patriot ram Zelmo posted, I can only find it on eBay and its really pricey for 8gigs.

It is possible that if you apply 1.7v to the 1.65v RAM that it may not work correctly. Alot of the new boards only require 1.5v RAM so, you need to check the board's requirements and buy appropriate RAM tested on it.

I am currently working on getting my HyperX' into 1600 range. They are CL8 rather 9 but should not be too much of a difference. If you want to follow along on my adventures: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=1124896

I just installed the memory in my sig, and I'm running it at 1.65v with the timings set to recommended settings for now (9-11-9-27). Got it on Newegg for $114.99, http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820220535 Just passed Memtest86+ v4.2 for 75 min. So far working much better than the old OCZ Reapers (OCZ3RPR18004GK). I had the OCZ for a long time and just recently started testing the OC limit on my system only to find out the OCZ would run at 1600 without errors on memtest and I tried a lot of settings, and no way would they run stable at 1800. They gave the impression you could OC them by pushing the volts to 1.95 and I played around with the timings and its either the RAM or the board just doesn't like them. So far the patriot is 82 min with no errors. I'm going to kick it up to 1700 FSB and test it for awhile.

Would it be possible to improve my performance/stability by just changing settings using my current hardware? Could I bring my FSB down to 1333, and bring the RAM up to 1333, then run linked/synched? I'm currently only running my RAM voltages at 1.65v. Should I take it all the way to 1.7?

Try leaving your fsb alone for now and bringing your ram up to rated specs (9-9-9-24 @ 1333 @ 1.65v)

Ok, I just tried 9-9-9-24 @1333 and I got past POST, but windows wouldn't load. Tried 9-9-9-28 and got the same result. Dropped it back down to 9-9-9-28 @1066 and it worked fine. Still slow though. I'm finding that a lot of my issues actually come from Illustrator itself, because Photoshop can use all 8gb of ram, but Illustrator won't use more than 2.5. I might just wait until I can get a new mobo/cpu. I might as well upgrade the memory at the same time.

One more question. The RAM that JeffreyHam posted ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220544) Could I use 4 of those to get a total of 16gb of ram? I saw that another user (using an XFX 790i) got his system to boot with 16gb. That would be really good for me when I'm working with these enormous files...

First off.....the EVGA and the XFX 790i Ultra's are the same exact Nvidia reference boards....the only differences are the logo stickers applied to them and the OEM BIOS's. XFX never put out a P10 BIOS version update where EVGA did. The boards were designed to address up to 8GB's of RAM but, others are reporting they are having success running more: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=837038 I can not personally confirm nor disprove these claims as, I have never tried it myself. Whether you could run 4 stix of that RAM I linked or not is still not known...you would just have to try and find out. To receive the proper help with your settings and adjustments....please post a fully completed BIOS Template.

I'm really considering buying the RAM you recommended, Jeffrey. I'm losing time and money left and right over here because photoshop and illustrator are lagging REALLY badly. But I'm not even sure I can blame my RAM on this problem, it could very well be that I'm using the CS3 versions instead of CS5. But a $75 RAM upgrade is much better than the $950 adobe upgrade. I was going to ask for BIOS help in another thread. I guess I could just post it here later. I have to try to finish this work first though.

It's because of the red colored fonts and such....easy fix.....copy your template and paste it into a new text document on your desktop....save it......make your changes and copy/paste it into your post, replacing the one that is there.

I thought I'd mention real quick that when I first got the machine, I had it running at 10x multiplier. It worked fine, but when my water cooler starting going out, I dropped it down to 8x to be safe. The new cooler on it is much better than the old one, but when I go back up to 10x I get freezes. So I'm hoping I can get it back to that point. I'm open to the idea of buying new ram, as I said before, if it would help the overall performance.

I'd like to see if I can up that a bit and keep the system stable. To be honest, I've had troubles with this machine since day one, but I haven't had the time to really try to fix it for optimal performance. Stability is key, as this is the computer I use for my work. When it freezes on me, it costs me (and my clients) money. But I can't take a risk on doing too much. If I burn out my CPU or MoBo, I'm screwed. Any help is appreciated!
Is the P07 BIOS the version that came on the board when you got it? Why have you not updated it? Please try the above changes in (BOLD).

Jeffrey, Thanks for the response. I have tried upping the ram to 1333 (as suggested previously in this thread) but windows wouldn't load. It POST'd just fine but windows froze on loading 3 times. I've also tried changing tRAS to 24 a few times, but it always seemed to have a negative impact on stability. I'll try again though. And the reason for the SPP and MCP voltages are they helped stabilize the system when I added the second GTX280. But I'll try dropping those down as well. The board shipped with P05, and there were issues. When P06 came out I flashed it and stability improved slightly. P07 fixed the majority of the crashes, so I stuck with it. I've heard a lot of people say that if your machine is doing fine, don't risk flashing it. I read the changelogs when a new BIOS comes out, but very few of them mention actual performance increases or fixing RAM issues. So I just left it at 07, which a few people still swear by to this day. However, if you think that going up to P10 will help (and has minimal risk of bricking my machine) then I'll try it. Did P10 have some big advantages? Thanks again for your help

The P10 BIOS says it provides Improved CPU Compatability. I do not know if the updated BIOS would make an improvement for you or not. I personally believe in keeping Firmware up to date with the latest available. Mobo BIOS Flashing is very quick and painless when done correctly....however; if one is not comfortable with doing it then, it may be best to leave it alone. My main concern right now is your RAM. What are the exact spex as listed on the sticker on the modules? (Timings, speed and voltage)

From that other thread - I am running this: 2 of the 8GB Dominator GT DDR 3 2000 kits ( CMT8GX3M2A2000C9 ) On a 790i @ 1600 Mhz with a 9770 CPU just fine. I can dig up the post with the specs that I'm running at, but I've had them in there quite a while without a problem. 16 GB is nice!

Oh, I thought I'd posted the final - the changes I made were per your recommendation: HT Spread Spectrum: [ Auto] (Disabled) PCle Spread Spectrurn(MCP): [ Auto] (Disabled) C1E Enhanced Halt State: [ Enabled] (Disabled) Execute Disable Bit: [ Enabled] (Disabled) I set all of those too

Mike, Do you have any freezes or crashes with your current setup? Even occasionally? And do you use the fan that comes with the ram? Do you have a 3dMark Vantage score to show? The idea of 16gb is very exciting. However, $300 for RAM is not. If I purchased this ram, would it go onto a p67 board without issue?

Jeffrey, I took out the RAM and the stickers say 1333mhz, 9-9-9-24 1.7v. I took out all 4 sticks to verify they were all the same.
I turned it on and on the startup screen it showed the RAM to be running in safe mode (7-7-7-20). so I jumped into the BIOS and changed the settings to match the sticker.
powered up and the system gave me a long beep code and halted on C1. Tried again and got the same thing. Powered down, shut off the psu for a minute, and powered on again. This time it got past C1 but the RAM was in safe mode again. It allowed me back into the BIOS where I changed everything back to the settings I posted before.
I have some work to do for the next few days so I might not be able to try anything again for a while. And thanks again for your help.
