Hi Team,
Thanks for taking the time to check this out and possibly help. I recently purchased my first real desktop gaming system. I will boot the system up for the first time to find the digital display read a code 04. the computer starts up and runs just fine, but after a few minutes it will force restart. so far when it does this it always boots back up with the code A0 and runs fine from then on. I guess that is really the only thing really bothering me about this system. I am wondering about one thing, I hear the digital display should have a cpu temp read out? I have never seen this, it is always either 04 to start - reboot - them A0.

Thank you in advance for any information / help you can provide.

I am running the following equipment in this build.
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz 8 MB Cache LGA 1155
  • Motherboard: EVGA Z77 FTW
  • Graphics Card: EVGA 1070 SC
  • Power Supply: Professional Series™ Gold AX1200 — 80 PLUS® Gold Certified Fully-Modular Power Supply
  • Hard drive: Intel 530 Solid State Drive Retail Kit 120gb ( I have a 1TB SSD ordered on amazon coming soon)
  • Cooling: Hydro Series™ H100i Extreme Performance CPU Cooler & 5 Fan Set up
  • System Memory: Kingston KVT8FP-HYC 16gb ddr3 1600mhz 99.99
  • Operating System: Windows 10 x64
  • Bios Version E699 1.22 x64 3/07/2013 (should be the latest version)

This will sound crazy but double check your power button I had this trouble before and my start up power button would stick pushed in and it would do what you are talking about. I hope it helps you. It might not but might be worth a shot.

Does this issue occur when booting the system with just the essentials?

@ Thorbans, I did check the power button. this is not the issue.

@ Sajin, I'm not sure if this will be the right answer to your question, but I only have the one sdd drive with a fresh copy of windows 10. the only thing on the pc at the moment are the bios, and drivers for the equipment.

Try booting the system with just the cpu, ssd, 1 stick of ram, mouse and keyboard only.

I did like you said.i removed 3 memory sticks from right to left. removed the gpu,and wireless card, all harddrives but the os. crunk it up and it is showing what im thinking is the temp dispay now.
it stays at 47 but will flux slightly to 46 and once or twice went to 50 51. it ran for about 5 minutes then force reset.

I know whats going on...... when you first boot the system it will boot to the post screen and then reboot itself right after, correct? Its supposed to do that double boot when its running all auto settings in the bios to sense the proper voltages and ram timings etc..... That's also why its crashing once you made it to desktop. You need to reboot, go into the bios manually and input the correct vcore voltage for your cpu, correct timings, voltage and command rate of 2 for your ram at the very least, then save and reboot. You can reboot and go back into the bios and setupo the rest of the parameters once you have it somewhat stable. Auto settings, especially on the better boards meant for overclocking, aren't too good to use for everyday stability. They will get you booted but they are really meant to be manually setup.

Code 04 in this type of bios is normally a memory refresh.  Go into the bios like said above and put in the correct timings and voltage to the ram.  While you are in there, take a look at CPU temp to make sure it's normal.

    Overclocking guide

I still have my z77 and run it still today.   I can look at my clocks and voltages when I get home and see what I'm running.  I think either 4 or 4.2 ghz daily.   Waiting to upgrade to a new board in a few weeks.  Board still has a lot of life in it and also, this board was quirky to get a good stable clock.  Some of the bus speeds had holes in them that would make stability problems.  stock, no problems but you had to work for higher overclocks.

Double boot taking 5 minutes? Should take seconds not minutes.

that would be great. I cant really find a spec sheet for the memory. i tried to go to kingston and find specs from their site but they dont have this one. any idea there? I guess my biggest worry is just getting it to stop force rebooting on me.

At least the motherboard was able to disable the ecc features and allow the system to run with ecc memory.

Just be aware that the SPD (Serial Presence Detect) speed that programmed into the RAM's onboard SPD chip is normally lower and slower the the RAM's full rated voltage speed and and timings, which gives boot compatibility across different platforms/motherboards..That voltage, speed, timing and command rate is what's used when those settings are on [Auto] in the BIOS.

To run the RAM at full rated speed it's often necessary to manually set the speed, timing, voltage and command rate to the mfgr's specs, or use an X.M.P. profile.

RAM can have different X.M.P. profiles to choose from, some of which may cause a no-boot situation..Make sure your mobo BIOS is up to date because some updates improve X.M.P. and RAM compatibility.

It's always best to set the RAM's speed, timing, voltage and command rate to the mfgr's specs in the BIOS.

I feel i was pretty fortunate for the most part. everything seems to be working pretty good on this rig. it seems to run fine. i was running a laptop with a 1060 card. when i tried this out the other day on a game, i was pretty amazed with the quality difference. i can now see why everyone would rather a desktop for sure.

copy that Bob. the last time they put out a bios update for the other board was in 2013. I did make sure it was running the latest.

    Hey Team,
I got my Corsair Memory in today. I think mabe I purchased to much not knowing. the ram says, 16gb, (4x4GB), 1866MHZ , 9-10-9-27, 1.50V
i got 4 sticks total, system would not boot with all 4 in the board. i took the two out from the black slots. I have the bios open and on the page that has basic timing configuration.
the memory is grayed out until turn memory frequency limiter from auto to 1867mhz ( should i choose this one or 1800?) it only has those two options and the ram says 1866.

im guessing after that i would go to
    Basic Timing Configuration
    tcl 9
    trcd 10
    trp 9
    tras 27

after this i cant seem to find the voltage input. if i am correct with most of this, would i be missing anything else?

you can use 1800 (ddr 900). I put in the timings and put the memory on auto on mine.  (don't know why but I haven't messed with it in years).  just enter those timings into the respective places.  Memory voltage is vdimm on the overclocking tab.    set it to 1.5

so i tried that then put in all for sticks to find it not booting up.
I did try this thou and it seems to boot up on all 4. under performance memory profiles i choose xmp profile 1. this seems to be doing the trick and at least allowing me to boot up with all 4 ram sticks.
it seems it auto set everything to DDR3-1867 9-10-9-27-1N-1.50V
