For all those having trouble with the flash program sitting at the "please input file name" screen, I can tell you that I had the same problem when I first bought this board and found out eventually it was because I was using an IDE dvd burner....   Purchased a SATA burner and everything has went flawlessly since....  Just an option for troubleshooting...

You my friend are a Genius , went to BestBuy grabbed a sata DVD player and BAMMM!!!! Bios 80 installed !!!!
Thank you sedril !!!!!!!

and thanks to all for your help !!!!

Sweet!  At _last_ an explanation for all the random hangs at "please input"

For the record, did you just need to _boot_ your existing burned CD on the SATA drive, or did you have to actually _burn_ the ISO on the SATA drive?  (I see you said "player" but just  to be sure...)

Thanks, and congrats,
Z.

I've seen that when S3 sleep was  not working correctly.  After one or more _successful_ sleep wake cycles, a subsequent power off _might_ hang
as you describe.

I don't use S3, but I leave my machine long enough at times that Windows does its power saving thing and turns off the display etc. It would certainly be interesting to correlate whether the not-turning-off times correlate to these.

The "does it in Linux" may be a bit of a red herring.  If you had run Windows and rebooted to Linux without a full power off cycle (maybe including AC mains) the S3 quirks footprints in BIOS may have persisted across the reboot to the other OS.  I've seen that too.

I think you're spot on with this. There's another quirk where, when booting Linux, I notice the kernel pauses for a few seconds -- in places where it never does (usually at finding the CPU nodes, early on). Never seen this before in all my years of using Linux (we're talking back when Slackware came on floppies) on tons of system builds. However, if I boot Windows first and then reboot to Linux, the pause never happens. Something is definitely saved in the machine state between boots.

Remove each pci card and usb powered hub (if you have any) one at a time and see if this resolves your issue.  I've had a PCI modem card create the problem as well...the particular card also prevented it from sleeping (even though the ports were set to allow sleep).  I corrected the problem with a new modem card (used for faxing).
...
martigen, I'm curious to know if you have additional USB powered hubs or what PCI cards may be used (if any).

I don't have any USB hubs connected. Don't even own any USB hubs (the standard ports on the mobo usually do me). In terms of PCI, the only cards in the box are two GTX 580s and an Auztentech HTHD, all PCI-E. Additionally, all on-board PCI devices I don't use are disabled, this includes the Marvell controller and USB 3.0 controller. It's a very lean, clean, system :)

Once installed this USB externally powered hub, every so often it creates the exact same scenerio where the computer shuts down but the case fans are still active.

Are you sure this isn't just a coincidence? Be interesting if it occurs if using your machine with no hubs connected for a while. The problem you describe is what I and it seems some others have been getting, but as above I don't use USB hubs (and in fact the only USB devices connected to my computer 90% of the time are just keyboard and mouse. The other 10% is the odd USB key. And this wouldn't be a factor -- the issue happens with just keyboard and mouse are plugged in).

Getting couple entries in Eventviewer.
Source: Disk
Event ID: 11
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1

I had this error also (had nothing to do with my RAID)

1. All previously used USB HDD, flash drive connected in Windows
2. All USB devices on the system tray safely remove

3. System Shutdown
4. USB devices remove
5. Start Windows

This thread is going all over the place but here is where I am with my scenario. I reduced my bclock to 160 from 168 and the memory shows correct. Anything over 160 gradually reduces usable memory in Windows 7 properties. If I go to 162 it shows 16GB usable, 168 shows 7.99 usable. Odd! Tweaking timings also reduces usable memory. Voltages across the board do not seem to help any. Vdroop does not help. Guess I will stay with what I can get until the final version 80 arrives.

Not a coincidence, if I remove the USB powered hub, the problem never reoccurs.  It's such a small issue to me though...it only happens about 1 in every 5 shutdowns as you mentioned...If it bothered me much, I'd just take the powered hub off.  Now if S3 did not work...that would be a major concern to me.

Good find with the IDE drive and flashing. IDE is so old and drives are generally inexpensive...my suggestion to all is to get rid of all IDE drives and switch to anew :-).

Yup, told you so on your own thread. It is your CPU's IMC that is causing this. Some settings in the BIOS may be contributing but for me, changing RAM/CPU has changed the clock at which this occurs too.

I don't see any way to get my memory and cpu where I want them without raising over 160. What did you do to overcome your threshold?

Small, but annoying and possibly damaging. I came back home the other week to find my PC on, fans blaring, quite a bit of heat coming out -- and it had been like this for many hours. I had shutdown my machine before I went out, and of course it hadn't turned off like it should.

Now I need to stay around and make sure the machine shuts down properly before leaving the room. But is this what I pay for with my top-of-the-line Classified 3? I'm not aware of any other X58 board from other manufacturers with this many "small" but annoying issues -- like the double-pump VT.

Yep I was also worried when my computer hanged when shutting down. I have no USB power things connected. Still a beta bios so I hope Jacob can look into this cause I thought it was just me but it seems like it isn't.

The only thing is that it happened only once. The thing I did different was put my computer to sleep for the first time after flashing 80 BIOS. Since then I've put my computer to sleep two or three more times and my computer has shut down completely when I shut down my computer. Don't know what could cause the computer not to shutdown completely, so I would check my overclocking to make sure it's 100% stable cause it can be a reason it happens. In my case this bios needed more voltage than the past bios, about two increments higher than what I had.

I just used one that I allready burned from my ide DVD player.. So its just the need to have a Sata player for the install not to burn it..

About the IDE vs SATA CD issue... before booting from the IDE drive, go into the BIOS and make sure the IDE ports are enabled and set to IDE mode.

This board is acting wicked strange. It almost seems that using odd number settings causes the memory usage issue. I have been trying for hours to determine who the culprit is. Nothing other than lowering timings and clocks has the memory come back. I'll say one thing: After toying with memory timings for a while I learned a few things about how the different timings affect performance. I thought tRFC did not do much for performance. My memory was defaulted to 128. I moved it down to 88 and my read and write speeds added another 2000 in Everest. But of course I got the memory usable error in Windows. I bumped it up 2 to 90 and  still get the 2000 in Everest and all memory showing. I'm going to go try lowering my tRAS a bit and see how I make out. I'll be back! This is addicting...

Can you let me know if this updated Intel RAID Rom 10.5.0.744 will support a single RAID 5 configuration that's larger than 2TB?
I remember this being an issue for E759 with a previous firmware version. I currently have 4.5TB configured and would hate to lose it.

Thanks In advance

Unfortunately this is one of the draw backs of the new RAID rom, there are some limitations when going over 2TB.

Certain B-Clocks can affect memory but just because anything around 160 reduces B-Clock doesnt mean you cant go higher.  Around a B-Clock of 170 makes memory drop out of my system but if i increase it to 18/0+ the memory will show up again, it seems its just certain B-Clocks the CPU/Memory Controller/modules doesnt like.

(Sorry for my bad english)
EVGA_JacobF thank you again for your work with bios 80.

bios ROM 80 with 10.5 and SSD raid is ok, good job Evga.
Now for me (and others) remain two major problems to fix in the bios:

1) Be as simple ROM 10.5 with SSD (AHCI not raid).
2) The problem starts in 2 times.
Bios 80 still have not fix the problem, why? the problem has long been known.

I expect that now impatiently, why not have a fix for this?
This is bad for the HDD, it should fix it if you like it Evga.

I have 4 raid on ARECA 1231ML, the new bios will always be ok with my 4 raid or should I redo the 4 raids?
We demandont much, but we Avont always wanted to have the highest performance for our computer.
Evga still continue your work, you are on the right path and we are very happy with your job.

I will receive a new chip bios EVGA (flash), and I really want to finish with the problems for 1 year with the start of my capricious 4 way sli.

my memory card reader stops the bios from fully loading. it stops on the first screen when it shows up, the one with processor/memory info. it won't boot when plugged in,  when unplugged it boots lol. ive had this issue with all my pcs with at least one usb device.  never my memory card reader though.  my usb 2 hub would stop it as well iv'e got it plugged into my usb3(eu30) card now.

newest cpu-z is 1.57 can read my cpu.  (cpu-z 1.56 cannot anymore) -> likely do to the microcode update???

You know, I tried everything for timings and bclock and it was just acting very strange. I could tell that there was something beyond a normal Windows or bios problem. After all my posts and many good suggestions, I went back and cleared my cmos, did a full power cycle, reflashed the 80 bios and now I have not seen any issues all the way up to 4 Gig. I believe the issues I was having were user error. In order to keep my stable overclock, I left my bios with the OC settings when flashing to 80. Most likely not a good idea. I did notice that during post where it shows your Qpi value, it was showing values off by a digit or two. For anyone else out there, learn from my mistake and be sure to start with a clean default bios when flashing. The time I wasted trying to figure out my mistake could have been avoided. I want to Thank Evga and all of the members here for their great feedback and dedication to other members. It is a great place in here and I've yet to not solve my problems!

Let me understand this... You just reset the CMOS and re-entered your settings manually and your problems went away?

Hmm I flashed with all the settings at default the first time but I still have problems going from a bclock of 141 to 142... 1MHz and it is night and day(1969MHz Vs 1983MHz DDR)... I can also create the problem by changing my tRFC from 88 to 79.

I flashed to the 80 Bios but started getting a error just before booting into windows that says 'BOOTMNGR MISSING'.
I did a complete power off and cleared cosmos still got the same thing. I went back to 77 Bios and everything is fine.
I tried this a couple of times but still kept on getting the same error. Any ideas how to fix it ?

From my experience with 80, if your system is running fine just wait until the final release is ready. Unless you are bored and want to try things out. Although the performance is great, it is glitchy for now. Who knows though, a lot of folks here have had no trouble. Try it, only takes a few minutes to flash.

Switched my 4x1TB Samsung F3 drives to Raid 10, works perfect.

I have seen beta BIOS's hang around for a long time on this forum. So, don't bet on a final release BIOS. It may not come!

EVGA X58 SLI Rev 1.1
i7 920 D0 LinX/Prime Stable 4.4(21x210) HT ON
1.3125vcore, +100mV, vDIMM 1.625v, Rest Auto
OCZ Gold 6GB 1680 (2:8) 9 9 9 24 1T
Prolimatech Megahalems (Push/Pull)
Because of S3 issues: 21x196, Auto vcore, 2:8, 8-8-8-24-1T 12GB.

Like you I did a reflash but before i did i made sure I went to defaults in bios double checked that everything cleared and cleared cmos did a fresh Flash from Bios 78 to Bios 80 and everything is working SWEEET!!!
And my main drive which is a Crucial SSD 256 Gig picked up some good performance in the AS SS Benchmark , before my best score was a 670 now im hitting 690s on a single SSD..
