EVGA is dragging their feet on this. Bad business practice to just soak up all the $$$ possible from the X58 chipset, and as it appears to be reaching its EOL, the updates stop coming, the innovation stops. This sort of practice will deter customers from continuing their brand loyalty. Just get it done EVGA...you have the resources. It's getting tiresome to only see advancements and bug fixes AFTER the community does your job of finding them, and then complains to have them fixed. Seems like all EVGA does is try to avoid bad press, period.

Re:EVGA X58 Motherboards - BIOS 78 Released 2011/02/01 06:19:48 (permalink)
EVGA's only interest seems to be getting new stuff out as soon as possible and get big bucks for it. For example; EVGA P67, EVGA GTX 560 Ti, EVGA GT 440.

Of course there isn't money made with updating their current stuff. So we, the customers who already purchased EVGA products, are coming second after new customers...

Oh well, if this is the new way of EVGA doing business, maybe it's time to look into other options...

EVGA used to be a great company (I've been a customer since early 2005). But after 2017 it went completely downhill. EVGA doesn't treat customers as customers, but as complete idiots! I used to own over 30 EVGA products (videocards, motherboards, PSU's and so on). Not anymore. #evga #pathetic

Jacob, have you thought about giving a few of the forum members some more advanced (internal) BIOS modding tools to try and help you find a solution? Under NDA, obviously.

Why is everyone getting so miffed over this. Heck, "most" of us never even heard of RAID ROM's till a couple of weeks ago.At least I admit it, LOL

Yeah, but you aren't everyone and you thought it was something you would install in Windows. :P ;)

It's funny you will see faster P67 swap outs before I/O degradation/failures begin to happen. Because it's on Intel's dime (more like 7 billion dimes)

Oh well, I feel like I am overreacting. I flashed the BIOS, all is well, took my same OC. Boot seems faster

It should be. In fact, it's a lot faster for other X58 boards with 10.1 OROM (not 8.5 we just got). And the performance is better, too.
These are the reasons people want this update so badly.

I understand that the performance/reliability is to be had there, for sure. I am more concerned about compatibility with future drives, in particular SSDs.

It's not only faster on X58! My work-pc, which has an Asus P5Q Deluxe mobo, which also had an older version on the Intel RAID ROM (version 8.0.0.1038), was also much faster (read/write) when I flashed it to a modded bios with newer roms (including the Intel RAID ROM 10.1). Not to mention it seems to boot up way faster.

So EVGA should really do their best to make the latest Intel RAID ROM work with their EVGA X58 mobo's. We paid for the best, so we should expect the best, right?

When you say it doesn't support partitions over 2TB, does that mean any drive over 2TB on the Intel controller won't work or be visible, or does that mean my Raid can't be over 2TB. I have a 180gb 3way Raid 0 but also a 2tb and 3tb backup drives all hooked into the Intel controller. I have other drives on the Marvell controller so I can't switch them over. Should I update my BIOS and hope to get faster speeds from my Raid 0?

The limit should only apply to drives that are part of the RAID array. Drives that are not part of any RAID array automatically default to using AHCI.

BIOS 78 Updates:
  • Updates RAID ROM to version 8.5.0.1030
BIOS updating can be accomplished VIA the below methods:

CD/DVD Installation - Recommended installation method
  • Download the correct .iso file below for your motherboard:
        132-BL-E758 - EVGA X58 SLI
  • Use a CD Burning software to burn the .iso image onto a blank CD. Files verified after burning (PowerISO)
  • After it has burned, insert CD and restart the machine, go into the BIOS and load defaults, save and exit (Check)
  • Now set the CD Drive as the primary boot device, or press escape while the system is booting to select CD as the bootable device.(Check)
  • Boots into Windows... everytime...

I can't get the CD to "take." I tried the ALT+F2 as well but that only gives me Windows 7 or Windows Diagnostics.

Can anyone assist me here?

Don't you hammer ESC on these boards to get to the BIOS boot selection screen?

This stinks, BIOS 77 won't boot with my OC. Bios 78 won't even let me go back into the BIOS once flashed. I tried the 77M but it is the same as with 78. I guess I'll have no choice but to stick with 74 for the time being. Maybe I'll try it again if I get one of the six cores some time in the future. I guess the only RAID speed increase I'll be getting is form a stand alone Raid-card.

Yeah that works but even doing that still doesn't boot the .iso file but throws me into Windows again.

Ok, stupid question, but did you burn the ISO as an image or did you just burn "the" ISO file to a disc?

So far it seems ok.

As I'm reading this thread, this post proves my thoughts in that the update is a step in the right direction.  Is it where we should be, probably not, however there is a lot more that EVGA has to consider then meets the eye.  Going to the latest RAID ROM may present some obsticles that EVGA isn't willing to commit to as they may restrict other needed updates.  They are simply trying not to shoot themselves in the foot sort of speak.
Cheers....

You would want the newest, but you can't have it.  X58 BIOS won't support it currently without EVGA removing the 64K option ROM limit.  Modded BIOS was released before this update with the same RAID ROM as this update and the JMicron update.  Still a bit "newer" than this update because of the JMicron.  Other than that the same.

Ok, stupid question, but did you burn the ISO as an image or did you just burn "the" ISO file to a disc?

I tried again and double checked it burned as an image and that worked.

PC seems to boot a little bit faster with 78 vs. 74.

Let's just have some confidence in EVGA that they will succeed. Especially since thet say they have the best technicians around and they should be able to pull this of without any sweat. Otherwise I will be extremely disappointed in EVGA.

Like the EVGA slogan says: "Compromise is for losers"

I simply expect EVGA to pull this of.
