Doing a new upgraded build in the next week.  Got a $50 off i7 7820X code from Newegg this morning...got the processor...and new motherboard.  Here is the build:

EVGA X299 FTW K
Intel i7 7820X
EVGA CLC 280 AIO Cooler
EVGA GTX 1080 TI Black Edition (from old system...3 months old)
Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow Series ATX Case
512 GB Samsung 960 Pro m.2 (from old system...only a month old)
32 GB of GSkill DDR4-2666 (from old system...installed 2016)
Corsair HX850i PSU (from old system...installed 2016)

Glad to still use EVGA Motherboard and new peripherals.  Products and support have been superb!

Gotta upgrade that RAM. Skylake-X needs faster memory due to new mesh topology.

Will do that when I can.  Right now...tapped the budget...

MSI MAG X670-E Tomahawk;  Ryzen 7 7800X3D; Asus TUF RTX 4070 TI OC; Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 PSU; 32 GB  Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL30 RGB; Corsair iCue Link H150i LCD 360MM AIO; 2-Western Digital Black 4 TB SN850X NVMe; Creative SoundBlaster Z;  Lian Li Lancool III; Corsair K70 RGB Pro MX Speed Silver Keyboard; Razer Viper 8K Mouse

Iamrogue
I was going to order FTW-K but after playing with Micro I will wait for some proper reviews.

EVGA as usually delivered on temps and more exciting things like easy OC and general experience but failed horribly on basic stuff

I worry that FTW-K will have he same issues and it makes me wait before ordering new mobo from EVGA

I think that the delay with releasing FTW-K and Dark are the result of removing issues from Micro experience - and Micro, its not market ready... and i doubt thats the issue only with my mobo

What basic stuff failed?  Can you elaborate?

MSI MAG X670-E Tomahawk;  Ryzen 7 7800X3D; Asus TUF RTX 4070 TI OC; Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 PSU; 32 GB  Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL30 RGB; Corsair iCue Link H150i LCD 360MM AIO; 2-Western Digital Black 4 TB SN850X NVMe; Creative SoundBlaster Z;  Lian Li Lancool III; Corsair K70 RGB Pro MX Speed Silver Keyboard; Razer Viper 8K Mouse

Nice.
I need to stay with X99, maybe to upgrade only CPU on i7-6900K.
I know price would be similar as i7-7820X but at least I could save money on motherboard.
GPU is priority.

I went “old tech” and purchased an x99 classified from newegg. Very stable and quite pleased. 6850k is $349.

Dark looks very interesting but x299 platform seems to have issues from intel. more interested in HPC than anything else. Spend $$$ on gpu and psu. I use an $85 card (1030) to run my graphics and 2 (soon to be 4) 1080 ti’s to crunch numbers.

Next up is to build a custom loop as opposed to aio and pray nothing explodes

A lot if issues ensued because the vendors (Asus, MSI, EVGA, etc.) got blindsided and were not able to work out the bugs from release.  With some time and maturation of bios...the X299 platform has improved.  Voltages are better...fewer complaints of VRM overheat (remember..DeBauer tested under extreme conditions of overclock and software).  Example...many vendors are on sixth generation, seventh and even eighth generation bios releases.  With each release, X299 improves.  EVGA was late to the party...but I expect that their initial releases are much more stable than others.  Perhaps they did it on purpose.  Chatted with a few techie friends...they warned me off X299 early...now they say it is improved and ready for prime time.  One can hope.

With that in mind...your choice of X99 Classified and 6850K should serve you well.  X99 is older and extremely stable.  I just wanted to upgrade to 8 core / 16 thread...where right now...i7 6900K can be had for around $800 when on sale...spent slightly more to get 7820X and EVGA X299 FTW K.

So I pulled the trigger on an ASUS X299 Rampage Extreme(ly overpriced) VI last night as it finally came back into stock@ the egg, after thinking about it though....

If EVGA could assure us that the dark will be out by the end of 2017, I could order the FT-W and just use the step up once the Dark boards are available?  Correct?  I'll through this over in the other part of the forum, but wanted to leave it here as others may have had the same lapse as I did about the step up being an option.

If you are anywhere near a Fry's Electronics.  They have the i7 6900K on sale this week only through Saturday for $799.99.  Go to www.frys.com and check the ad in the upper right hand corner.  It is on the Weekly ad page.  I just figured that If I were to go that route...this cost about the same for me.  I needed a new case and CPU cooler either way...

I found in my country guy sell motherboard, cooler and i7-6900K for 700 euro.
And only i7-6900K ask 450 euro.
Still is under warranty everything.
I could sell i7-5820K for 200-230 euro.

i7-6900K is not much slower than i7-7820X, have two advantages, epoxy and PCI-E lanes, but mostly people with watercooling could profit from him. I suppose I would be able max to OC him on 4.0GHz with H100. Some max clock of i7-6900K is arround 4.3GHz and that's native Turbo of i7-7820X. i7-7820X could work on 4.3GHz with small cooler, anything, from other side i7-6900K need serious custom loop to keep CPU on normal temps. I suppose i7-6900K on 4.1GHz will have similar single threaded score as my i7-5820K on 4.2GHz. And that's real advantage of i7-7820X. He don't need a lot effort to work on 4.5GHz,  and i7-6900K is not capable to OC so much to catch single threaded performance of i7-7820X on 4.5GHz.

Wow finally a decent VRM cooler! Good job EVGA. Would love to try the Dark. But I fear it will take ages until it hits the shelves in germany.

I wonder when the Micro will finally be available in EU... still patiently waiting to get a word from EVGA when to expect stock of the Micro in GER. I really want to get my hands on one. Got a VRM block made for the Micro

I have the same processor. On the AORUS X299 Gaming 9 motherboard I was able to overclock only to 4.8 GHz, so I want to buy a dark to get 5 GHz =)

Be careful spending extra money hoping for a minuscule amount of performance gain. That may be your chips limit. :-)

I think that's not smart decision if you hit limit of your CPU.
You need to check how much space you have with voltage and to think about better cooling if you have Air or AIO system.

Great stuff mate!

I will be sorely tempted to buy the x299 dark when the great white whale finally makes it to shore... er... something like that...

When it’s for sale, I will cannibalize my new x99 build and embrace the DARK!

If EVGA could assure us that the dark will be out by the end of 2017, I could order the FT-W and just use the step up once the Dark boards are available?  Correct?  I'll through this over in the other part of the forum, but wanted to leave it here as others may have had the same lapse as I did about the step up being an option.

That's a good idea. I have the micro 2 and the FTW-K is a step up option for me so I would think that would work for you no problem.

I have been building computers since 2001 :)
I know what I'm doing.

Never questioned your knowledge, but every generation produces the same thing.. and every time, the same thing happens.. this will be no different.

Oh man why did evga not include a 10g nic on their Dark mobo? The asus rampage does have it but cost too much and there is another board with 10g from asrock but lacks other features. Decisions...

To bobmitch:
What about overclocking?
I have the same processor. On the AORUS X299 Gaming 9 motherboard I was able to overclock only to 4.8 GHz, so I want to buy a dark to get 5 GHz =)

Played around a bit more today.  Overclocked the processor to 4.6 ALL cores...ran Prime (newest version).  Voltage was 1.21...after 20 minutes CPU hit 70C.  Let it run for 15 minutes like that...CLC 280 kept it really cool...at the 70C.  Backed it down to where I was...at 4.2 GHZ...my voltage for CPU is 1.16.  Keeping this generation under 1.20 is supposed to keep it really cool.

MSI MAG X670-E Tomahawk;  Ryzen 7 7800X3D; Asus TUF RTX 4070 TI OC; Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 PSU; 32 GB  Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL30 RGB; Corsair iCue Link H150i LCD 360MM AIO; 2-Western Digital Black 4 TB SN850X NVMe; Creative SoundBlaster Z;  Lian Li Lancool III; Corsair K70 RGB Pro MX Speed Silver Keyboard; Razer Viper 8K Mouse

Doesn't matter what they use if you keep it cool, I'm currently using the 7960x all cores and threads running at 4.7ghz and CPU voltage at 1.250 volts and stays at 57 celcius even in time spy extreme benchmark
