Even with an X series board, which I have, I’ve run out of lanes with my NVLink and NVME drives populated. SLI support is the best it’s been in years also. People that do not use SLI always love to spread misinformation and comment on things they have no experience with.

This audio card does not even support MQA so streaming Tidal or other lossless audio will effectively be 13 bit.

What cpu are you using on an X series board to where you ran out of lanes with SLI and nvme drives?

I am just curious as you clearly know more than everyone else on the subject. I understand only that there are 28 and 40 lane cpus for the X series boards, so you NEED 3 gpu’s And an nvme just to get to 28 lanes, which I doubt you have, since nvlink only supports two cards. Since you only have two, that would leave you with at least 8 more lanes, as far as my math can see.

Now if you have 40 lanes... heck, looking st my two titan Xp’s And my pci audio card, both of my titans STILL run at x16 with the audio card and an nvme installed, so I am curious what you are rambling about people not knowing, and would like a decent understanding of where this is going instead of lumping everyone together and being vague.

I also really want to understand why you are taking the time to bash something you clearly don’t want.

Calm down Scarlet, I'm not bashing anything. I'm just confused why EVGA would release something like this that is such a niche product that is essentially a stereo only sound card? Seems like an odd choice, but hey I wish them well.

Also, yes, I do know more about NVLINK / SLI usage than most who comment on it. I've been using SLI since 1998 and the Voodoo2 cards. Most people BASH sli while they have no experience using it. Meanwhile, enthusiasts like me that enjoy high framerate, high resolution gaming love and use it. Combined with GSYNC it's amazing.

As you can see in my specs, I'm using an i9 7900X. 44 lanes. NVLINK uses 32. I'm using 3 NVME drives populated in all 3 of my RVIE's available spots: that is using all 44 of my lanes.

I'm hoping EVGA releases an external DAC that is built to the same high quality of this one. Like you, I love EVGA products!

On the audio side, I'm using a Dolby Atmos receiver with a full 9.2 surround system (HDMI). So from a gaming perspective this product is probably not for me. I also use an external Schitt Stack + Sennheiser HD650s for times when I need to communicate with my gaming buddies on teamspeak along with a full mixer + AudioTechnica stereo mic (around $1400 for the mic alone). I'm an audiophile with multiple setups in my home, one of which is a complete Martin Logan 2 channel setup. I can appreciate the quality and design that went into the NU card, I just have a hard time understanding it's place in the market.

So I have a pro mic I can't plug into it [I need a three prong plug/receiver].
And a surround sound head phone with 3 speakers on each side that uses 3 plugs that I can't use.
Um ok so what good is this again?

I still would need my M-audio adapter for my mic, that I all ready use, and still need my on board audio for surround sound, which I all ready use. So I see absolutely no need for this at all.

They dropped the ball on this one for me anyhow.
I can't see this as anything more than a "wow" toy for those who are wanting to pretend to be audiophiles.

I do not see any pro being able to use this at all.

Oh well. Maybe next time guys.

EDIT:
Yes I did spend several minutes going over all the specs before typing this as well.

You typed all of that but did not say who actually made the headphones - what are they?

Will the new EVGA sound card support any of the following? DTS Connect, DTS-X, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Live, Dolby Atmos?

It doesn't have HDMI out. Quite sure HDMI is the only thing that can carry Dolby Atmos and DTS X. I've been waiting a long time for a sound card with this. I mentioned it to the guys with Creative at E3 a year or two ago, but no one is listening.  : /

Well this might interest you then. Notice in the pics the SoundblasterX AE-9 has a HDMI socket on it. Creative said it would be out hopefully in January

Virtual Headphone surround similar to Creative SBX or Dolby Headphone?

This is what I'm interested in. My current sound card that i bought in 2016 supports Dolby Headphone and it's an absolute must for my next sound card.

Best way to explain this: if it doesn’t work with your equipment, it isn’t of use to you. So, curious about the point of your post.

Not sure why folks feel the need to post that it wouldn’t work for them, as if they designed it for their hardware and the manufacturer accidentally used the wrong I/O. This sound card is designed for the people that can utilize the I/O.

Sometimes we feel the need to speak honestly and practically.
Also some manufacturers like feedback, whether good bad or indifferent.
Also where I live we can still speak freely.
And lastly, I was not snarky or anything. I only spoke the truth as I was able to see it concisely, and elucidating the product information as it applied to me for the benefit of those who made it.

So I hope that answers your question.
Sad though that you imply only those who have a deep personal knowledge of the product and abiding love of those who made it and can 100% use the product are the ones that should comment.

Besides that.
Others have commented that they can not and will not use this product. So why not jump down their throats as well?

this is mostly for those who have a mic with a 3.5 mm  plug, a set of headphones and an external set of stereo speakers or amplifier. I am no expert but would this work with an Audio Visual (AV) Receiver? You said you have a 7.1 speaker setup and an AV Receiver  might  be a good choice and or a better option. That's just my two cents' worth.

It would work perfectly well if you don't care about uncompressed multichannel audio such as multichannel PCM, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD-MA, Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, DSD Multi, etc. Personally I think needing this on a PC is such a fringe use case as the only formats that have these are BluRay Discs (typically DTS HD-MA or Dolby TrueHD), DVD-Audio Discs (MLP but in reality it's just multichannel PCM) and SACDs (only for DSD). How often are people backing up BluRays on their computers and playing them on the PC but sending the A/V to a home theater system? Same with DVD-Audio which is pretty much a dead format. And Same with SACDs which you can't actually backup to a PC without following a pretty complicated process (Original PS3 with original firmware with OtherOS functionality).

I'm not aware of ANY streaming services that offer audio codecs better than Dolby Digital+ which I "think" can be outputted by Toslink. Unsure if any games use multichannel PCM when selecting 5.1 for sound settings, I'd bet on just Dolby Digital 5.1.

For DSD Stereo, would need to use the analog outs to the receiver which means the Sound Card will act as the DAC. For anything else such as normal Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, or stereo PCM in any resolution up to 24bit/192khz, can use the Toslink out to a receiver.

Sorry for the double post but figured I'd also call out that the capacitors used in this are VERY commonly used and accepted as quality components by audio engineers in modern day equipment and in vintage restorations.

You gonna be using it for recording? Analog to digital? I'm all about DSD, SACD is my favorite digital format.

Re: EVGA NU AUDIO: LIFELIKE AUDIO 2019/01/09 15:52:11 (permalink)
As someone just looking for a good stereo dac that can do DSD how would this sound card stack up against other standalone dacs in the same price range? I already have a Rotel stereo preamp and amp and Vandersteen 1C speakers. Looking to plug a newly built pc (x299 dark) into this system and my old apogee duet firewire is no longer an option. I have a cdp with some kind of bur brown dac in it that I enjoy, but really am lost in terms of how today's dacs are different from each other. See things like multibit and delta sigma, but unfortunately am unable to demo them where I am.

Also noticed the AK4493 dac in this card is also used in this monoprice unit () but it has two of them. What's the benefit of having two?

Ditch the firewire

I LOVE Vandersteen speakers. I have a pair of fully restored 2ci's that I absolutely adore. The only thing with Vandersteens is that they really like a solid state amp that puts out at least 100wpc. I'm driving mine with a restored Marantz 170dc which is about 100wpc but it gets by as my listening room is pretty small.

There aren't a ton of DSD capable DACs out there for a reasonable price so this could be a good option for you. You'd need to connect the sound card via the RCA outs to your preamp.

EDIT: to answer your other questions. I wouldn't worry too much about that super technical jargon. At that point you're better off focusing on getting quality source material.

The dual DAC chips I believe are one for each channel stereo channel

I do not think that they make them any more. I bought them about 15 years ago.
Ok I went to there website and no, they do not have them any longer.
That sucks.
But some others do make multiple speaker headphones with three plug for them.

I hope you find a good pair. I know when I first wore mine and played a game, I kept thinking someone was behind me which creeped me out. In fact all it was is someone in the game behind me.
Pretty intense.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

Sad to say but few headphones have real surround sound.
However I did find two.
Tritton's AX Pro True Surround Sound
And the Razer Tiamat 7.1 V2
These both have multiple speakers in them. I hope that helps :)

Mine uses three plugs.
One for sub and center.
One for rear [left and right].
One for front [left and right].
All of those with multiple speakers do this.
Same as if you bought speakers for a 5.1 system.

I use three plugs coming out of my pc. I then either connect my receiver to the three or my headphones to the three.
Either way I get true surround sound this way.

You're definitely right for strictly DAC purposes but overall it's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. This is meant for someone who has more needs than just a DAC. Not that it won't serve that well, but not a great comparison when putting it side by side with an external one strictly for home audio
My point is that this is nothing special. I have an x7 from creative with better specs than this.

@Chrisdglong: Not necessarily, depends on your wants. From what I can see, the dac in the creative x7 only does 24-bit/192Khz while the dac in this EVGA card does up to 32-bit/384kHz.

That is definitely an attractive feature for production level recording. Personally I'd go with the DSD recording feature at that point as it's still a higher resolution.

Hoping one of you experienced audiophiles get this card and review it for us soon.

If I don't get one before PAX, i'm guessing EVGA will have it on display there for demo purposes. Audio is one of those things that is very subjective per the individual's hearing, age, etc.

I've fallen behind in the audiophile world and will be fixing that soon. I still use a External USB ASUS XONAR DAC, even though it has died on me once under warranty. Now that is out of warranty I feel its a ticking time bomb.

This would require new speakers for me...probably time for them....I have a pair of Cambridge Soundworks from Circa 2003...

Any suggestions for a set up? I was thinking https://www.amazon.com/Lo...r-System/dp/B004M18O60

Just got a set of those before Christmas, replaced my well used Cambridge Soundworks Megaworks THX550 speakers. Nice setup, watch the price of it, it tends to go up and down quickly, I got mine for $199.
