Once this card is my default audio device, can I utilize the pci bus to bring in a source from the optical drive (a audio cd) and have it go through the card for up sampling then to another location, lets say
a HDD or a second optical drive, for the final saving of the file.

If not, then I could still attach a portable exterior cd player in at the line in, and then send it to be up sampled to the HDD or Optical drive. I'll bet that is the only way.
Of course, the former would be simpler and the more preferred.

Wouldn't it be great to have 2 optical drives and run it from one, to the up sampling ,and out to the other. Or out to a HDD would be great too.
That would really be using the bus for in and out.
Doable?

regards and thanks. I'm liking the focus on the 2 channel stereo!

Your best bet with CD recording on a PC is to is to use a USB connect CD drive and use freeware CD Exact Copy (google cd exact copy). This supports the creation of .flac files for optimum lossless copying. It can also be configured to import supporting meta data. Any 'cheap' usb connected cd transport (internal or external) will suffice.

You can also use software such as Foobar for direct playback of the CDs with the advantage Foobar can then be configured for realtime upsampling eg. DSD256. I think you will be amazed at the quality of the output compared to some of the even more extreme CD players.

You will only need the Nu Audio card for playback.

Utterly pointless.  For stereo, you will never need anything more than 44.1 kHz at 24 bit (0 Hz to 22 kHz audio range with 0 to 144 dB [worst case] dynamic range). And realistically, usually 44.1 kHz at 16 bit is sufficient (0 Hz to 22 kHz audio range with 0 to 96 dB [worst case] dynamic range). Keep it real. Keep it compatible.

Post #8, everything you need to know:

Have you even tried dsd upsampling. The evga Delta sigma dac upsamples pcm to dsd prior to processing. If you do this in the computer then you have more control and put less overhead on the dac resulting in layinga more natural sound. Try it!

Pointless. Upsampling has no benefit. There was no useful signal missing from the original 44.1 kHz data stream.  And, up-sampling can't add supposedly missing natural sound to the data.  All up-sampling does is stretch out the data points and add nothing in between.  It's the equivalent of zooming into a pixelated image.  Plus, the dsd is single-bit? Why would you want that? It sounds worse.  And, why would the DAC ever need less overhead? Bunch of nonsense. Sounds like you were converting just for the sake of converting.

I appreciate your frankness but please just try it and I think you will be impressed. Your i7 3770k should be able to handle DSD256 upsampling. You can always use Foobar which doesn't cost anything. And note the upsampling algorithms are a lot more than just a linear interpolation with the result the music is smoother and more natural sounding. There are a lot of forums on the web supporting the value of this process.

No thanks.  The original is a perfect reproduction, as the artist intended.

thanks Triplefun, I've been doing upsampling for years, using software methods. I'd like to do it hardware with this card if I could, as a link in the chain, instead of software upsampling.
I want to bring it in, upsample it hardware using the NU, and save it. My old school analog receivers  could take it RCA inputs. My pioneer optical player won't accept flac, but will pcm.
But for this I mostly want to go from PC to marantz 2285b via rca, after upsampled from optical drive. I can do that with software, but rather do it with the NU hardware.
Does it come with recording software for win 7? What is your take on my intentions now that I've made it more clear.

hey man , thanks..........

Or, you could just hit the play button. It was already lossless audio right off the disc using the technology designed decades ago. That's why you could record the lossless stream; because it was lossless from the start. Why do audiophiles spend so much time and energy trying to reinvent the wheel?

Are there any plans to make an external version of this?  The reviews make this sound fantastic, but the internal sound card format is a problem.

I know there is interest from a number of people for an external version, but there are no current plans for one at the moment.  That's definitely not a "won't happen", it's just it won't happen anytime soon.

This thing is so good, it can hold up against any of the external DAC/amps anywhere near its price.  I would buy in a second if it were available.  And knowing its pedigree, it is going to be good.

Wow, once I turned down the master volume and cranked up the gain, this card really came to life! It sounded super harsh at 100% master volume no matter the gain/headphone setting. I'm super pleased with my audio now, I came from Xonar Essence ST(PCI) that I've been using for 9 years straight in combo with Fidelio X1. Did not expect my headphones to actually sound even better but they do! gj evga and audio note

I am not educated in the point of audio technics and how the components really works together . So maybe my question to you looks a little bit "funny" to you ...

I see on the product site the explantion about the induvidial circuits on the PCB and i don´t understand this. Why are there differences between headphone-output and the Line-Out after the DAC.

So what i seen in pictures and product description, that must not be the truth :-):
Line-Out:      DAC AK4493 > 2 * LME49724 > ADI AD8056 OP-amp > line-out
Headphone:  DAC AK4493  > Maxim DS 1882 > ADI OPA275 OP-amp > LME49600 > headphone-out

Why are the both LME49724 in front of the AD8056 and not in front of the OPA275  ? Is the "functionality" of the both LME49724  integrated in DS 1882 and is this the reason why there different op-amps ( AD8056  / ADI OPA275) in the pathes of Line-ount and headphon-out ?

Thanks the blind man in point of audio technics

Line-Out:      DAC AK4493 > 2 * LME49724 > ADI AD8056 OP-amp > line-out
Headphone:  DAC AK4493  > Maxim DS 1882 > ADI OPA275 OP-amp > LME49600 > headphone-out

You're correct about the line-out path, but the headphone path is like this:
Headphone: Line-out (from AD8056) > Maxim DS 1882 > ADI OPA275 OP-amp > LME49600 > headphone-out

If you look at the front of the board below the AD8056, the two big red capacitors share the line-out signal back to the Maxim potentiometer chip.

@jll544: Thanks for the clarification.

So that means for me, if i want to "modify" the sound with an different op-amp, then i can do it:

- for the headphone output at 2 positions (AD8056+OPA275)
- and for line-out "only" at 1 postion = AD8056

So that is very helpful for me and my questions, which i have post in the "Op-Amps Question" thread , because i asked which op-amp i can use to change instead of OPA275 (i use headphone only). In this thread "EVGATech_LeeM" have posted some op-amps to change AD8056. So now i can begin with the AD8056 ....

I'll see if I can get you a little more detailed answer, but yes, you can modify the headphone through both op-amps.

I have dual Burson V5i op amps. According to Burson I could use one to replace the headphone OP275 but I am unsure of the AD8056. The V5i is a substitute for the AD8066 but the AD8056 is not mentioned. I note the AD8056 is actually a mono amp whereas given the EVGA diagram of the card you would expect a stereo device like the AD8066.

Update: burson replied I could use both, one for headphone the other for line. I installed them and fiound the improvement well worth the investment. So much so that I have now disconnected my topping d50.

I hate to revive such an old thread, but I think this is the answer I was looking for?  I was wanting to use the Burson V5i's in the Nu audio, and this is saying its fine, no?
The op amp is listed as 'BURSON AUDIO SUPREME SOUND OPAMP V5i Dual OPA Hybrid DIP8 (Unit)'.

Been a long time since I had a dedicated Sound Blaster card. I feel most high end motherboards nowadays have pretty good on board setups but maybe entry level motherboards could benefit from this boost to the audio department.

If you wanna get a good quality audio, yes, there is a need. But an external DAC/AMP combo is a preffered way of building such an audio system these days.

i absolutely LOVE this card!!! sounds amazing and i have no issues whatsoever, other than EqualizerAPO which was easily fixed by disabling startup of EVGA_NahimicAPI
i hear every little detail that my headphones are capable of reproducing (Sennheiser HD 559, saving to get HD 599) the bass is super tight and punchy, it doesnt bleed into the mids thus allowing more details to be heard.
i paid $250 (CDN) after tax and it was worth every penny.

good job EVGA at making a worthwhile product in a dead market *clapping*
it would be cool to see an external version made too for the complainers :P

i have noticed a very small interference in my headphones when i have the software volume at a certain point, though i only hear it when under heavy GPU load and i have my audio muted, the sound goes away though if you leave your system volume at max and just control headphone software volume. so now for a tiny complaint: i would like to have the ability to control the software volume via my keyboard media keys instead of the hardware volume, make this a choice not a forced though

I can compare NU to Asus Strix Soar, I like NU more, sound is lively, and clean, and no hiss, no interference, I am looking to sell Strix Soar soon. Headphones/set used: game zero, akg k702 (the best experience was with k702), that's when using headphones in back panel.

Only one problem, when i used headphones in front jacks panel, i had hissing when no audio playing, and mouse movements translated into screeching sound in headphones, any way to remove noise from front jack? (internal sound card disabled in bios)

Unfortunately, you might have to try a little testing to see if the issues are with the front panel headers on the card side, or maybe some wiring issues or port issues on your case.
