I also want to know. How low can the fan go for the ACX 1.0 fans ? I hope we can at least lower it to 25%.

hoping doesn't help at all, the first post states it clearly. Please note the 0% fan feature is ONLY for ACX 2.0 versions, as the fan motor in ACX 1.0 is not able to support 0% mode. For ACX 1.0 versions, the update (when available) will fine tune the fan performance and provide better acoustics overall.

This makes it even worse that early adopters have to wait the longest. Get your priorities straight EVGA.

EVGA_JacobF 980 ACX2's already have this.
Does the logo on the 970 ACX 2.0 cards light up as it does on the 980? Are there any differences between the SC, SSC and FTW models apart from clocks? I'm getting 2 cards for SLI and would really appreciate the help.

Hi Guys, I read in the Anandtech review that the TDP is a real issue when trying to maintain the "out of the box" (turbo) clocksspeed: Despite not being temperature limited, what we can see right away is that regardless of the clock speed settings it uses, the GTX 970 FTW is TDP limited under all scenarios. At no point in time are we able to maintain the card’s top boost bin, and instead the card spends its time fluctuating between the boost bins it can hold while maintaining power consumption of 145W. The actual drop off from the maximum boost bin depends heavily on the game; some games average clock speeds close to the maximum, while others have to pull way back.
Overall the GTX 970 FTW is a bit more TDP limited in its factory overclocked FTW configuration than its reference clocked configuration, as higher clock speeds draw greater power levels even though voltages are constant. Otherwise we find that in the FTW configuration the card is on average clocked 138MHz higher than the reference configuration, which isn’t quite as high as the 166-189MHz difference in their official specifications. In other words, the FTW’s performance advantage is equivalent to a 140MHz overclock. With Furmark it dropped to 912Mhz, same as the stock GTX970. Will there be a possibility to increase the powerdraw in the future (new Bios) ? cheerz

Great thanks! But i'm not sure i'll install this. I have a custom fan profile where it spins at 20% until 40C and then gradually goes from 30% to 50%... It's quieter than my Gigabyte HD 7950 Windforce 3. Might still install it sometime though just for the sake of it.

Logo only lights up on GTX 980 ACX2.0 cards. On 970, the biggest difference on FTW will be the cooler, it is a much different design, around 4C cooler.

Just got my card today, going to be doing the setup tonight. Going to guess that the card didn't ship with the new BIOS. Is there a proper procedure for flashing this on a new card? My guess for now is: - Uninstall all old drivers
- Install new card
- Boot up system
- Flash BIOS
- Reboot system
- Install drivers
Is that an accurate procedure, or should I change something in there?

If the 1.0 cannot do 0% fan speed, what can it actually go down too? At idle mine is sitting at 35% which is about 1350RPM and I can definitely hear it so would really like it to be quieter!

My current eVGA GTX 570HD is 40% (1860 RPM). Low noise compared to CPU and case coolers, but this card uses only one fan. Perhaps making 970 ACX 1.0 go down to 20% speed?

I don't think there's any use in speculating. Right now a 970 ACX 1.0 not beeing able to run at 0% is nothing more than a rumor set up by somebody in this thread. The best bet is to wait for a new bios. Give em some time, they'll figure something out. (would be nice to get some updates on the status though) I don't see why it shouldn't go down to 0% any more than any other card. If the GPU gets too hot (dunno, maybe +90°C or something) it either shuts down or the fans will kick in as last resort. At least that's how I'd program it into a bios Edit: woops, I missed the statement in the first post from EVGA JacobF. The ACX 1.0 fan really DOESN'T support 0% speed. Well then... carry on speculating, I guess.

Do I really need this? 30% idle fan speed keeps my GPU temps at around 35°C, but 0% fan speed will raise my idle GPU temps to around 55°C and will probably also raise the temps of the other components, including the CPU. At 30%, my case fan running at high speed drowns out the GPU fan speed and the overall noise is audible, but not loud enough to be a nuisance. (I wear my noise-cancelling headset while gaming.)

I don't know if it's because it's a little colder in my PC room but in Quiet Mode (Precision X) my GPU runs at 26C...can't hear the fan over my CoolerMaster 212 EVO cpu heatsink. Even when I game the fan goes up to 40% (can be wrong on this) and I faintly hear it...pretty pleased with the "false" ACX 2.0 on the SSC version of the 970. Apart from the coil whine in certain games the card is pretty silent. I'm still stepping up for the FTW though :)

Technically the fan supports 0% just fine (it stops when your computer is off after all!), it's starting up from 0% that's the issue (and why most fans run at max speed at startup before settling down). Even if they state that it doesn't support 0%, it doesn't mean it's the fan itself that's incapable, Asus's regular 770 and Strix versions both used the same core fan components with different blades, could be a controller/ fan power supply issue. banzaigtv Do I really need this? 30% idle fan speed keeps my GPU temps at around 35°C, but 0% fan speed will raise my idle GPU temps to around 55°C and will probably also raise the temps of the other components, including the CPU. One nice thing about 0% idle speed is that you don't have to worry so much about dust sticking to the bottom of the fan! In my workstation(/play station) not having to remove the system for monthly cleaning would be amazing, since it's not fun to remove that beast from the cramped space it is in. If they can get the ACX1.0 to hit 20% when idle, I would be more than happy though, it would put the noise at the same level as my harddisks and quiet enough that closing the front panel on my case would render it virtually silent.

Of course the fan is 0% when the computer is off. The fan driver is switched off completely. But should the fan be unable to start at low % (say 5%) the GPU would get warmer until a higher fan speed would kick in and finally start the fan. Comming from a higher fan speed would not be a problem then. I have the same issue with my 14cm CPU fan. Mabye the fan driver onboard does not support a 0% pwm duty cycle? Or maybe the fan motor will not work with such low rpm? However, if it does, then I really can't see a reason not to be able to set the fan speed to zero. Everything else but pure hardware incapability of the fan driver or fan motor would be doable by BOIS code. Like you already mentioned, one could program a kick-start loop (e.g. fan set-point = 5%; if rpm=0 then set-point =30% for 1 sec then fan set-point = 5%). The same goes to overheating-safety should the fan fail or rpm be too low (if temp > 85°C then set-point=[some high number]%) Or am I overlooking something?

I just put a little more thought to this... 4-pin controlled fans have the driver insider the fan. So the GPU board gives out supply, and a pwm signal. The fan driver uses the pwm info to drive the fan. So technically, the Bios could send a 0% PWM duty cycle. So the problem must be the ACX1.0 fan itself. The fan motor is probably a 2 pole (brushless DC) motor. The trouble with 2 pole (single phase) motors is that the fan could start turning in the wrong direction. The ACX2.0 fans are different. They have more blades (11 instead of 9 on the ACX1.0) this means less rpm (but more torque) for the same amount of air, so this could be a 4-pole motor. In any case it's a different fan driver and fan motor that simply IS able to handle low rpm. So, we only need the ACX2.0 fans on my ACX1.0 cooler... So, how about that ACX1.0 to ACX2.0 cooler exchange program I've heard rumors about? :-)

Not actually sure what the internals of the old Power Logic fans are, that company is a fairly standard garbage dump of chinese with some english specifications here and there. No information on anything other than power draw and flow vs pressure. New motors are supposed to be three phase (which means better sensing and startup characteristics than two phase/ shaded pole normally used in these fans), but that doesn't mean you can't jump-start older motors with tuned startup parameters. In fact, some of the chatter on silent PC review is saying the STRIX has a minimum duty cycle of 32% and a minimum startup of 36%, which if true means the current ACX 1.0 motors may be capable of a similar tuned startup with non-smooth fan speed increase at first (boost to minimum startup speed until it's above the minimum continuous speed, apply hysteresis curve when below the minimum startup speed to prevent excessive start-stop cycles). Cooler exchange would be the best way to go though, less chance of something failing.

eslowneyQuestion: can I perform a BIOS update from Linux? I don't have a Windows license. I doubt it. The firmware file is embedded in the flashing tool, which is a Windows binary that needs Windows NT kernel interfaces to directly address the firmware ROM on the card, so WINE wont be an option. You can always download a Windows 8.1 trial ISO to install on another drive, even if that's a USB thumb stick, that may work, as long as it matches the storage requirements. Then flash the card, and reconnect your Linux drive back again.

When can we expect the BIOS update for 04G-P4-0974-KR models? I have this model in my Alienware x51 HTPC and the 35% idle speed fan is annoying when watching a movie or surfing the web, like right now. Also, Precision X (v16) doesn't seem to be able to control my 970's fan speeds at all. I tried using it to crank them up and down, and it does nothing.
