ok.sorry.I am new to this forum so it will take some time before I get to know my way around.thank you.

Hey Robert! I have the GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0 and I love the card.  It's quiet (no firmware update), runs cool (24-26 idle / 62-68 full load) and performs like a champ.  Unfortunately I have coil whine.  Not severe but it's there, audible in games and even more when I use DSR (Dynamic Super resolution, a nVidia feature that upscale resolutions which is awesome).  The whine is audible mainly in benches like Valley 1.0 and 3DMark Firetrike Extreme.  In games I can hear it to.  I play lots of Diablo 3, WoW, Skyrim and I hear it, its a constant whining, sometimes more than others.  But in some other games I don't hear a thing, games like Civ Beyond Earth and the card don't whine at all.

It's the luck of the draw since I hear people that don't have the banshee cry.  And the whine is present in all brands, from ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, Palit, etc.  It's part of the design of the 970 and not brand locked.

So it's a guess really but that shouldn't stop you from buying the 970 and EVGA is one great brand to buy with their Step-Up program, awesome customer service and a free backplate (you'll have to check on that one cause i'm not 100% sure it's still available).

Good luck and have fun!

Download links from the OP are not working...

Also,  is there a way to check what BIOS is currently installed?  I just rec'd my 970 FTW and would like to check the BIOS version before actually proceeding with the update.
At the moment; Windows is reporting the GPU's BIOS version as :  84.4.1f.0.75

Download GPU-Z and check there - mine is v1.1 now and GPU-Z shows bios version 84.04.1F.00.72 on an SC, but I assume this will be different for you on the FTW.
In Precision X if you can't set the fan below 35% then you don't have the new bios though.

I currently have a 2975 ( SSC ) and it OC's in Precision X easily to the same core speed as the 2978 ( FTW ). Power and temp are still set to 100/80 and it runs fine under full load. My question is, since I want to purchase a second 970 and want to get the FTW model can I flash my existing 2975 with the 2978 bios so that they will match at the higher speed?

Just received my FTWs and they both show 84.04.1F.00.75 and the fans are not moving. Also the box has a piece of paper saying that they are not supposed to move below a specific temp. Guess I already have the update.

I did the update for  my 970 FTW. The card is fanless now, but it doesn´t go back into fanless mode after I played a game. The temp goes down to 30°C-40°C, but the fans stay at high rpm. I can´t even reduce rpm in precisionx. After reboot or standby it´s fanless again.
Any clues?

@grinsk3ks-- ran into the same thing after updating Precision to 5.2.4; looks like the update resets the custom fan curve settings to have a 30% minimum fan speed, but that only seems to take effect once the card heats up enough that the next temperature setpoint gets tripped.  However, once the fan is going, even after the card cools down the minimum speed set in Precision is now in effect and the fans won't stop again.

I had to go back and hit "Fan Curve" button on left side of Precision; re-enable "Enable Automatic Fan Control", and then re-enter my custom fan curve:

0% speed until 49C; 20% at 51C; 40% at 79C; 60% at 81C

GPU fans stay off for normal desktop stuff.  For older games, 20% fan is enough that the temps never go above low 50s, but Skyrim and SoM and such get more cooling as they need it.

The fan settings don´t effect the fan at all. It doesn´t change, even when I set custom fan curve. The fan goes to max rpm and stays there no matter what.

If you just drag the big fan speed slider and hit "Apply" in Precision, it doesn't change the fans at all?

Is the "Auto" radio button below the "fan curve" on or off?  Try toggling that....

I tried that, but I just noticed that its only 1 of the fans. I have to check if the 2nd one works at all.

Just received my 970 SC ACX 2.0 from Newegg and it has the old firmware. Just a heads up as there are still older units in the wild.

Hello friends,

I'm new to this forum. My card is an EVGA GTX 970 (part # 04G-P4-2977-KR)
Is there any BIOS update for this card? Because this card is not mentioned in the OP.

Thanks.

Greetings,
I have 04G-P4-2978-KR on its way to me.  It's a v2 (obviously), but how do I know if it needs the v1.1 BIOS update?  In the past, FW update posts typically say if your FW is this rev or earlier you need the update, if its xxx or later you already have it.  Did I miss something?

Thanks,

If you just purchased it, then you do not need to apply the update.

Sounds good as I doubt vendors such as Amazon or Newegg are sitting on older stock.  Had to wait a few days for shipment as Black Thursday  afternoon and Cyber Monday cleaned everyone out.  Even Fry's and Central Computer (bay area) didn't have stock.

Jacob, as always thanks for your help.

I tried the stock bio's that came with my new card I bought a week ago. Didn't work on setting the bio's to 2 for the fans not to kick on until 60'C . Flashed it and still with bio's 2 it doesn't turn the fans off...

I'm confused. :X

I have a GTX 970 (04G-P4-1970-KR) - at idle my fan is very noisy at ~1200 rpm - Any chance I can upgrade the firmware? I am on 84.04.1F.00.70

I just upgraded my case fans. All the noise is coming from the GPU-fan now :P

AFAIK this card hasn't receive any updates yet.
Strangely, the BIOS version and the UEFI version of this card's ROM is higher than the one in the 1.1 updates.

After installing the new firmware, the fan does not appear to kick in until ~65c. I'm a bit of a baby when it comes to temps, and feel uncomfortable having my card hit 80c. The card seems to settle at ~75c at 75% load, with the fan automatically at 32%

Is all of this normal? Is 80c even an issue for these cards?
