Hello, I have two questions: One, where can I tell my current firmware version and how do I know if it is upto date. Two, where can I get the BIOS I had on my last card before RMA that had 0%fan at idle and ~197mhz throttle when idle. This new card throttles at ~907 and its really irritating and it also never has the fans turn off. Note: I can see my "BIOS Version" is 84.04.1F.00.70 but I don't know what to compare because firmware 1.1 doesn't relate in any way.

Lovely, this update bricked my 04G-P4-2974-KR. Looking forward to my RMA call to support. I have water cooling and dead silence at idle, so I actually had a reason to want this update. For anyone that isn't going to benefit from the update, obviously I recommend that you don't risk it, obviously.

The update didn't come out in 2015..its old.. All new units already have this update and beyond... EVGA_JacobF Re: EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0 Firmware Update v1.1 Friday, December 05, 2014 1:47 PM (permalink)
If you just purchased it, then you do not need to apply the update.

Don't be too discouraged bud. Here is what may work for you or anyone else that has bricked their video cards by applying this update on newer cards. ****REQUIRES SYSTEM WITH INTEGRATED GRAPHICS CARD **** 1. Boot up your computer using your integrated adapter hooked up to your monitor. (On many systems if you have an integrated and additional video card, you may have to clear the CMOS to reset your BIOS settings to default so your Integrated adapter will be primary again, as it may not activate the integrated adapter otherwise). This usually accomplished by crossing two specific pins on your motherboard. 2. Take note of the shipped bios version of your card (it is imprinted on the back of the card). 3. Do a search for that particular bios on techpowerup's vga bios page, I can't link it, so google techpowerup vga bios :) 4. Download the exact bios that matches your cards version from the list. 5. Download the nvflash program from this website as well, save and extract this in the same location. *****MAKE SURE NO NVIDIA DRIVER IS INSTALLED, IF THERE IS ONE, DISABLE IT IN DEVICE MANAGER BEFORE CONTINUING, BUT DON'T REBOOT***** 6. Run command prompt as an administrator and navigate to the directory you put your nvflash.exe file and your ROM file. 7. Type nvflash --list and see what index your card is identified as. 8. To flash your corrected ROM, Type nvflash --index=x bios.rom (where x = the index of your card) 9. Follow the prompts for flashing your BIOS 10. If you get a message saying there is a pci subsystem id mismatch, use the -6 command to ignore the mismatch. nvflash --index=x -6 bios.rom 11. If everything went fine, it should tell you that your bios old bios was rewritten to the new bios and you should be good to go. ** Note: on some systems you may have to reboot quick with your monitor still plugged into the integrated adapter and go back into bios and change your video primary boot settings back to PEG (PCI Express Graphics) before plugging your monitor back into your card.** *** I assume no responsibility for these instructions, except to say that they have worked on many different occasions and stand a very good chance of unbricking your card ***

I wouldn't trust the GPU-Z BIOS database quite yet-- they seem to have swapped the device IDs for the GTX 970 SC (ie, your 04G-P4-2974-KR) and the SSC (04G-P4-2975-KR). If your fans turn off when the card is idle (modulo Precision setting or other fan utilities), you've got the newer BIOS version. For example, I have BIOS 84.04.1F.00.72 on a 2975 which has device ID of 10DE 13C2 and my GPU clock defaults to 1190 MHz, but they list 1165 MHz here:

My graphics card is having this problem. = ( When this happens I have to take the pci express slot and colocala again several times to work. Already tested on another computer and the problem continues. Problem:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSSlMQM9KWIlike a new video card, perhaps a gtx 980, I am disappointed with the gtx 970.

I tried updating my EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0, Part Number :04G-P4-2974-KR and my card would no longer boot, and I didn't have a backup of the original BIOS. I found the original BIOS on TechPowerUp 84.04.36.00.70, which is apparently a SSC BIOS, for an SC card. After trying to flash back to that BIOS from TechPowerUp, the GPU crashes on everything. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this, or does anyone have the above BIOS?

hi I have installed the firmware 04g-p4-2978-kr on my new card but now I cannot boot my PC. looked into the card in menu slots but on further inspection the card has the p/n's on it 04g-p4-2978-kr and also 04g-p4-2978-b6 so I'm now concerned, 1 I have killed the card with the update, 2 the card i have been sold is a fake. any assistance would be welcome. fixed it by finding original bios version off the board and flashed it.

This is why I'm not a fan of the ACX setups, I'm puzzled to why eVGA still has issues. Seen less BS with MSI Gamer, Gigabyte/Asus dual fan set ups...

Hello, I bought 970GTX SC 2.0 ACX, didnt got any drivers and turned on the firmware update, everything seems to complete but after restart i got black screen, cant see anything, even motherboard infos. The screen seems.to catch the graphic card(green light near power button) but then goes into sleep mode... Any help? Im soo god damned angry. Tried to put card in another PC - same situation. Also tried to connect to dvi monitor(mine is hdmi) and there's a same result, except the info after screen goes to sleep mode - something about changing resolution to 1280x1024 - so i tried set this resolution with my old card but doesnt help. My motherboard is asus maximus iv extreme z + i7 2600. Regards, Sheyy

This firmware is not necessary for any card purchased in 2015. This firmware came out in October of 2014 for the original release cards that came out in September and early October of 2014. All cards going forward should have this already, as Jacob says in his orginal post: "This update will be applied to new cards going forward, so in the near future this update will not be necessary to apply as most if not all cards will have it already. Please make sure to follow the below steps carefully, step 2 and 3 are very important." If you flash this firmware, you're likely writing an older firmware to your card than was already on it, and you may brick the card. If this happens, there are a few options. If you have a dual BIOS card, you can boot from the second firmware, get to Windows, then flash your stock firmware back using NVFlash if you backed up your original firmware. If you have access to a second video card, you can also boot with this card and use NVFlash to flash the stock firmware to your 970. Or, if you didn't back up your firmware before flashing we can assist you with an RMA to replace the card by contacting support at support@evga.com or 888-881-3842.

When will there be an update for the 970 FTW to get a proper power limit? 187 watts doesn't even come close to cutting it.

EVGA_JacobF UPDATE: This firmware has already been pre-applied to all GTX 970's for 8+ months, and is no longer available for download.
Could you please send a version of the current 970ftw bios, or a bios that will work with the card and possibly make it keep from idleing? if you could mail it to me that would be great, since it seems to be quite buggy. Thank you/ Jonas
