As some of you may remember I am modifying the Lian Li PC-A71F with the Mountain Mods HPTX motherboard tray to build my SR-2 rig.

Any updates? Did you finish your mod? I too have a PC-A71F, and I like its styling better than all the HPTX cases, which makes it all the more infuriating to have to shell out $400+ for them. It seems like with a couple of tweaks the SR-2 should fit in this thing. In fact, the mobo is "in" the case now, just not quite fitting the holes.

@Qslvr: I too bought a PC-A71F and found the SR-2 doesn't fit. It seems ridiculous to me to pay $80 for a Mountain Mods motherboard tray when the case has one that fits MOST holes. From my assessment, it looked like even after removing the bottom cross bar, the motherboard plate has a bottom "lip" that would not allow the SR-2 to sit flush, and even if it sat flush, the PCI slots didn't seem to fit the case openings. Is this not true? I'd love to use this beautiful case even if I don't get to use all 8 slots.

If anyone is interested, I managed to fit my SR-2 into a Lian-Li PC-71 with a few small easy mods (I have no practical skills in life).  It looks like it will fit 3 VGA if you desire, and the fourth could be done with further work.  Fancy cooling and other stuff I don't know about, I'm happy running with quiet air coolers.  It's not nearly as pretty as some of the mods people are making, but it is quick.

I went the 71 route as I already had the case, it looks beautiful and the pc-80 which officially supports the board is ugly, $100+ more expensive in Aus and often a few weeks between order and delivery.  Mountain Mods and other brands are non-existent over here (as far as I know).

The trick to fitting is to remove the bottom case cross bar which is L shaped and prevents the motherboard being fitted to the plate.  The six rivets that hold this bar to the front/back of the case and the plate can be removed easily with a drill.  I then stood the bar near vertically behind the motherboard plate to provide it some support push support (note the plate is still attached to the case on two sides (top and back) with multiple screws and rivets).  This bar is longer than the case height so 'friction' joints can be used when standing it up.  A bit of string ties it nicely through holes in the plate and the now vertical bar to provide pull support, or if want you could put through a bolt and nut after making a hole with a drill and let it take some motherboard weight through shear.  Mod can be completely undone by replacing the drilled out rivets with some small nuts and bolts from the hardware store.

A better option, but more work, would be too remount the bar horizontally across the case, but down at the base where the SR-2 hangs to.  A new motherboard plate would go great too, but it’s all too much work for me.

Have tried to upload picture but loader isn't working for me today. (firefox 3.6.10,  pic size <500kB)
Edit:  Reboot, retry, it's the windows way

@bucyrus5000 and qslvr:

Can you guys please post pics of your PC-A71F mods? I'm looking for ideas on how to squeeze my SR-2 into my brand-new A71F.

Thanks in advance.

Nearly any case out there will fit an SR-2 w/ modifications. I think this thread is for those who can fit them out of box w/o modifcations.

Re:EVGA Classified SR-2 Compatible Chassis 2011/05/17 16:55:32 (permalink)
Hi
I havent posted here before but I am trying to get a pattern for the screw holes for the sr-2 motherboard. I am doing a from scratch case mod with a Star Trek theme and would like to get a pattern for mounting the board. This case is going to be quite large with 5 200 mm fans just for starters with about 8 fans total, lots of led's and with watercooling, 2 ,1000 watt power supplys. etc. I am currently running an i7 950 with an H70 water cooler, nVidia GTX 550 Ti, 12 gigs of ram, 4 terabytes, 2 dvd recorders, 3 HP 22" HDMI monitors, 1000 watt power supply, Hauppauge TV card, Soundblaster extreme gamer sound card. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I Have 2 Thermaltake Xasier VI 4000 cases and when I measure the board tray, it is 16 inches wide and 14 and 1/4 deep. So how come a 15 by 13.6 board cant be made to fit? I removed the 2 bottom hdd cages when I got it and have only one fan down there. As for quad sli, not going to happen, Just sli with 2 cards is all I need. And it has ten slots. It also has enough room under the case to move the fan outside and it would be hidden from view. This case is huge and their seems more than enough room. I am only asking as I have an SR-2 and 2 Xeons on the way. Or am I missing something?
Present config:
Xasier VI 4000 case
10 fans
Asus Rampsge III Formula Board
i7 950
H70 water cooler
12 gigs XMP DDR3 ram
1000 watt power supply
4 terabytes hdd's
Soundblaster Extreme gamer sound card
2 dvd recorders
Hauppage 1850 tv tuner card
nVidia GTX 550 Ti 1 gig
nVidia GTX 275 1 gig for 3rd monitor
3 HP HDMI w2207 monitors
Wacom 3 tablet

www.newegg.com and www.microcenter.com have both started carrying the Xigmatek Elysium case.  Newegg just put them up today and microcenter put them up saturday.

Microcenter has them for about $5 USD less than newegg and the shipping is also cheaper from microcenter.  Newegg does have two options, both windowed one black and one black with silver trim.  Microcenter only has one, windowed all black.  This case is made for the SR-2 specifically and has 10 expansion slots for those who dont know already and for the price it looks to be a great deal.  I already ordered mine ;)

BTW at $214 it is the cheapest made to fit option for the SR-2 I have been able to find and it can hold 2 power supplies and comes ready for water cooling in a big way.

You know what I like about all of this? I've read where some people want/pay as much as $700.00 for a custom made case when All it is is a simple box with brackets, shelves & bay's! CrAzY   I got a friend with a homemade all SOLID OAK CASE similar to a mountain & about $400 cheaper! It looks great to me but I guess it's all in what one wants! WeIrD :-)

Here is one more. Moded!. Thermaltake Armor+ with TT Big Water 760IS for cooling. I am currently waiting for Hydro X590 from EVGA to proceed with a second 760IS. Mods required: some metal cutting and polishing. Result: looks like an item from a factory floor. Damn I am good with tools
To be honest Lian chassis look like cheap black coffins, no offence to current owners
