I kinda figured. Silverstone makes beautiful cases for conventional computers. Like the rest of the industry they see the SR-2 as a passing fad.

So wish me luck with my heavy modifications to my Lian Li case.

Re:EVGA Classified SR-2 Compatible Chassis 2010/11/11 05:53:58 (permalink)
Had just assembled mine on the 2120. Just to point out some minor design flaw.
Here's the skeleton view with mobo tray removed, left and right side panel removed:

Yeah it on top of the Ikea office table and damn heavy. After flipping it over and back again a few time, my back aches. This is not the full black but just the outside. Waited 1.5mths for this before my built began yesterday.
The PCI device extender-holder can be removed actually but the entire built bearing 23+/- kg need it for structural purpose. I put it back of course and that the cables can run under it too.

Here's a look at the mobo tray:

11 slots supporting up to 4xSLI/Xfire. A good design for those cable outlets to be protected from sharp edges using plastic shealth.

The SR2 on the mobo tray:

Slotted in the XFX Radeon 5970:

Slide in the tray and guess what? Design flaw #1:

Just a little bit more about 10mm, I could have push the mobo tray all the way in if not for the internal 140mm fan blocking the way. Here comes the beauty of the flaw.

See a close up look. The 24pin ATX socket and IDE socket hitting the fan:

My case is still vertically upright so here's how it looks like. And I thought the designer would have his hand on a piece of SR2 and tested it! I am not ready to sacrifice the 140mm fan..

The solution, flip the fan mount horizontally:
From -

Which you see, the top L-plate is longer than the lower L-plate. Meaning, the mount pushes the fan further towards the rear of the case.
To -

And by flipping it over, we literally pull the fan towards the front and allow the mobo to come in more without changing to smaller fan. However, if you are still running IDE devices, then this will not save you from unblocking the IDE socket. I do not have any IDE devices.
Another sacrifice if you do this, you see that thumb screw locking the 3.5" bay? You will have to forego the thumbscrews (2 of them) and change it to normal hex-head screw use to secure HDDs. Here's how it will look on the tight space:

If you do not change away the thumb-screw, your 140mm fan blade will get caught.

Another issue after moving forward the fan, the ATX connector will block the fan body from being pushed into the self-locking mount/key-hole. To solve that, I shave away a part of the corner of the fan body:

To this:

You can do this easily with an 18mm penknife, shave, not saw. After that, it will sit into the fan mount, lock into the key-hole, all nicely without hindering the ATX connector:

But still, this is no solution for those who need to use the IDE socket badly.

Another flaw I think it could be, or may be not, just need someone to confirm for me.. There's this transistor located after the PCI slot 1 in the picture here:

Now question is, is it come like that, that it is bend towards 2 o'clock? This picture was taken after realising I have to fit on a back plate when using Corsair H50 CPU water-cooler, which means I have to remove the assembly including the GPU on slot 1 and turn the mobo over. I thougt the Radeon caused the transistor to bend like that. Anyone?

The above is meant to share with you my experience working on the Lian Li PC-2120 casing.
I have yet to get the system fire up successfully because of PSU issue.
PSU: Silverstone Zeus ZM1200 (1200W).
If you are not intending to use high end GPU, I think the PSU works fine. As for mine, it did not even shown any thing on screen after power ON. I brough the GPU back to local service center and tested it on the spot with their 850W PSU, the screen shown POST all the way to Windows started and ran FurMark very well. So I guess the 1200W is not just about the power but the design of the 12V rail. It does have the option to switch from 6x12V rail and single 12V rail but that doesn't help either.
I tried disabling one CPU and unplugged the 8pin and 6pin to that CPU, I finally heard the roar of the Radeon's fan which I did not notice it was that loud before that. It just means that the Radeon was not even power up fully before, although I saw some green LED lights inside those black back plate.

Gotta source for a approved PSU for Radeon 5970 AND SR2.. And man, using those 2xwater coolers took up 2x3-pins for the fan from the mobo and 2x3pins for the pump, leaving little for those 4x140mm fans and 1x120mm rear fan.

Yeah Lian-Li warns you that you'd have to remove that 140mm fan but I guess you don't with a bit of work.  A simpler solution would be to zip tie the fan to the other side of the HDD cage.

What ram did you end up using? I bought 24 gb of mushkin enhanced silverline. Does your 5970 have displayport? I am running a 4890 with display port but the slots don't line up exactly and it covers part of the displayport. I had to leave the card unscrewed to get good enough clearance. Will have to try the fan trick on the 2120.

Gunner: Oh no, I didn't hear or read from Lian Li. I wanted something else from SilverStone but it wasn't available here and since 2120 is a new model for HPTX, I thought it must fit without issue.  My bad. But to cable-tie to the 3.5" bay, good if you do not have more drives.

Heh we got the same 24Gb Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Triple channel.
Yes there's a display port. I also have a question on this, the card came with a mini display port to HDMI plug. Damn, I have already got my 3 new monitors but all 3 are DVI, none HDMI. So can I just plug one of those mini display to DVI plug like those offered for 5970 Limited Eyefinity 6?

V2120 does NOT fit SR-2. Just barely. Epic fail for Lian Li.

This whole thing about not having many choices of cases for the SR-2 is not really a big problem. It's an opportunity to release your inner computer enthusiast and be creative. Express yourself. Not having cases readily fit to carry the SR-2 is a dilemma we should embrace.

I just got my SR-2 and a Lian Li A71F. The SR-2 is absurd! When I pick up an ATX or EATX mobo, I say to myself, "If I threw this thing at someone I could probably scratch them." When I picked up the SR-2 I said to myself, "Holy @#$%, this thing is heavy. If I threw this thing at someone It will probably kill them!" So I Started measuring the Lian Li to finalize my plans to modify the case. It will work, but wow am I going to be working for a while. It will keep me out of trouble and allow me to make a case that is unique. I'm going to love it. I already have scratches on my hands and it feels great.

I'm currently making a knex tech-station style case around a template I made.  It will probably not be a permanent solution though.

After being disappointed with the lack of cases out there I've decided to just make my own bench table. I've ordered the Mountain Mods HPTX motherboard tray and 3 sheets of 480mm x 480mm acrylic. Should be under $150 in supplies and shipping when all is done.

The LittleDevil cases look amazing, but it will be close to $750CAD to get one up here

EVGA SR-2 * (2) E5645 @ 3.7GHz * 6GB DDR3 * GT210 * 1000W Antec

That is why I'm modifying a Lian Li PC-A71F. It cost me 200 bucks plus a MM HPTX mobo tray (another 80 bucks). Still it's cheaper than buying any of the custom cases or the Lian Li 2010. Modifying a case is the way to go, but paying for a custom or modified case will cost lots. Even if you guys dread the prospect of modifying a case yourself, consider the costs; a case made to fit the SR-2 will cost 450 USD and up, modifying a case yourself will cost 200ish for the case, 80ish for the mobo tray, and 50ish for supplies (assuming you already have a drill, dremel, and jig saw). If you do it right it will look better than factory new, and if you do it halfassed it will probably still get the job done.

People are complaining because it costs so much money and there are these minor inconveniences that shouldn't happen for that much cash.

I don't like the 2010 because it looks like the World Trade Center.

Don't get me worng that the Lian Li company is great but V2120 is just bad execution to due to poor design, why they put the 140mm fan in the first place, simply I want it attached but no choice for removing it (both fan and vertical wall) to free up some space for SR-2. Hence why I paid too much for it. I like the PCI holder to hold the video cards, again, it's the money I paid for it.

Beside I'm getting the custom case and I will sell my V2120S soon.

ya i suppose when u pay that much money u expect alot in the design me unfortunently living a canada doesnt give me many options on cases and the lian li is the one i could get plus it was a big concern for me to get a case that i know ill fit the sr 2 without having to mod everything wich is why i kinda went with it its not a bad case but its really not worth the 500 bucks i had to fork out for it but again in canada didnt have many options on cases.

That's perfectly understandable. Most folks want a case that fits. If you are happy with what you have then god bless you. Don't let the thread make you feel you bought an uncool case. Lian Li stuff is very cool. I'm really happy with my A71F. I prefer the styling of it to the 2010. My case my choice, same with you (your case your choice).

I like modifying things, it's healthy for me to do it. So, I'm really enjoying this project so far. Just 1 annoyance; FedEx still hasn't delivered my MM HPTX mobo tray. I so badly need it to continue.

Ya ive never really got into heavy modding so for me it was just easier to get a case that i know will fit ill probably change somethings around and make my watercooler fit abit better but i wont go extreme cause ive never really done that kinda thing with modding cases so i do hope though it all works out for you.

  Hi guys,
Had a quick mounting question for my PC-P80 thread here:
  http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=688980
Also as a note, when I unpacked the P80, I noticed they supplied what appears to be small silvery standoffs (maybe aluminum or stainless steel)?.  Normally I've always thought of them having to be brass because of the conductive nature of that but would it still be safe to mount the board with the diagram I gave?
If you need to see a photo of the standoffs, I can provide one (just didn't take one yet).
