I am not a heavy gamer but purchase the GTX 980 SC (04G-P4-2982-KR) at a very good price that I couldn't pass it up. This is my first gaming rig. I am thinking about getting a 144Hz monitor such as the Asus VG248QE or something else that I could get for the low 200s.

I was wondering if the GTX 980 SC by itself can reach 144Hz? Or should I stick with a 60Hz monitor only?

I'm not a serious gamer, heck I am overdoing this computer I am building for my needs but I have foolishly typically paid $1000 for laptops every 4-5 years, so I figured this build I have going should last me much longer than that + be 3x as powerful for essentially the same price ($100-200 more). I'll be playing games like GTA V, racing, sports, metal gear solid, batman and maybe a shooter or two. And I'll rarely play those as I don't have that much of an open schedule to dedicate to video games. But when I do play, I want a great experience.

So I'm wondering if this card can hit 144Hz by itself, and even if it can...is it really worth it?

It honestly depends on the games and resolution.

A lot of games will work at 1080p near 144hz,if you don't put resolution scaling to 200% and such.

There are some games that will absolutely hold the refresh rate down, but a 120-144hz will definitely be worth it.

Depending on the game, game settings, monitor resolution yes.

Thanks for the replies. Well I guess I will go with a 144hz monitor, since it's capable. Thanks again for the input guys!

It depends on the cable, monitor and resolution.

If you have further questions you should post your resolution and which cable type you want to use.
