Hello all,

Today i come cap in hand looking for help.

So a little while a go i noticed that all my monitors would go black while playing Destiny 2, ARMA or anything really, the odd thing was i could continue discord conversations and if i was lucky i could reboot the machine via cmd so i assumed dodgy nvidia driver. I ran DDU in safe mode and cleaned out the drivers and installed clean ones, this made no difference so i assumed an update on Win 11 Pro (was giving it a trial run) was to blame so flattened the machine and reinstalled Win 10 Pro (I use the RDP and Hyper-V features on occasion, not installed/ active at the moment but a nice to have). No difference, it seems to be completely at random but only when running a GPU task i.e a game, during the day it's just a means to VPN to my work machine.

Today I have done the following:-

Format all disks (500GB NVME (OS), 4TB SSD (games), 4TB SSD (Documents, ISOs and such)
Reinstall Win 11 Pro (OS Build 22000.1042)
Latest drivers (GRD and studio tested)
ran SFC /scannow
DISM /restorehealth
Download steam and destiny 2
Event logs show a dwm.exe error roughly at the time the screens go with a warning error just before of "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
Using Appcrashview i can see the following at the rough time:-

explorer.exe  - Black Screen - User reported
svchost.exe   - Black Screen - User reported
dwm.exe       - Black Screen - User reported
werfault.exe  - Hardware fault

No BSOD .dmp files so i'm stumped as to the cause and how to fix.

The system is: -

ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero (latest BIOS)
AMD 3900x (No overclock)
2 x 16GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo
EVGA 3080Ti FTW 3 Ultra with EK water block (front and back blocks and no overclock)

GPU never gets over 60 under load, only thing i have yet to do because i'm a touch lazy and was hoping to eek it out until i replaced the mobo/cpu with a zen4 or 13th gen intel is replace the TIM on the GPU, the GPU was done August 2021 so it's not out of the realms of possibility that the thermal grizzly needs redoing but it would be odd as it seems like a software issue and not a physical but i can't figure it out.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Not a bad idea, remember to use DDU...Are you using a known good cable? I've had black screens before where a cable was flaky.

Always DDU lol ;)

Cables are new DP 1.4 cables which (touch wood) i've never had issues with.

Also it would be odd but not impossible for all 3 cables to go

So far so good, I must have tied my downgrade to Win 10 with a new driver i guess but not 100% so far. Will keep an eye on it

latest W11 22H2 update - cut performance anyways

did you ever install the firmware update on your GPU ?

I see you have had these since Aug 2021 ..... is this a New issue, all of a sudden issue that never happened before?

PSU - brand, part number, Watts & age

Are you only using wires that came with the PSU ?

I had heard 22H2 did a bad thing.

X1 doesn't show an update so unless there is a separate to grab.

Spoke to soon, just died again so tried flipping to HDMI still no image.

Windows in the background is still working (I can run the reboot command and it reboots fine) which leads me to think GPU hardware/software. I've just taken delivery of some new kryonaut so will reapply the TIM :(

It could be one of your hard drives. I would use a different one to install the OS on and only use one for testing.

Did you see this? https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-issues-fix-for-windows-11-22h2-lag-and-stuttering-bugs  With that said, and as weve all been saying for years now, dont install geforce experience and the rest of the garbage that comes in the gpu drivers. Once you DDU you should use nvidiacleanstall to install the driver properly https://www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowerup-nvcleanstall/ and many of your headaches will go away. Besides that, windows 11 has issues of its own and imo its too soon to be using it as a stable, reliable o/s.

@RainStryke
Would be odd especially as event logs point at nv driver kernal but i have SSDs kicking about for test (joys of being the infrastructure engineer who does decommissions, loads of enterprise SSDs for testing!!)

@wmmills
I did go back to Win 10 Pro (i thought i put that in OP but apologies if not) but saw the same issue which lead me to more of a hardware issue. It has been a year since i built it around the 3080ti so plan to pull it apart for cleaning this weekend, i'm hoping it just that i did a poor TIM job that has just started to show issues.

Black screens without a crash could indicate the overcurrent protections on the card are being triggered. You can check what your power supplies +12v is running at. If the +12v rail is too high or too low of a voltage it can cause issues. Instructions can be found HERE.

I did see that but they resulted in Blue screens needing a forced shutdown, mine is Black screen where peripherals and windows still operates I just can't see anything :(

Thanks for this, can confirm 12v rail never budged from 12.152v for the good minute i stared at it lol, But a windows update applied last night so again before i point to much at hardware i'll see what it does tonight.

For me its sort of a mix? Whatever im doing visual wise will freeze, sound keeps going on in the background, game sound usually stops after a few seconds but lets say something like spotify keeps going for quite a while. The length varies a lot, sometimes it last 2 seconds and the pc reboots on its own, or it just keeps going till i reboot it myself.

Not that i can think of, i ran a mem test last night and during the reboot it did an OS update (KB5017321) but nothing more. I'm still going to do a tear down but i'm away this weekend and on a stag do next so will need to wait.

So I got impatient and took off the water block on my GPU, the paste contact was there (not great) but was there, i reapplied and now no display at all *rolls eyes*.
