I am new to the whole temp of GPU and fan curves but with precision x why don't people just leave it on auto? I had mine set to aggressive or quite but just at a temp of 40 the fans were going so I thought that the constant running of fans might kill the life of the card.

Is it okay to just leave it on auto?

Auto is fine, that is what the card was designed with.

Of course you can tune it manually to get better cooling (at the expense of noise) or lower to reduce noise levels.

    Heat kills all electronics.

Most users run the fans to keep GPU cooler to extend the life of the card or stop throttling.

As stated above it is a balancing act as increased fan RPM = more noise.

Besides it is fun to play with.

Is it okay to keep the fans running even when the GPU is idle?

well for the 1070 FYW edition, the second bios seems to keep the fans running at 20% , min, and doesn't look like its possible to drop below that. So the fans are running always, then again the card is about 30 C or abouts.

would be nice to be able to lower the fan RPM a bit more, I guess I could switch back to master.
