Yesterday I had this random line appear across the top of my screen. It didnt span the ENTIRE screen but rather fades out halfway through the top. It persists in BIOS, after driver updates/reverts, updating/reverting windows updates, turning off/back on again, resetting the settings in the monitor itself. All of this points to it being the monitor... yet I had 2 instances where I was able to get it to "go away". Then on another attempt I had removed power from the monitor for about 30 seconds and turned it back on. It was initially gone but came back within 10 seconds after turning on the monitor. Some people have stated that this is a sign of a dying monitor... Have any of you had this? Have you been able to fix it?

This monitor was the initial run of the PG278Q. I ordered it as soon as it came available sooo if it's dying, then I guess it's whatever and semi "expected". If you guys think it's a sign of what's to come... what should I be looking to replace the monitor with? I'm going to be upgrading my Titan X (Pascal) to the RTX 3080 Ti when it comes out, so Im not opposed to 4k gaming now but having said that I worry about having a 4k monitor that's "only" 100hz as the hope would be that the 3080 Ti is baller enough to push past that threshold in 4k in most games.

If this happen regardless of the software running / what is on screen .. & it stationary ... Screen or its controller is failing

I would guess you have tried All input to the Monitor, different cables & GPU outputs already ?

This monitor only has 1 input. Yea I tried different GPU ports and even a different cable. I just find it weird that twice I was able to get the line to go away and then it came back again 10 seconds later? I'm really not sure tbh. It's just so odd. Normally failing monitors have a solid line or pixels and yet this line feathers away halfway across the screen?

Just tried this. Line is persistent through ALL colors. I had my monitor unplugged since last night at 5pm EST and plugged it back in and turned it back on and the line was present on the "Asus Logo" screen prior to it picking up DP. Guess this just further indicates that it's going the way of the dodo... :(

So i guess that puts this conversation to the second part of my original post... what should I do next?

    Budget & Needs vs Wants

Happy @ the current screen size ?

Like or Hate Curved & none traditional extra wide screen ratio monitors ?

Sooo... I don't have a budget per se. I do but I don't. I work from home so having a good screen for work/gaming is invaluable. I've loved 27" but figure if I'm buying a new one I may as well splurge if it checks the boxes.

I expect I'll be buying a 3080 Ti when they hit and I would assume those guys should be able to do more than 100 FPS @ 4k (at least I hope). So having said that I don't want to be stuck at 4k100 but don't want to pay 3500 either for the new 4k144hz Acer X32 even tho that's like the perfect screen for me.

Also don't mind curved. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. Ultrawide wouldn't bother me if it's high refresh rate and not a horrible VA panel.

My problem with pretty much every current 4K ~144Hz is that they have a fan. Pretty sure that I would not like hearing a fan in my monitor. I'm starting to do some looking around for what it seems like you are as well, a good 4K high refresh rate monitor... But, without a fan...

BTW, that does look like your monitor is dying/malfunctioning.

EDIT: I also agree with your post about a 3000 dollar monitor. That seems crazy, especially because they all eventually die and you have to buy another one. I don't want to pay 3000 dollars and have a monitor die just outside of the warranty period.

I grabbed this screen not long ago.  One of the best 27" 4K gaming screen on the planet.  The thing is, I've read rumors that they were in the works on a upgraded version of it and some lower budget models but I wasn't sure when this would happen and didn't want to wait long so I pulled the trigger and haven't looked back since.

The nice thing about this screen is it's not just a great gaming screen but also content creation so it's a mix of goodies hense it's narly price tag.  Their release MSRP was originally $2,000 but has since come down a good some if you can find the right place.

Soooo the question is tho... would I even notice a difference with a 27" 4k vs 27" 1440p other than performance??? Would it make more sense to do a 32"+ 4k?

Do either the X27 or the PG27UQ have haloing? X27 shows "overclockable to 144Hz" does this affect color reproduction or the ability to show HDR Content? The PG27UQ has 144Hz native (supposedly) or is it the same thing where it's a 120Hz native panel that's just been OC'd to 144Hz and thus can affect longevity? In all of my knowledge of hardware, monitors is where I'm lacking so bare with me while I try to learn all this lol.

That's correct.  It only overclocks to 144hz which I don't care since the 2080 Ti won't get you that high on demanding triple A titles like BFV with all the eye candy turned up.

Chroma Subsampling IssuesOf course there is one elephant in the room, and that’s the issue with refresh rates and chroma subsampling. The PG27UQ can only natively support full 4:4:4 RGB sampling at 10-bit HDR at 4K at a maximum refresh rate of 98 Hz. It can also only support 4:4:4 sampling of 8-bit SDR 4K content at 120 Hz. This is entirely down to DisplayPort 1.4’s bandwidth: there simply is not enough bandwidth to display 4:4:4 10-bit 4K content at 144 Hz, don’t blame Asus or AU Optronics for this one, the technology just isn’t there right now.
Now you might recall this monitor is actually a 144 Hz panel, so this throws up a bit of an issue. To achieve 144 Hz through DP 1.4, Asus has resorted to 4:2:2 chroma subsampling for HDR content above 98 Hz, and SDR content above 120 Hz. What 4:2:2 subsampling means is you are getting full 4K luminance resolution, but chrominance resolution is below 4K, approximately 1440p for simplicity’s sake. So for every group of four pixels you are getting 4 luma samples and 2 chroma samples.

    Source

I basically cap my FPS to 98 to get all the bells and whistles since we're limited via DP anyways but I don't mind gaming at 98 as opposed to 120 or 144hz which those updated screens down the pipe might have resolved.

Yes, as going from 1440p to 4k at 27 inches increases ppi. Higher ppi makes for a more crisp image. 108 ppi to 163 ppi. Both have haloing. Both are 120 native, and must be overclocked to 144. I run my monitor in 8-bit full rgb mode @ 120 hz all the time and have no issues with hdr. Using 144 hz does affect color reproduction due to running at a lower chroma setting when using 144. I also choose to stick with 8-bit as most games don't support 10-bit color, and I'd prefer to have the extra refresh rate than be capped to 98 hz.

Get a new monitor board. See how much it cost.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

I have an interesting development this morning. I left the monitor off and unplugged since Saturday morning. When I turned on my machine this morning and subsequently the monitor... the line was in initially gone. About 2 minutes later the line showed up again. I decided remote to a couple of my servers here and noticed that during an RDP session the line flickered in intensity and how far across my screen it was going. I decided to start playing in the control panel again and dropped it from 144Hz to 120Hz. The line got lesser and still flickered a little bit so just for the lulz i dropped it to 100Hz. The line disappeared completely and has now been without the line for a solid 30 minutes. This wasnt an initial behavior a few days ago as I had dropped it to 60Hz and the line more dull in appearance was still present. This also allowed me to notice what appeared to be scan lines had gone from my picture as well. I hadn't quite picked up on the subtle visibility of the lines when I was leaning back in my chair but since I was up close and had been scrutinizing the panel behavior, i noticed that these subtle lines were gone too. Is this a indication of the mainboard going bad or the gsync module? Thanks to Atfrico's suggestion, Ive found both on ebay and am now wondering if I need to wait on getting a new $1200 monitor and just replace the parts inside until there's a clear display winner on the market that doesnt require the price of my first-born.

I switched my monitor back to 144Hz (from the 100hz, to see if the line came back) at 9:07am EST. It's now 12:07pm. The line is no where to be seen? I am seriously so dumbfounded at the moment. Idk if I got lucky and it "fixed itself" or if this is just a fluke and it's coming back later today. I've tried 2 small gaming sessions with no problems. Also the scan lines at 144Hz arent here anymore either.

Funny thing about Gsync. I turned off adaptive sync in my monitor's settings for my new XB253Q GX and my flickering issue seemed to go away, I haven't seen it since. I also turned off Gsync on my other monitor PG279Q that had an issue as well recently and the problem also seems to have went away... Not sure that I ever really had confidence in Nvidia with Gsync. My old PG258Q still has the line down the middle issue and Asus/Nvidia never put together a firmware for my 500 dollar monitor that I bought from them... Yeah, I wouldn't doubt it if your problem is Gsync/Gsync module.

I would see if getting a new certified cable does the trick.  If that doesn't work than yeah, something else is going on but at least you found a temp fix at 100hz.
