Does anyone know if it's needed with the 580's, suposadly they use less power than a 480, and have a voltage limiter, but last I heard the voltage limiter only worked when the firmware, detected certian programs like Furmark, I have two 580's due here monday for a 759. Actualy none of my boards have the molex, so I'm hopeing to get one for a 758, 759, and for a 760.

I'd have it on there, just in case.

My quess would be yes. the 580's are only a few watts lower than the 480's. if you overclock them enough the same result will happen IMO.

I'm quite curious if this will work any any other company's mobo.  A financial opportunity if I ever saw one, lol.

I don't see why they wouldn't but I am sure if using other then an EVGA board you could kiss your warranty goodbye if there was any kind of issue.

Glad I found this thread. I have a 759 and just placed an order for the first of 2 GTX 580's. I have never realy pushed my current set up hard but plan to run the crap out of it when I have both of the 580's in it in a few weeks. Guess I have to be good for a few more weeks.

You know I tested my 24 pin out while running furmark a few weeks ago and mine didn't even get warm so I guess I am lucky on this issue.  Doesn't do me well to know that I bought the top of the line board at the time and it has the potential for this kind of problem though.

Well the Design engineer did increase the pci-e trace size on the boards to accomodate a larger draw, but the issue potentially is to much resistance at the 24pin connector thus causing heating/melting.  In my situation i'm am hoping to qualify for one of the "fixes" and knowing how EVGA does care about it's customers they have independantly it seems came up with this solution to this issue.  I don't see any other MB manufacturers doing anything like this for it's customer base.  If a MB maker tried to cover every "what if" scenario they can forsee they wouldn't stay in business long due to costs on thier products.  I for one am happy to see EVGA do this even though it's really a Nvidia issue at it's core.  Those of us with slightly older MB's without the Molex connector for additional voltage for the PCI-e Lanes this will be a great bit of piece of mind about potential 24 pin meltdowns.

Thanks EVGA coming up with a fix for your customers.

I'm also patiently waiting for this "fix" for my Classified e760 board.  I'm currently running 2 GTX 470's SLI non-overclocked, nevertheless, I'll utilize the added power to the pci-e lanes.  As stated earlier by another poster, EVGA can be commended for taking this upon themselves to develop this "fix."  Personally, I'm to the point of purchasing EVGA products exclusively for myself and my clients.  I have purchased over $65,000 worth of computer components from Newegg.com over the past 8 years, and out of all the companies I've dealt with, EVGA comes out on top when it comes to product and service.  Think about it, it's astounding that EVGA would invest monetary resources in developing a motherboard "fix" in order to make sure a small percentage of its total customer base are satisfied and secure in their purchase.  Would XFX, Asus, or others do the same????  Kudos to EVGA!!

I am glad to hear that the "Molex Mod" is no longer needed.  with two boards burning up due to this "24 Pin Meltdown" thing, I am first in line for the fix!  actually, I had a totall of three e759 burning up with the last catching fire in the mosfet area....flames shot out the back of the case like a jet engine hitting overdrive!

I know that this will go into a PCI-E slot, but will it completely use it, or will it fit around anything else you have in there?

I was just wondering today how they were going to announce it to the EVGA masses.  I mean, what about the people who don't check the forums everyday or even every week?  Some of them will need it as well.

I'm thinking that this card will have to be long enough to reach the back to be secured to the case like a normal card plus reach all of the power fingers in the slot.

MSI MEG Z790 ACE, Intel i9 13900k, G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 32gb 6600, ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 420 ARGB in push/pull, Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC, EVGA Nu Audio, Samsung 990 & 980 Pro's, WD SN850X & Black hdd, FSP Hydro PTH Pro 1350W PS, Windows 11 Professional, Thermaltake Level 20 XT w/Antec Prizm X 120mm argb fans

Re:Are you going to do the MOLEX MOD? e759 / e760 owners Monday, November 22, 2010 1:01 AM (permalink)
so far, no news on the retro-fix for the e759, e760 boards.

I looked through this thread, and I could not find a post regarding how this new Molex Mod might work?  I'm not talking about the Four Pin Molex Mod that would connect to the back of the board's power input pins.  I am talking about EVGA's mod that will add an additional power source to the video cards (THNX EVGA BY-THE-WAY!  WAY TO GO LOOKING OUT FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS!).  is it gonna be a PCI-EX1 type thing?  a PCI EX riser card?  anyone know?  right now, I have EVERY slot occupied w/ three 260s, one razer sound card, one physics card, and one tv tuner.  I know that I'm gonna lose one of these, but which one?

to recap:  the e759 / e760 boards without the additional onboard four pin molex plug are prone to the 24 Pin Meltdown.  speaking from experience x2, there is a possible fire risk with these boards due to the excessive power draw when running TRI SLI and a Physics card.  the 480s were thought to be  the problem; however, I've had the 24 Pin Meltdown with three 260s plus one Physics.

there is also a common element that seems to be present, or a requirement when having this Meltdown happen....and that is having an Antec PSU.  both of my e759s that melted had an Antec 1000w True Power PSU.  after changing the PSU to a Silverstone 1500w PSU, nothing has happened thus far.

Advice for now:  until the EVGA mod comes out, I would suggest that you not overclock your cards too high if you're running TRI SLI and one Physics.

I wouldn't say so.
Antec TruePower Quattro 1200W
Intel Core i7 980X @ 6.1GHz
eVGA X58 Classified E760 #1, E760 #2 ( I have two, obviously )
3* GeForce GTX 480 @ 1200MHz / 2400MHz / GDDR5-4800 ( 1200MHz )

Running benchmarks for more than 20 hours on each board, everything went fine, and no meltdowns.

GTX 280 3-way SLI @ 1250MHz was a walk in the park as well.

benchzowner:   I'm not saying that the 24 Pin Meltdown WILL occur with the stated products; I am saying that IF it does happen, Antec seems to be involved.  this is just a guess but others who have had the experienced had the items that I had stated earlier.  not all but more than some.

I'm speaking from experience x2.  also, I think an EVGA rep stated that this is a low occuring event of less than 2%

okay, so we're coming on December....anything yet regarding the PCI Molex MOD / Adapter?  so, while I'm waiting for The Fix,  I have been running stock settings; I've have def. noticed a decline in preformance!  I am also getting a lag w/ fast-action images.  when I turn up the voltages, BAM!  I'm back in busidness w/ eye candy!  so pls EVGA, let's start cranking those bad boys out!

again, only the boards running TRI SLI w/ Physics have a chance of fire, or a PSU Meldown.  the rest of you who do not own a e759 / e760/ or the e760 watercooled edition need not worry.
