In series curent is a constant, but in paralel, it adds, the total curent of a circuit is the curent added at each point, See http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_1/chpt_5/6.html  The 24 pin plug is protected because not as much curent has to pass that point, yet the cards get the power because they draw from multaple sources,

I know i sound stupid now, but what the hell does all that mean in the link? any word on if the traces will withstand the added power or not? (via E758)

I edited the initial question to be clear.  we all know why this board burns up, okay? it was discussed in another thread; my questions were about the molex mod itself.   I was asking if anyone would / or has done the molex mod?  why or why not?  if yes, then do they have pics.?
also, again, are there any ideas /issues that we should know of from those of you e759/e760 owners who have done the molex mod that we should know of or things to look for when doing this mod?
does anyone know if there are online mod shops that can do this mod professionally?
you know, those types of questions I was trying to ask initially....

I just did the Mod on my 759 and all went well.  Can't say I see a major change in anything although the temp on my 24 pin connector runs 6-9 degrees Fahrenheit cooler during 3D Mark Vantage.  Not that it got to hot before around 106F.  I guess I just feel better now, although I never did experience  any problems. The pins looked just a good now as the first day I installed the board (1.5 yrs ago). Better to be safe then sorry. By the way I used rosin core solder and a 30watt solder iron and it had no problems sticking to pins on motherboard.

you mean from overdraw of power like if you didnt do the mod? No unless your overclocking so exteme your really stressing out the molex and the 12v pins on the 24 pins. You would have to be doing some world record breaking stuff to have that happen though.

OHH!!! yes I mean that because I thought I had to this mod just for using the two 480s without doing any kind of insane overclock! I will only use them at stock (or maybe if I oc them just a bit for bench)with an i7 920 @ 4.1, so I won't have to worry about that
Thanks for the great replies, you guys solved me a big problem because I was so nervous about this haha

To be on the safe side do the mod, i ran at stock and had my 24pin 12v's burn out with 2x GTX 480's but I have alot of accessories that need power. Its better to be safe than sorry man better to avoid the avoidable then have it slap you in the face later on. Esp since this issue is in the light now and those of us who didnt know about it got a small slap in the face or got hit in the face with an iron glove and lost a ton of stuff when it happened.

Man you guys scare me. My computer froze about 4 times recently ( when I was surfing web). I think it is new NVIDIA driver problem. Now, I read this should check my 24 pins after school.

I would be concerned about voiding my lifetime warranty on a e759 or e760. Has there been an official word about how self modding the boards affects warranties??

Although I suppose anyone will some skill in soldering could make it look stock of they needed to remove  the mod for warranty replacement... I am, unfortunately, not one of them  :(

do it just like on XS, I would use hot glue too to cover up the connectors and to help secure the molex wires to the mobo for more of a secure mounting.

I think the molex mod is for everyone using tri-sli + physics; I've had the meldown occur when running three 260s and one 9800 with a medium overclock.  so  the threat is real.  and not just for the extreme overclocker.  what seems to be a common item in all this is an antec psu.  I had an Antec 1000w psu powering my rig when my last meltdown occured

Hi all,

We would like to give you an update on the solution that we will have available shortly.

Towards the end of November, we will provide a very small “PCI-E” insert that can plug into any available PCIe slot on the motherboard. This insert is so small it can fit even below the fansink on a dual slot card.

The insert will connect to a molex connector from the power supply, and provide extra power on the PCIe lanes for extreme setups.

We will make this available free of charge for a limited time for registered customers of compatible boards, please stay tuned for more details.

Thanks,

Awesome! I am freaking speachless on this. Great job EVGA!
Thanks in advance to those that made this happened, you know who you are

Only boards that do not have dedicated PCIe power, the SR-2 already has a 6pin right above the PCIe slots designed to give more power to the slots.

It has been documented for both the E759 and E760.  The 4 way and the Sr-2 shouldn't have a problem since the 4 pin molex plug is in the board.
