Hey all... new here.  I bought my parts on 2/9 and built my PC on 2/16.

I went with EVGA because I heard good things about their warranty and CS.

Totally missed the rumored Ti release... but with 68 days to go on my Step Up option do you think I'm good?  LOL

I also paid $800 for the Rift... then they dropped it to $600 the other day and gave me a $50 store credit with an apology.  Amazon wouldn't credit me the $200 difference so I returned it and bought another at the lower price.  The $200 difference essentially pays for my step up so while the 1080 is an amazing GPU this upgrade is too good to pass up.

Nope, not at all.

The reference cards are quite awesome this generation.

Good to know.  Not sure what to do actually.  Obviously stepping up is what I want to do... but I just read in the other thread "new buyers get first dibs over step ups" and with the mad rush expected what are the odds of my remaining 68 day step up window closing before I get a chance to do it?

Option B would be just selling the 1080 of course but that would be at a loss obviously.

One thing I won't do is a buy an overpriced Ti off eBay... will just wait it out.

Remember, you can still overclock those too. I just like (Personal Preference) my cards already overclocked at the factory.      =)

It doesn't work like that as far as running out of time as long as you initiate within your time frame. I suggest you go ahead and read the Step Up page. It answers everything clearly.

One thing I won't do is a buy an overpriced Ti off eBay... will just wait it out.

Process:

Buy your 1080 (done)
Register and upload your receipt within 14 days (done?)
Wait for step up to be announced (unknown time at this point, but probably not too far away)
Go into "my products" in the member tab at the top of the forum.
Click "view details" for your 1080.
Select the card you want to step up to. More than likely 3 options available: founders, evga blower, evga acx or icx cooler.
Wait for approval to Pay and ship your card back to EVGA.

Every shipment that comes in to EVGA will have a split. Some will be designated for EVGA store sales, some newegg, some amazon, some step up, some held back for warranty (DOA cards happen, have to prepare for that.).

All you have to do is enjoy your card and enjoy games until you queue spot comes up, and you receive the email to pay for the step up. Once you are in line, you dont have to worry about the 90 day window, you just have to be in line before 90 days.

It makes more sense to step up versus taking a huge hit selling your current card.

Absolutely makes more sense to step up.  I'm good to go being I've already registered it and uploaded my invoice within the 14 days.   I'd already read the FAQ as well but didn't absorb every single bit of info and guess I just wanted to hear it from someone else more familiar with the process than myself.

Thanks for the detailed explanation and thanks to the other 2 posters for their responses and info as well.

Even these factory overclocks are now quite meaningless for nVidia cards as GPUBoost 3.0 will OC automatically til temp threshold.

I'm in the same situation.  Although I'm going to wait to see what the 1080 Ti Classified model has in store for us before I sell off my 2x 980 Ti Classified's.  Even if it means I make a little less money from the sale.

I'm not waiting 3 more months, and then crossing my fingers and hoping a block is created..the classified model is not worth that much when i can enjoy my cards for months on end, while everyone complains that they need a waterblock, or the classified isnt released fast enough.

I am hoping step up has the acx or icx versions. but I will probably still step up even if they only have the reference version. I only have 38 days on my step up but hopefully that's plenty since that would go all the way to april 10th

the base model referenxe cards have at least an ACX option.

New to PCs but I've made up my mind on the 1080Ti for my build. What's the best way to get a Evga 1080Ti when they are released? I'm seeing the 1080 Ti FE for 900$ because they sold out so quick. Any tips to get one at launch??

on the 1080 it took them awhile after release to get the acx version released, maybe since this is not the first pascal card we will see acx release close to march 10th. I'D be pretty happy if that is so

ya don't buy them for 900 i would suggest watching newegg and evgas page on march 9th-10th for the card to show up they may still sell out really quickly like the 1080. but you can allways put it on notify me when in stock after it comes out

Scarlet-Tech: You'd know a lot more about the process than I'd ever know about the workings how how EVGA releases their cards(sort of information I'm trying to figure out in this post).  I figured the Classified model would be the last, or among the last to be released in the EVGA product line, and for the most part I'm okay with that.  However, is it normally a 3 month way from the reference models to the Classified model(which would be a May to June release date)?  That might change my mind on the actual decision on if I should actually wait or not.  I really enjoyed the Classified 980 Ti immensely, almost to the point where I have a lot of loyalty to that model, however, in your opinion, do you think I could make up performance in other models, whether it be liquid cooling say a FTW model and generating similar performance?  I'm still fairly new to the scene on water cooling, and in general after market graphic cards.  So I'm trying to inform myself as best as I can based on those who have gone through this process with EVGA a few times over.  I repeat this is my first time I will be in on a initial EVGA release of their product.  I'm tempted to pre-ordered on March 10th, depending on what is offered, but I also have patience to wait, as my 980 Ti's are still holding up pretty well.  However, a 3 month wait is a bit alarming if that is what is normal protocol for EVGA to release the higher end product line cards.  I don't mind waiting for a Classified model, but if in your opinion, you honestly think it isn't worth the wait, I'd actually hold your opinion highly and re-think my choice come March 10th on the Pre-Order date, especially since I plan on water cooling my system completely.  Any advice, feedback, criticism(even if harsh) is welcomed.  I'm still very new to this process and I'm very much in a learning mode on this.  Thanks for any input and advice you give, I greatly appreciate it!

The 3 month wait would include the wait for a waterblock at minimum. Its no fun waiting and watching everyone get to fully enjoy their card while you anticipate the release of your card and the waterblock.

The good news is, you have a strong card to hold you over while you wait, so it isnt going to hurt you to wait.

If you love the classified, I say wait, but dont expect a fast release. I've done the 780, 780ti, 980, and 980ti classified or k|ngp|n model, then a 1070 FTW. you definitely spend more time waiting for the cards to be released.

Now.. i cant tell you not to get a classified.. thats not fair to you. What i can do is explain why I wont wait again.

The780ti was my first enthusiast overclocking card and i fell in love with it. There was bios modding, there was the voltage tools, there was waterblocks out pretty quick (thanks to the 780 classified) and there was a lot of headroom for overclocking with voltage. It was amazing and i fell in love with it. If ound myself running my benching computer right next to a window that was -5c, and getting my computer down to 0c for benchmarking. Yiu coild modify the bios and it was great, add lots more room for fun. Reference cards couldnt compete unless it was a golden sample.

Then the 980 kingpin came out, and voltage didnt help as much, but the temperature did. Get it freezing cold and it was awesome. Same with the 980ti classified. You could modifiy the bios and stretch its abilities. Reference cards could barely compete ever, and they had to be heavily binned to find a reference card that could outdo the custom cards.

Then Pascal happened. Cold was really the only thing that helped for stability, but you were doing everything in your power to get as close to 0c as possiblyle to gain just a few mhz more, instead of like kepler, which could go an extra 120 mhz because of voltage and temp, then maxwell that could do another 80mhz because of cold and a tiny bit of voltage, then pascal, where reference cards were doing the exact same thing on air as a classified on water.

You may hit power limits, but you cant bios mod a pascal card to overcome those like you could a 700 or 900 series card. You're stuck exactly where you were at the start. The ftw or classified may be "more stable" at 2200 mhz, but finding a card that could do that was few and far between and many reference cards showed they could so it as well.

To me, nvidia killed the fun over the enthusiast grade cards when they killed bios modding for normal people. It took Vince (K|ngp|n) almost a month to go past 2300 mhz ON LIQUID NITROGEN! Later nvidia gave them a way around the bios modding and they made it over 3000 mhz, but that took a lot of unnecessary time to complete.

So, in short, if a reference card on average can compete with a custom card, and costs $175 less, I am going to go reference from now on. That is exactly what Pascal has given us, is a custom card that can not stomp a reference card into the ground any more. Most people will buy the Classified becausr it say "extreme overclocking" in the part page.. but few will use liquid nitrogen for "extreme overclocking" meaning their card will perform the same as the other cards around it.

I still have my Ln2 pot and Dewar.. only used the pot a coiple of time, and I am actually going to sell it soon, because its just not as fun as it use to be. Its took expensive and you have to wait far too long compared to everyone else.

New to PCs but I've made up my mind on the 1080Ti for my build. What's the best way to get a Evga 1080Ti when they are released? I'm seeing the 1080 Ti FE for 900$ because they sold out so quick. Any tips to get one at launch??

ya don't buy them for 900 i would suggest watching newegg and evgas page on march 9th-10th for the card to show up they may still sell out really quickly like the 1080. but you can allways put it on notify me when in stock after it comes out

Awesome. So where would you guys suggest watching if I want to try to snag a 1080Ti? I just set myself up Newegg

Scarlet, with all due respect, I have to disagree on your reference to custom comparison.  Yes, some reference GPUs aka "Golden Chips" can compete with binned GPUs on custom PCBs but some aren't willing to risk that.  Better off going with custom for the guarantee overclock out of the box as reference isn't a guarantee that it can overclock over it's stock settings.

I'm just going to go in my corner and hope the stock OCs on the customs are fascinating.

Sadly Pascal has not been a lot of fun for overclocking.

Maybe he means the benefit of voltage and better coolers usually doesn't make a huge difference. But most all cards hit 2000 MHz which is pretty impressive in its self
