Re: 3080 ftw3 hybrid kit fans spin up to 3000 rpm 2021/01/10 14:57:47 (permalink)
I am seriously wondering if people on this forum are not capable of putting 2 and 2 together.
Has anyone even CONSIDERED the possibility that the fans revving to 3000 RPM may be related to the 6500C thermal throttling temp blip Nvidia driver bug?
Has anyone tried to map the fans spinning up to a temp sensor reading an overtemp blip >100C ?
People really need to start using their head and experimenting, instead of having me doing the thinking for them.

For all we know, the thermal temp blip bug, FTW3's dying with the random LED light of death (possibly preceded by a pop sound or smoke), and fans revving to max could all be related to the same thing.  The only thing we know 100% for certain is that the 6500C/Thermal throttle blip is an Nvidia driver bug, since Non evga cards (like the FE) also get this exact same blip.  Except the fans don't seem to spin up when it happens.

Now yes it could be two different issues here or even *THREE* different issues that are totally unrelated (Nvidia driver temp bugs, PX1 bugs, eVGA onboard hardware destroy the power delivery bugs), we don't know.  But the sooner someone takes the time to use what is available to find out, the sooner it gets fixed and the better it is for everyone.

Get mad at me all you want, guys, but unless you guys come together and help eVGA track down the problem, your cards are going to continue to die or you're going to continue to have fan issues.

Or I just plug the fans into my mobo and map my GPU temp to the mobo fans and I have not had an issue since.

Also the fans revving up is not a load issue since I can reproduce it every time at the Overwatch login screen. Once I'm logged in the fans settle down and spin normally. When the fans are going crazy and spinning up at the login screen, I alt-tabbed out to see what was going on in the system, temps, load etc. Everything looks normal... except for the fans going crazy.

I'm inclined to believe it's a firmware issue since it happens even when there's no PX1 or MSI Afterburner installed on my system.

Having same problem. Installed the hybrid kit on my 3080 ftw3 ultra and I get random fan ramping up under load after installing hybrid bios. Fans will ramp up to 13000 rpm for 1-2 seconds then back down. Makes no difference if the switch is on Normal or OC. PX1, Afterburner and Speedfan fan curves make no difference either.

What software did you use to map to GPU temp? I think I want to do that.

Support could not help me, only offered a replacement, which is useless. Get refund while you can.

Really don't know why this topic has not been moved to go under EVGA Coolers. Luckily I found it here. I have received my Hybrid conversion and am about to install it.....like today. This thread is making me have second thoughts. Is anyone having a successful experience or should I not even open the box? Please reply quickly.

Yeahh.. I also just installed mine and I have the same problem, this never happened with my air cooled 3080 ftw3 ultra until I converted it with the hybrid kit. Random spikes and fan ramping up in high load games or even benchmarks. Lower demanding games doesn't seem to affect it though. It's definitely software or firmware/bios issue. Picture Below - 20,000,000 RPM.

Here is the BIOS updates to turn the card into a HYBRID. Each .zip includes 2 files. One for Normal BIOS and one for OC BIOS. Only install this update if the HYBRID kit is installed.

3080 FTW3 HYBRID Kit BIOS = https://www.evga.com/EVGA/GeneralDownloading.aspx?file=3080_FTW3_HYBRID.zip
3090 FTW3 HYBRID Kit BIOS = https://www.evga.com/EVGA/GeneralDownloading.aspx?file=3090_FTW3_HYBRID.zip

I ordered a hybrid kit for my 3080 XC3 Ultra, is there a Hybrid Kit BIOS download for the XC3 cards? Thanks.

Yeah! I want to know if theres going to be a fix for this, this never happened to my air cooled. Only started happening after i converted to hybrid and flashed hybrid bios and hybrid XOC bios.

Same. Has the problem been acknowledged yet? The post above referencing the 6500C temp spikes suggests it could be driver related. Maybe EVGA is hoping the issue will be fixed by a new driver. I was hoping the recent firmware update would help, but sadly not.

That temp blip is apparently something to do with HWINFO or software being crossed, but also could be driver related but I saw this post a while ago, and the guys are HWINFO said that temp blip could be fixed in the next release. https://www.hwinfo.com/forum/threads/temperature-3080-ft3-ultra.6948

Yeah the firmware didn't help at all.

HWInfo wouldn't make my fan RPMs spike intermittently.
I've opened a support ticket with EVGA and was told to send it in for RMA as it could be a sign of GPU exhibiting signs of impending failure.
Will send it in, wish me luck.

Any solutions for this issue yet. Seems to only be happening for Hybrid, I'm pretty sure its the firmware for Precision x1.

It’s definitely a software/firmware/driver related issue. If it was hardware related we would have seen these issues prior to installing the hybrid kits. Most of us haven’t had any issues until the kit was installed and the bios was flashed. I really wish someone at EVGA would speak up rather than have us all running in different directions. It seems counterintuitive to have us RMA cards that are probably perfectly fine.

100% agree, just hoping they know about this and will be releasing a fix in the next one.

Yes you're right, but point is we shouldn't have to as that behaviour isn't normal and still needs a fix.

I think some people just haven't noticed or are using mobo to control the rad fans.

I have loaded this on my recently converted hybrid 3090 FTW3 ULTRA.

Original fan speeds were 33% idle.  With the HYBRID firmware it is 40%, a little louder.  My fans and LEDs appear to be reporting correctly.

My timespy score went from 18136 to 18837.  Previous best with OC on stock and XOC firmware was 18560.  Power level is 450w on the money!  Same clock speed and power settings as before.  I couldn't break 420 and would average 400 peak with stock OC firmware and XOC.

So far I like it, minus the extra fan noise.

Hi all. I just installed the hybrid kit on my FTW3 Ultra 3080 this past weekend and also have my fans spin up to 3000 at random times. I’ve flashed the normal and OC bios for the hybrid, but not the XOC bios. Before I installed the kit I never had any issue with fans on my card.

Posting because I was googling for the issue and found this thread and want to add my voice to requesting a fix.

Edit: Wanted to elaborate a bit more. My idle temperatures are low 20s with the normal OC fan curve. I only notice this behavior under a gaming or benching load. Temperatures are usually around 50-54C, so nothing outrageous that would necessitate the fans to spin up that much. It’s got to be load related because I can alt+tab away from a game, or enter a menu and then when I resume play 90% of the time I’ll hear the fans spin up again.

I appreciate the cooler temperatures but noise levels are almost the same as the regular air cooler.

Same thing with my 3090 Hybrid kit. I'll be gaming at 50-65C temp and jump to 100% fan speed for 1-2 seconds every 5 minutes or so under load.

3090 FTW3 Ultra to 3090 Hybrid bios installed.

My card is currently with EVGA Taiwan for RMA :)
I'll let you all know once I get the replacement, hopefully soon.

And EVGA only update my card's firmware.

They say they will release new firmware soon.

It finally fixed.Nice job.

Excellent news, thanks for sharing. I feel like there should have been a “we’re aware of this and working on a fix” post a while ago though... It would have helped EVGA avoid much of the irritation on this thread.
