Ford I6 and 289, are my fav Ford engines. I even though it's not stock, have you thought about rebuilding the I6 for forged internals and boosting/turbo it? Those I6's are just about bullet proof... Edit, in my opinion, turbos with said I6, just going to a nicer setup if your not going to the drag strip every weekend, getting a higher stall turbo, would be better if your just cruising.

the i6 was 1968 motor that was in the car when I got it was running then it stopped so I opened it up after removal from car vlave seat bad pistons beat to heck bu spark plug and crank was lose a little play so I just using my 289 I had already rebuilt to go back in. as for turbo I may do the v8 289 same as a 302 duh but just for daily driving it can wait a little longer

289 can be a a very sweet V8-turbo, if you do it right.

Knight, something I think I should say on this, if you go that route only use a 200 or 250, do not try and boost the 170's or 144's. 144s and 170s have 4 main bearings and 200/250s have 7, the smaller end wont put up with it very well. Otherwise aside form turbo etc I would agree, they are nearly indestructible. But since OP isn't using it anyway, it is a moot point here, but it was info incase you wanted to do it, and I would hate ot see money spent on something that might fail in short order. :)

I was remembering wrong, I thought all the I6's were 4bolt mains? Can you even get forged rods, pistons for the I6's? For a daily driver, going with a high stall turbo, where you don't start to hit boost pressure till 3K rpms, exhaust type turbo, say 5lbs on boost.

I could see a Carb, working with an exhaust turbo, but only on 5lbs or less. Never been a fan on belt turbos, might as well super charge a 289.

In general you don't want to use a vacuum carb with forced air, manual is perfectly fine. May be ways around that, but I have seen that go VERY badly in the past. evilmustang66 ok back at it tried to get the engine and tranny married but the pilot bearing said no it was wrong go figure idiots at autozone sold me the wrong one got the correct one coming in a week along with the head pipes which connect the exhaust manifolds to the exhaust also buying a slightly used oem hood to replace my old on the car
Bummer about the bearing, but in the end that is minor. Hoping to see some more pics as you go with this, old stangs are such an open canvas to just about anything you want to do.

To Dave, "manual carb, as in manual choke?" How well would this work with a belt super charger with a 289?

No headers on this one? That's a nice exhaust kit, but doesn't this family of engines need all the help they can get on the exhaust side? Now would be the best time to install them, before you have to fight the engine for admission. Of course it will work with the factory manifolds, but this would be a nice upgrade for performance.

no headers not even trying to adapt for clearance with headers yet zbar issues on some headers besides the head pipes allow for it to breathe with the stock exhaust maniflods
