Did you rebuild the complete engine? Is the cam/lifters new? If so, most manufacturers recommend keeping the engine @ 2000 RPM for proper lobe seating. This should be done from the moment engine starts, if I remember it should do so for 20 minutes. If not done properly it can cause premature wear on lobes and lifters.  If you have a cam card look at it. Is the ticking from your valve train or exhaust? If it's a solid lifter cam then disregard my asking about ticking. Anyway, I'm sure your happy to make the progress you have. Needs more CowBell!

post #47 I believe receipt on motor complete rebuild is yes, it has  hydrualic lifters remember motor been down almost 5 to 6 months no run since pulled it only has 200 miles on the break in since rebuild , I will have the machine shop check for possible adjustment of the lash but that is considered normal for that 289 ford motor as for exhaust remember I still need to buy the rest of the kit the head pipes stop and transmission crossmember

Did you pre-lube the engine before starting it? I'm not trying to pooh on your build, I'm just asking to save you problems. [despite my user name:)] I know those engines don't have an adjustable valve train, unless you go custom.

yes I primed the motor with no fire removed coil wire, as in just turned it over first  but here a video of a 289 with valve  like mine https://youtu.be/8nFKom6SMd4  no I do not do like the video on the left is just for reference, summit has good info on the valve adjustment https://youtu.be/8ROU7D-6meY but I will have the speed shop who did my motor look into it it under warranty through them on the rebuild

From what I remember, you don't adjust the valves on a Ford 289 like you would on a Chevy small block. You just torque them all down until they stop at the shoulder on the stud. Check with your local Ford dealership to be certain unless you have installed a solid lifter camshaft.

That was an informative vid, however it doesn't apply to you. On your particular engine, it's just a matter of torqueing the rocker nuts down to w/e the torque is listed. IE: non adjustable. Maybe there is some air in the lifters, that should work out over time. I like to soak new lifters in a pan of oil overnight, I would also fill the oil filter with oil before installing. You should install a nice set of gauges so you can keep tabs on everything.

I'm confused when you say 200 miles on break in. Has the engine been used before, or how has it been broken in?
All the parts on your list are quality parts, melling oil pump, ect. Is that your receipt or you bought it from someone for $650? Hope it's the latter, for $2500 you could have a pretty hot engine....anyway. It's definitely coming along very nicely, you have done quite a nice job so far. :)

Edit: that's exactly right Zuhl. Unless you go adjustable push rods ,ect. SBF don't have an adjustment.

yes the motor was pulled when I removed it after my other 65 v8 car frame rail was so bad it would cost more to work on that car than a v8 swap .
the motor was completely rebuilt by the pros as a full block.
when I got it back it had break in oil I had to drive it 200 miles to break it in on my 65 green car and to be sure of no leaks with the professional at the speed shop.
yes they know what to do they race regularly on sunday.

10w30 lucas classic car oil with zinc only for this motor

great books I found that are hard to find for my car a lot of info and specs also the repro places sell a disc covering the car specs motor and all but I have faith in old timers that did the work on the 289 as the guys there knew how much this means to me also how rare it is to have a working 289 from 1965 period

Notice that the chapter of that book says "V8s with Mechanical Lifters". You should have Hydraulic lifters unless you asked for Solid Lifters specifically.

You don't have mechanical lifters, should be hydraulic. Yours is a 2V engine ,correct and not the K "code" engine?

my car engine is the c code with hydro lifters
I have faith in the people at this place know what they are doing http://bullfrogperformance.net/index.html they have been very helpful even as far as coming to my house and putting the pertronix kit with my disturb in when I brought that engine home. old timers who know the engine well i don't use people who think like autozone wrong pilot bearing(sold me one for 6cly) lol wrong starter(auto vs manual) lol
they are hydraulic lifters that what came out when the original un touched motor had before it was rebuilt
ford made the 289 with both mech and hydro lifters .
ford was known for shortages of parts and use what they had on the assem line that why the 67 to 68 cars had a early 302 with 289 block

the car I got this motor from was a c code car period I also had a 66 289(bought from a neighbor that thought it was 5.0 lol my gain his loss) that I sold that had hydraulic lifters and was a k code engine and was correct had a mustang of America club president  verify it before he bought it. the 66 289 before I junked it, I had that was bored 60 over had hydro lifters in it too.

So far it looks like it's going to be an awesome ride. I love classic cars myself. I just found out a friend of mine has a '63 Chevy Impala in original condition sitting in his garage that he'd be interested in selling. I'm already starting to drool thinking about it.

then have front end rechecked for alignment work just to be safe.

had to install a replacement fuse box the old glass setup rusted out so I bought a aftermarket one with two inline fuses too.

ok do not try this unless you know your wiring on the car or have the racing knowledge and know how to wire from beginning.
ford has 3 wires that have power to it fuse box
1. the hot wire to cig lighter
2. the instrument light fuse wires
3. the accessories wire
first two got a inline fuse with proper fuse size
the third got the new ato fuse box
working better than I imagine but I will be ordering the painless 22 circuit part#20120 for my car to rewire the entire car period.
nothing like a 12 volt battery to wake you up in morning

ok so I ran into a issue with the exhaust kit had to rma this bad boy to magnaflow lifetime warranty it didn't line up like it should have so the tech had me measure the parts so the x pipe was off supposed to be 10.6 inches but was 13 inches wide from center, and the tail pipes were off supposed to 36 inches were 30 and 32 inches so I back on hold good news is radio installed can even get my phone calls with blu tooth

I just had a great idea for you paint job.
Since your car is white, put a NY Yankee logo on the hood and doors then do blue pinstripes all around.
Now that would look great!!!

okay car is on ground was road tested for shifting issues had some minor adjustments that I did to fix the shifter linkage, so now it will be off to the the mechanic to have the alignment rechecked with steering wheel and also toe in and out checked.

then it driving fun while I save for body and paint
I will post video of engine with new exhaust soon along with driving video too
